Newt Scamander is a magizoologist and writer of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which is part of required reading at Hogwarts. Newt was sorted into hufflepuff and his scarf is a nod to that. As you noted, he didn’t speak too much and avoided eye-contact. He is very much a socially awkward character who is more comfortable around magical creatures than other people. I like that he is different from your average protagonist that way. Also, as others have pointed out, Bellatrix Lestrange is a Lestrange by marriage, so she is not related to Leta Lestrange. Bellatrix was a daughter of house Black; her sisters were Andromeda (Nymphadora Tonks’s mother) and Narcissa (Draco Malfoy’s mother). She was also cousins with Sirius and Regulus Black.

Dumbledore and Grindlewald were best friends and hunted the elder wand and other deathly hallows together. Grindlewald wanted to dominate muggles though and him and Dumbledore had a falling out and eventually the most legendary duel in the wizarding world in which Dumbledore wins the elder wand from Grindlewald. That's how Dumbledore gets it for the Harry Potter series.

Newt Scamander, I would be shocked if they didn't tell him to act with certain Aspergers traits, though Redmayne says he worked with naturalists (is that the right word? The Jane Goodall type?) to get the mannerisms down. The not talking so much, the no eye contact, the blunt manner of speaking these are all elements of both Aspergers people and to an extent people who work with animals. But I do think the movie succeeds at one thing with his character. Newt Scamander is essentially the voice of compassion and reason compared to everyone else. Like you said, everyone was casting spells at Credence and Newt Scamander approached him like a frightened animal, quiet, low to the ground, slow. He wants to protect these creatures when the first thing Tina said about his book was asking if it was an extermination guide. Much of Eddie Redmayne's acting in this movie is physical acting as opposed to speaking. We don't know much about his history but we know what he is like. He's a Hufflepuff through and through. Also, the Americans have stricter rules about Muggles because of the history of the Salem Witch Trials. You even see that when the president said "When NoMajs are afraid, they attack." BUT interestingly enough the American wizards have more acceptance of non human magical creatures. You see house elves holding wands, which is against the law in England (as per Goblet of Fire). And you see a house elf working at a bar and with the kind of attitude that would be unacceptable in Britain. Essentially, America's history shaped how America is different from England when it comes to these matters. I also love the sign of the deathly hallows on the necklace. They don't focus on it, but anybody who has read the books knows that Grindlewald used it as his personal symbol during his rise to power. People actually remembered it more as his sign than the sign of the Deathly Hallows, to the point that Krum was willing to duel Luna Lovegood's father when he saw him wearing it. Essentially it was a revealing plot point that only someone who was paying attention and had understood the reference would pick up on. Last point, I promise. Rowling did write the script for this, and I definitely think it's a great idea. Her writing shows in this, with clues and buildup that are presented as minor things that turn out to be important. She tells a lot with very little detail. Not to mention her matter of fact dialogue. In the Harry Potter books, Rowling would mention these crazy things in passing, and it added to the world building, that these insane statements were completely normal. Ex. "This is a great remedy for acne, now kids won't have to curse their's off." "Oh like Eloise?" "Yes, yes poor girl. But Madam Pomfrey managed to reattach her nose in no time." Ex. "Tensions between the Slytherin and Gryffindor teams had hit an all time high. Marcus Flint had shown up again and couldn't speak, and Angelina Johnson was sprouting a handsome pair of antlers in the hospital wing." You get the idea

Ariana Dumbledore (Albus's sister), she's believed to have been an obscurial. When she was 6 she was seen by a group of muggle kids doing magic and they attacked her because she wasn't able to perform her magic in front of them as they wanted. This destroyed her and she began to hide or suppress her magic. She became unstable and had these wild episodes just like Credence in Fantastic Beasts. The father of the Dumbledore family (Percival) attacked these kids as revenge and he got a life sentence in Azkaban after this, he didn't say anything about her daughter to protect her because if the Ministry knew about Ariana status they would have sent her away thinking she was a risk for the statute of secrecy in the wizarding world. People knew the Dumbledores had a daughter but the family kept her condition a secret so the rest of the world thought she was probably a squib (child of wizards with no magic). Kendra (the mother of the family) died when at 14 Ariana had an episode and things went out of control. Albus and Grindelwald became very close, Grindelwald wanted to dominate the muggles and had the idea of Ariana being free in that world he would create. Aberforth didn't want Ariana anything to do with those plans. This whole thing ended with a duel between Albus and Grindelwald and the Fantastic Beasts franchise is supposed to have 5 movies, being the last one the one where we get to see this epic fight, here Albus won the Elder Wand. I hope we can see something really epic because in the wizarding world this is major, this is why many people consider Albus Dumbledore as the greatest wizard of all time.

Lestrange is Belatrix's husband's last name, her own was Black. Bellatrix, Narcissa Malfoy and Andromeda Tonks are all from the Black family. Their mother's last name was Rosier (btw Grindewald's loyal follower Vinda Rosier is in the fantastic beasts movies and she's probably related to the Black sisters. Leta was not).

Well if you read the books again you'll find, that "Fantastic beasts.." is a school book that is used in Hogwarts. Harry had to buy it in Diagon Alley. Although a book with that name exists. There is a package with three IT books available. Including: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Quidditch Through the Ages and The Tales of Beedle the Bard. All are worth reading.

Information about Grindlewald: At the age of 16, he was expelled from the Durmstrang Institute, a wizarding school on the north-east of mainland Europe, for deep black and magical activities and then moved to Godric's Hollow to his great aunt Bathilda Bagshot. A two-month, very close friendship developed between him and Albus Dumbledore, who was almost two years older and lived in Prof. Bagshot's immediate neighborhood. At that time Grindelwald's overpowering wand fell to his victorious opponent. Grindlewald only had the elder wand. During the famous duel between himself and Dumbledore, Dumbledore won the elder wand from him. The resurrection stone was in the Gaunt family (Voldemorts mother family) for generations enclosed in the Gaunt ring. Voldemort eventually uses the ring as a horcrux in which Dumbledore wore and cursed his hand. Voldemort was unaware of the stone being the resurrection stone, he chose the ring as a horcrux simply due to the connection with his family. The cloak somehow made its way into the hands of the Potters.

Some important things for you guys to understand! This movie is not based on any book, J.K. Rowling wrote the book "Fantastic Beasts and where to find them" but it's actually a textbook with no story, just descriptions of the various beasts newt has encountered in his adventures, and she published it in 2001, yes, long, long ago. For this movie J.K. Rowling wrote the entire screenplay with an actual story. There are five movies planned that are going to tell the story of the great war between Grindelwald and Dumbledore, and how Newt and Credence became important to this conflict. The first one is set in 1926, and the last one will be set in 1945, the year Dumbledore and Grindelwald finally had their final duel and Dumbledore gained possession of the Elder Wand. This is not a spoiler, it's just long established lore that was revealed in the Deathly Hallows book back in 2007. The circumstances of this duel, and everything that led up to it however are unknown, that's the story j.k. Rowling is telling in these movies.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. A textbook that later Harry Potter and classmates would later read at Hogwarts. J.K. Rowling wrote a real copy of it. Even after writing that book she still felt there was something more there to explore for the character of Newt Scamander. (Fun fact; rewatch the scene in the 3rd Harry Potter(prisoner of Azkaban) where Fred and George first give Harry the Marauders Map and you will see a set of footprints on it labeled with Newt Scamander’s name.). I can tell you all about Newt’s backstory but this comment is already long enough haha. Harry Potter takes place in the 90s where as Fantastic Beasts takes place in 1926 (coincidentally the same year Tom Riddle was born). You could look at it as a prequel to Harry Potter but it is meant to be a separate story. Hogwarts is in Scotland, that’s why the Hogwarts Express takes a day to get there from London. Illvermorny school is a top Mount Greylock which I believe is in New Hampshire. The little critter stealing all the shiny things wasn’t trained to steal things no. It is a Niffler and they love shiny objects. In Harry’s area of the wizarding world yes there was the racism against muggles and muggleborn wizards/witches but in that community you were still allowed to marry them and interact with them. But in America’s Wizarding World it’s much more strict. It is not racism based like what you think. They had quite a lot of mishaps happen in their lands where muggles started uprisings, witch hunts and all kinds of trouble so with their laws they just eliminated any chance of anything happening. So really their strict rules are based off of fear more than racism. Can’t marry them, interact with them. Heck even the Illvermorny students have to leave their wands at school during their vacations until they come of age. But they do allow in muggleborns, they register every witch and wizard born on their lands. MACUSA is like an American Ministry of Magic. It is not possible to make a muggle into a wizard. You have Muggles, Muggleborns, Half-Bloods, Pure-Bloods, Obscurials and Squibs. That’s it. The Rhino/ Whale looking creature is an Erumpent. Coincidentally in Deathly Hallows Part 1 there was a horn that used to belong to an Erumpent on a shelf in Xenophilius Lovegood’s home. That’s what ended up blowing up his home in the death eater attack. It was after all as Hermione put it “Class B Tradable Material. Highly explosive.” The invisible creature; the Demiguise. The one that looked like an ape. Poachers often use their hair to knit invisibility cloaks. Obviously not to the caliber of Harry’s cloak of course lol. The Obscurus in Newt’s case is out of play now. It was confiscated by MACUSA when they were interrogated. Albus Dumbledore around this time I believe is in his 40s. That moment on the roof shared between Jacob and Queenie; she was trying to protect him but then she saw all the awful things he endured during his time serving in World War 1. Another fun fact. Wandless Magic is more prevalent in wizarding America versus other nations because their rules on wands are so strict. Wandless Magic takes a great deal of practice and can be quite unstable. But it is possible to be accomplished. All wands ever were; were a way for witches and wizards to control their magic easier. Grindelwald never obtained all 3 of the Deathly Hallows. He only became the Master of the Elder wand.(check the comment I left on your reaction to deathly hallows part 2 and you’ll understand why Harry Potter was the only one ever to have truly owned all 3) Grindelwald sought the 3 Hallows with Dumbledore yes but he didn’t really care about the other two. He just wanted power. Power that could only come to him through the Elderwand. The same goes for him wanting to use Credence for his power. Again Grindelwald was the great dark wizard before Voldemort. Voldemort’s terror was mainly within the UK whereas Grindelwald’s influence expanded more so worldwide. Not even mentioning the fact that apart from Voldemort he actually did have the true power of the Elderwand. Credence is not a villain. He was brought up in a very tortured and abusive house hold. Ultimately leading up to him suppressing his magic. It is in a way a metaphor for members of the LGBT community. How trying so hard; suppressing their true nature can manifest in violent explosions of anger or emotion. Im so glad to see you guys jumping right into these. The rest of us had to wait a long time not knowing if we’d ever get to see the Wizarding World again on film. Then we got this lovely suprise of a franchise. J. K. Rowling in an interview has provided us with information that after careful study of where they are taking the storyline; it is looking like the Fantastic Beasts franchise will span across 5 films in total when originally they had a (placeholder) set on it thinking it was going to be a trilogy. I'm another one of the commenters to say pay attention to the subtleties of Newt. Hollywood has us conditioned for a certain type of protagonist and Newt is not one of them. He is kind, shy, yet confident is who he is and what he does(accept maybe with women :D). He also always tries to do the right thing even if it may not be popular, like save Credence. If you look closely you will see he is a perfect embodiment of Hufflepuff. Totally not bias or anything as I'm a Hufflepuff myself and a big fan Eddie Redmayne.

Hogwarts is actually in Scotland which is part of the UK. The United Kingdom of Great Britain has four countries that are part of it, England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. All of those countries are part of Britain. And the Harry Potter series takes place in nearly all of them. Not just England. Hogwarts is of course for all magical students of Great Britain AND it even accepts students from the rest of Ireland thats not part of the UK at all. And when it comes to Bellatrix, she was actually born into the Black family, remember she was Sirius's cousin. She only married into the Lestrange family. So Lestrange was her married name.

David Yates did Harry Potters 5-8 and both Fantastic Beasts. J.K. Rowling wrote all the Harry Potter books, wrote an index covering several fantastic beasts under the pseudo name Newt Scamander (later editions have been published with more beasts than the original), and wrote the screenplay for both Fantastic Beasts movies and the upcoming one. Dumbledore owned the elder wand, but where did he get it from? Remember in Deathly Hallows part 1 when Voldemort was searching for the wand? There was that flashback where a boy stole the wand from the wand maker, Gregoravitch. That boy was Gellert Grindelwald, confirmed by Hermione as she read from The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore, written by Rita Skeeter. The movies didn’t make it completely clear, but more information comes out in the second Fantastic Beasts movie about Dumbledore’s and Grindelwald’s relationship. However, it’s not a spoiler in the extended edition of Philosopher’s Stone, it is stated by Ron as he reads from Dumbledore’s card from the chocolate frog that Dumbledore is famous for his defeat of the dark wizard Grindelwald in 1945...Rowling has been planting seeds about this story from the beginning too. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them is one of Harry’s required school textbooks as well.

Dumbledore and Grindlewald were best friends (its suggested in Deathly Hallows that Dumbledore was in love with him). When they were young they both had the same ideas regarding power and hunted for the Deathly Hallows together. Eventually Grindlewald's ideology moved too far for Dumbledore's taste, and they had a big falling out. They had a duel - and Dumbledore's sister was killed in the collateral damage by a misfired spell when she tried to help. She was a teenager, and couldn't control her magic - it's also been suggested (this is not a spoiler, I checked; this is all in the Deathly Hallows Books) that she may have also been an obscurus. This is because she was scared of magic - as when she was 6 three muggle boys saw her using it and attacked her. That was why Dumbledore's father was sent to Azkaban, mentioned in Deathly Hallows, because he killed the muggles who attacked his daughter. The sister was never right afterwards, and so she never went to school - is was supposed to be Dumbledore's responsibility to look after her when his mother died. This is why Aberforth (Dumbledore's brother) didn't like him; as he's always blamed Dumbledore for Ariana's death. Grindlewald is the dark wizard who came before Voldemort. He had the Elder Wand before Dumbledore did. Dumbledore and Harry are the only two who have ever possessed all three Hallows at the same time. This is set in the 1920s. Harry Potter is set in the 1990s - so Voldemort grows up during the 1940s I believe. Hope that over the top answer answers your question haha! Great video! Love all of your Harry Potter entries! Hey guys. Nice video. If you take a look at the Potter series, you will find out that Tina (short for Porpetina) marries Newt, who writes a textbook about fantastic beasts. Dumbledore wins the elder wand in a famous duel with Grindelwald. It is as a result of this duel that Dumbledore becomes the greatest wizard in the world. Grindelwald is killed decades later at Askeban prison by Voldemort, who wished to obtain the elder wand.

There’s a British tv show that is fairly similar to Doctor Who, it’s called Merlin (a BBC Show) and it’s excellent and I think you’d love it. It is about Merlin and Camelot with King Arthur and centres around magic. It ended a few years ago with 5 seasons.

I love how this shows the adult life of witchcraft and wizardry. People don't use magic words, use spells of bigger scale etc. Feels epic to see the stories of people who were the legends you just heard of in main HP series. Also yes. Dumbledore and Grindelwald in their prime were the two most powerful wizards who ever lived. Harry and Voldemort were powerful sure and the most powerful of their time but not as powerful as D and G but really really important because of the profecies and what they did with their power.

Gellert Grindelwald was the second most powerful dark wizard in history (second only to Lord Voldemort). Grindelwald and Dumbledore were childhood friends, until a falling out between Dumbledore, Aberforth and Grindelwald caused a 3 way duel to break out and Ariana (Dumbledore’s sister) was accidentally killed. Grindelwald fled for his life in terror from Dumbledore after Ariana died and never went back to Britain. He became a dark wizard and lead a terrorist campaign across the world, which Dumbledore turned a blind eye to out of fear of Grindelwald telling him that he had been the one to kill Ariana. Eventually, Dumbledore hunted down and defeated Grindelwald, and took the elder wand from him. Grindelwald was thrown in prison for the rest of his life, until Lord Voldemort found him during his hunt for the Elder Wand and murdered him when Grindelwald refused to give up the wand’s location.

Mr. Scamander is an ordinary person with an extraordinary destiny. Unlike Harry Potter who was "The Chosen One" right after he was born. But I understand that you want Newt's backstory for exposition purposes. Additionally, the book "Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them" is literally an Encyclopedia of... fantastic beasts of the HP universe whereas the Harry Potter Series is a goldmine of information for storytelling.

The premier American magic school is called Ilvermorney and was founded by a descendent of Salazar Slitheren and her MUGGLE husband (there was no segregation in those days). Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald and became the master of the Elder Wand. The cloak was a Potter family heirloom. The ring was a Gaunt family heirloom (Riddle/Voldemont). Harry was the first to have all three. There is no book this was based on only the fictional Hogwarts textbook.
