A bit of trivia: This was originally supposed to be a start of a horror franchise, more in line with the comic book (all the slapstic aside, an ordinary person won't survive being force-fed a car muffler - the mask is an insane artifact of evil that invariably turns its bearers into monsters. ) It was only during production that they decided to go for pure comedy.

Comedic or horror, I can see Loki, Jotunn-born honorary Aesir, shapeshifting Norse God of Mischief and Chaos, father of the Jormungandr, the Fenris Wolf, Hel, Sleipnir, Vali and Narvi, laughing his head off at everything that happened because of his mask, no matter how many people get hurt.

When this was released, the famous saying of the SFX team was (paraphrasing): "It was so incredible, working with Jim. We went in expecting to do WAY more animation for the cartoon-feel, but it just turnd out he was a big fan of cartoons, and such an energetic guy, that he could just pull it off without us. That way we could focus ourselves much more on the other stuff."

I was 8 when this movie came out, my older brother was obsessed with it (after watching it, he began a journey of bad hairstyle and veeery bad clothing choices, think of the love child of the mask and Parker Lewis, still gives the whole family chuckles when mentioned). If you like the amazingly silly Jim Carrey, you should go for 'Ace Ventura'!

Currently we've got Jonas Strand Gravli on the Norwegian Netflix show Ragnarok - it's been all but confirmed that Laurits Seier is Loki reincarnated, just don't know if he knows. I wonder who'll play Loki when they finally make a tv show or movie series of 'Magnus Chase'?

We don't EVER talk about the second Mask movie. It is UNIVERSALLY HATED. It is one of the worst movies ever made. Nobody acknowledges it. As for The Mask character he was toned down he is R rated in the comics, he is essentially unkillable. He has Toon Force as his powers which means he is a cartoon character. He can basically create any reality as long as he finds it funny. Similar to Roger Rabbit. The Mask beat Deadpool in a death battle. The Mask is the definition of OP. He can't really lose in any way whatsoever when the mask is on. He is reality, he bends it to his humor.

If you want another Jim Carrey movie to watch, why not Ace Ventura: Pet Detective or Liar Liar? Me, Myself & Irene is also a really funny one. I really liked that vape joke, by the way.

Really good film. I've seen it since I was a kid. Used to scare the bejesus out of me😂😂. Now it doesn't. This has so many quotes that I know off by heart. I heard The Mask is gonna make a cameo in the new Space Jam movie and Jim Carrey is ready to reprise his role as long as the script is right. Avoid Son of The Mask. I am begging u. Dude, Son Of the mask is a spin-off where it takes place immediately after where it focuses on the mask being washed ashore and another dog finds it, and gives it to his owner, but none of the cast return, its a stands by itself sequel I personally love (its fantasticer than the first and wackier and has mass action but its not dark), you both need to check it out...!
