Actually, it _was_ confirmed that Don Ohlmeyer fired Norm MacDonald because of the OJ jokes; Ohlmeyer said it himself in the SNL Backstage special a few years ago.
@raghailligh10802 ай бұрын
Sadly, the world lost Norm in 2021, but he lives on as a widely respected voice in comedy, as evidenced by many beloved videos online. He also outlived by several years the unmourned scumbag corporate hack Ohlmeyer, who will only be remembered as a gutless twerp who steadfastly supported a man who savagely stabbed his wife to death.
@willlastnameguy83292 ай бұрын
It came out later that it was actually a writer who was fired for the jokes, and Norm quit out of solidarity but didn't want the writer to face any backlash from fans. So he kept it secret from everyone. The writer, Jim Downey, was told this years later by Snl executives and revealed it after Norm died.

I was always under the impression that sinead tore up the popes picture because he supported the brittish occupation of northern ireland. Most people here seem to think it was about abuse by priests. Did she say it was about that at some point? Because the song she was singing would suggest it was about the irish "troubles." I feel like people think it was about child abuse because that is what the church is most associated with these days. But that wasn't common knowledge when she made this appearance.

I haven't seen any of these (I watched somewhat regularly in the early 90s, then pretty much nothing since except the occasional viral sketch). Gotta say, the Kenan-as-abused-Tiger sketch, really feels like a public service announcement, that it shouldn't have gotten backlash. It IS undeniable fact that domestic abuse of men is generally dismissed as not happening or not serious, people often don't take it seriously. If you think of it, there are abused women shelters and resources, but it seems like there's little to nothing for men. Christopher Titus had a sitcom Titus which had an episode that is burned in my memory, the character Titus finds out an ex has died, it becomes his mission to go to the funeral. His girlfriend takes this as meaning he was still hung up on her, was devastated by her passing, but it turns out that no, she would beat the hell out of him, then use nudity and sex to get him to forgive her and keep the relationship going. He had major trauma about the whole thing, he needed to go to the funeral to confirm she was actually dead, he could finally feel safe from her abuse, etc. I really appreciated them tackling this concept, showing that it's possible for men to be abused too (I found the nudity/sex angle to be an excellent feasible explanation for how a woman might keep such a relationship going). To be clear, I haven't been abused myself, I just have heightened empathy and have always been aware that domestic abuse isn't only women, but the support system is. I'm a great believer in equality.
