@@shaliseshaw9385 The Catholic Church was responsible for covering up literally thousands of cases of child sexual abuse. When a predatory priest was found, standard policy was to intimidate the victim to stay silent, while quietly sending the offender to another parish (where it would start all over again). The Church made Jeffrey Epstein look like an amateur. If any organization BUT the Church acted like that, the person in charge would have been arrested. But since it was the Church, people kept looking the other way and quickly "forgetting" any scandals that went public. I commend Sinead for looking at that situation and saying, "This is wrong, and someone needs to speak up".

Rage Against the Machine and System of a Down literally conform. Most of these corporate bands are subject to conformist demands. And they almost always bend the knee.
@pastense
@pastense 2 жыл бұрын
@@raygartargaryen5927 the way the music industry is designed, no band or artist could ever rise to prominence without some sort of conformity. Or else they would forever stay underground. But bands like these, of course, have their limits and navigate the industry while striving to keep their original intentions of expression as much as they can. A good (or bad) example on the hip hop side of things are the Black Eyed Peas. Nobody recognizes that their first two albums were 100% PURE hip hop, until they picked up Fergie and turned pop overnight. Ultimately, without any sort of “selling out” we wouldn’t know about these great bands and artists. Sad, but true. But that’s the beauty of the independent route that artists today are able to utilize these days. Quality music is still out there. The difference is that back then, there was quality music in the mainstream, where as today quality music is diminishing on the mainstream and you have to actually look and know where to find new quality music and artists.

You have to wonder what Lorne was thinking having a presidential candidate host the same night RATM was musical guest. Pretty much a recipe for disaster. He left the show (along with the rest of the original cast) in 1980, but returned in the fall of 1985 at the insistence of the network.

Actually, a pretty interesting list. I do remember watching that Sinead O'Connor episode - it was one of the most surreal things I'd seen on television up till that point. You sure knew something went off script, but she was surely on the mark. Unfortunately, it destroyed her career. Given she was from Ireland, she understand the abuses of the Church in a far more direct and visceral way. Yes, it was bad in the US and elsewhere , but in Ireland, where the Catholic Church had political control, the abuses were off the chart. They're still counting the casualties.

"Less Than Zero" was about the British 1930s fascist Oswald Mosley, and Costello felt that American audiences didn't really get it - thinking, for example, that it was about JFK assassin Lee Harvey Oswald. He saw SNL as possibly being for him what the Ed Sullivan Show had been to the Beatles, and he wanted to perform a song that American audiences wouldn't be confused by. I get that his record label might have been precious about the change of plan, but I can't see why SNL were put out. Radio Radio is one of his biggest early hits, so I'm sure the audience were happy.
