Bit that always makes it real for me is: When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayin', "Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya", At seven PM, a main hatchway caved in, he said, "Fellas, it's been good to know ya". It humanises the victims in a way that just talking about the number of deaths doesn't. It's probably not what they actually said in the real tragedy, but it's a great lyric. The captain going down with his ship and his men, just accepting their fate with one last show of gratitude.

Agree.. but listen also to Louis Armstrong's Bond movie tune "We have all the time in the world".. Don't care about the movie, cause the song narrative and ideas are much stronger.. Whenever the for instance worklife gets the better of me, I remind myself of this absolute gem that tells us to take it easier. Cause it's simply our OWN time. And it's more precious than gold.

How is "cat's in the cradle' not make that list? Honestly that song is 2 and presumably 3 times the tear jerker. I remember listening to it as a kid from the kid's perspective and it made me cry. Then listening to it as a father at midlife feeling the same pressures the song references to the middle aged dad. Tears in Heaven is so emotional because Eric wrote because of personal loss of a child and only performed the song a number of times before making an announcement that he can’t even perform it anymore because it was way too emotional for him on stage. About 15 years ago, I was working at Tower Records. One day, a label rep got staffers and I into a room with a VCR and produced a promo tape. We were among the first to see the video for "Hurt" by Johnny Cash. I knew Trent Reznor's version, but Johnny owned it and it's his song. Knowing how huge Cash is in his influence and seeing him so frail near death was too much. I lost and broke down crying right there. Everyone had a similar reaction.

Tears in heaven wins for me too. I lost my dad just a weeks ago and our oldest cat last week. So currently in that very emotional spot again but only that song actually made me cry. Hallelujah is a song by anyone that always brings tears to my eyes and I refused to let it be played at my mom's funeral because I was already so emotional over it.

I saw Foreigner on the tour the year this song was released. Joe Walsh was the opener. It was so awesome as a choir in full garb rose up on risers behind them to sing along about the time they came in on the video. Never expected it. But what was more unexpected, while the band, choir, and audience was singing along, out comes Joe on a Pogo stick bouncing around the stage wearing those wire googly-eye glasses. 😂
