I hope maybe you have some priceless video footage for your family to help you remember him by. I'm afraid for us we didn't have the technology of today back in 79 so we only have photos...how I'd love to hear his voice just one more time. As a father now... "Cat's in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin ...is probably one of the hardest song for me to listen to without welling up. It sheds light on a new found respect for my father, that I never knew, I should have always had. The song saved my relationship with my father even if he didn't know it.

@@leeeverett8497 it's about a father who never has time for his son, is hardly ever home and unintentionally misses out on having a good relationship with his son. Then as he gets older and his son moves out and becomes his own man, the father wants to see him more but the son is now the one who doesn't have time for him. The song ends with the father realizing that his son has grown up and become just like him.

@@leeeverett8497 CrimsonRush117 pretty much nails it. It's about making time to be with your family despite needed to provide for them. Make the effort to spend time with them because one day they won't be there to spend time with ever again. it doesn't have to be a father son relationship but in this song it is. It's also something to be said about learning from the mistake of your elders and not repeating them.

+Ash Hudson Pretty sure it was written about drug addiction (heroin) which could certainly be transposed into Johnie's life as he struggled with addiction his whole career. Either way, it's probably one of the only other covers on the list apart from Buckley's rendition of Hallelujah that the artist pours actual emotion into the song and makes it their own. And probably the only real 'tear' jerker on the list

Simple Man is a song I treasure. My son was murdered in 2022 from the hands of his ex-girlfriend. He had his drums and guitars with amps set up in my garage. He would have my house rocking, oh how I miss his sound! Had planned to sell his Pearl drums and other things, just can't do it yet. The love a mother has for her only son, a bond that will never be broken.

One of the songs that has me sobbing like a baby is “Vincent” by Don Maclean. Bit that always makes it real for me is: When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayin', "Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya", At seven PM, a main hatchway caved in, he said, "Fellas, it's been good to know ya". It humanises the victims in a way that just talking about the number of deaths doesn't. It's probably not what they actually said in the real tragedy, but it's a great lyric. The captain going down with his ship and his men, just accepting their fate with one last show of gratitude.

John Denver made two songs that have caused me to soak many hankies with my tears. Back Home Again. It was playing in my head when I was bottomed out and came a 1/4 inch of blowing my brains out. Fortunately I didn't . On a happier note, Take Me Home Country Roads. Every time I hear it I just totally lose it. Reminds me of my old home town in rural Pennsylvania. I imagine me and my best friend walking down the unpaved road, when we have crossed over ro to the Afterlife. Barefoot, holding hands, chewing on a piece of grass, singing along, telling him, well Larry, we have arrived.

Robin Gibb's amazing, ethereal vibrato voice will make anyone cry, There has never been, nor will there ever be, a voice like his. In "Rings Around the Moon," Robin's voice was at its peak. Also, the Bee Gees sang a cover of Carole King's "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" that many who have seen the video have commented is better than the original. Their harmonies are unbeatable -- smooth, tear-jerking, and beautiful. Please reconsider.

How is "cat's in the cradle' not make that list? Honestly that song is 2 and presumably 3 times the tear jerker. I remember listening to it as a kid from the kid's perspective and it made me cry. Then listening to it as a father at midlife feeling the same pressures the song references to the middle aged dad. I am not old enough yet, but I suspect it really hits a chord with older men too seeing the world go by without them and move on...

Tears in Heaven is so emotional because Eric wrote because of personal loss of a child and only performed the song a number of times before making an announcement that he can’t even perform it anymore because it was way too emotional for him on stage. So all of that makes ‘Tears in Heaven’ very empathetical, especially when Eric Clapton gets choked up whilst singing it.

About 15 years ago, I was working at Tower Records. One day, a label rep got staffers and I into a room with a VCR and produced a promo tape. We were among the first to see the video for "Hurt" by Johnny Cash. I knew Trent Reznor's version, but Johnny owned it and it's his song. Knowing how huge Cash is in his influence and seeing him so frail near death was too much. I lost and broke down crying right there. Everyone had a similar reaction.

It was so awesome as a choir in full garb rose up on risers behind them to sing along about the time they came in on the video. Never expected it. But what was more unexpected, while the band, choir, and audience was singing along, out comes Joe on a Pogo stick bouncing around the stage wearing those wire googly-eye glasses. 😂
