I don’t buy to invest ever. I buy to enjoy. Luxury items are for those who can afford it.Those who cannot afford should steer clear.. There are many less expensive bags well made at a much cheaper price.

A lot of the patent leather bags and shoes from Chanel, Valentino and Dior that I bought years ago are unusable sticky messes, definitely not a wise investment that I can use long term. And one Chanel handbag that had plastic chain straps, the plastic all cracked within 6 years rendering the bag unusable. A lot of this crap is not the investment that people think it is.

Sure, your luxury item could cost more than what you buy it for. But I LOOOVEE how they don't take into account 1) these things aren't easy to move so it could take months or years to sell. Especially when compared to stocks, which are quite liquid and depending on your bank/investment company, you can have the money in a matter of hours/days. Plus you always know what the market price is but with luxury goods? You can guess but don't really know, you are at the mercy of the reseller who names their price 2) brokerage fees. Those resellers that sell them for you, do they do it out of the goodness of their heart? No. They will take their cut. And they name their cut. If it's a hard to move item like something very common, you are at their mercy as there won't be many who are even willing to resell your item. 3) taxes. If you sell an 'asset', you will pay taxes on it. 4) miscellaneous fees for handling/assessing/storing/cleaning the item before it is sold So sure, you could buy it for 10k. But even if you sell it for a 2x mark up at 20k - all these hidden costs might add up and you only get about 1-2k profit. Now let's say you kept it for 5 yrs before you sold it - you only made that 2k for your 5 yrs of investing/keeping it in your collection, which is only 1% per year return. In the current market, you can get a 2% return per year even by just keeping your money at a savings account, above that around 2,5-3% if it's a high yield account. Or take some risk and invest it in a index fund/stock that has a 5-6% dividend yield per year! In addition to all this, you need to put in a lot of legwork to get that profit. Go for stocks, it's easier and has better returns. Pst. Not saying you can't be lucky and make 3-4x on the item. But are you a professional in that field who follows all the trends? What style to buy? What material? What hardware? Let's say you get all of that right. But what if they do a rerelease and the market gets flooded with that new version right before you want to sell? The sale price plummets. Or there are a lot of them on the market? The price plummets. All kind of reselling is tricky and unless you are a professional who has dedicated your life to following all of the trends and knows all the resellers...maybe don't? Especially if you just buy a few items per year. You are more likely to maybe make your money back if you are lucky. But for most you will be selling at a loss.

3:57 No, it isn't a good way to control your money. You want your money to grow and pay you an income and a physical object is not an income producing asset. It's more of a store of value, but gold is a better store of value because it's actually real money and if society collapses it will still last and you can use it to start over. You are much better off with stocks and bonds because they pay you money. And in my country we have a class of guaranteed investments which are risk-free and truly passive income. Unless you intend to rent your purse to people who want to floss at events, don't do it. In any case it will wear out and you'll need insurance and it mught get stolen, and so on.

If you want a physical asset with guaranteed liquidity, buy gold. There are way too many variables with luxury fashion items (and especially art) for them to be potentially sellable in the future, let alone get any decent returns on them. Buy the luxury goods because you like them and will use them.

Stocks and bonds are not very good investments nowadays, they have been losing value in the last couple of years. Some luxury goods, if they are real/authentic, might perform better. These items can lose value if a lot of people decide to sell, or need to sell. But I'm not talking about the new Chanel bag you see in the store. The items that will retain value are Hermes Kelly bags, some Louis Vuitton, very few valuable items. I actually hate those horrible Kelly bags...
@carrino15

Some stocks i went into had 75 ROI or 50 %. If picking single stocks, you need to do research, know basic economical factors and understand the business and how it could have an edge.
@bitsmagtv
@bitsmagtv Ай бұрын
@@carrino15 It's very risky. If I had money to buy an Hermes Kelly I would buy that instead of putting money in stocks or bonds. That is totally different from buying luxury randomly. It's difficult to understand, because it's a bag, a piece of garment, opposed to some piece of a company. One has to be very informed on the stock market to invest. All that is different from mere consumption of luxury good which is what the industry needs.
@paulis5531
@paulis5531 Ай бұрын
Dacob, you couldn't have said it better. Who knows what the future will be like. Prices for rare, vintage and in good condition items may always have an audience but not necessarily a good investment. The lux items people buy are generally for one's enjoyment. Sometimes, it's a treat or tells of a milestone or something achieved.

A luxury handbag always resells for less than one pays for it, so it is not an "investment". From the moment it is paid for it is considered used. There are exceptions, but they are a small minority.

I did just sell a couple of mid-priced bags on consignment and got a bit more than I paid for them. I didn’t buy them as an investment or money maker, I just liked them at the time. I just do not see investing in luxury handbags and clothing items as realistic, maybe I could justify fine jewelry.

Hey guys, Funcle Droogs here checking in. Just because your Auntie Vera survived the stock market crash by spending all her money at Tiffany's doesn't mean you should do the same. A better and more reliable investment was when Mame married the oil baron, Beauregard Jackson Pickett Burnside. A man who loves you enough to fall off a mountain just to snap a photo of you is a far better investment than Tiffany's. Listen to Dacob, kids, he's got life figured out.

Meaningless comment since no timeframe is given. Plus the fact that Chanel's quality has been declining while they raise prices is indisputable. Just look at the no longer 24 carat gold plating which has been consigned to history. Along with the quality of the leather. But you are almost surely referring to faults, which Chanel should not have any FULL STOP. Not for those prices. But they had the audacity to dispute and gaslight customers who pointed them out. The name has been trashed. Justify it all you like.
