The whole point of a freebie is to introduce customers to other products that they might want to buy. If they reduce freebies, people won’t want to buy their other products. Chanel products are expensive and people won’t buy if they don’t know whether it is worth it. The sample gets a customer to try the product before buying and if they like then they buy it. Chanel is really shooting themselves in the foot here.

It baffles me at how wrong Chanel is going about it, even under a cut-costs-greedy-corporation prism. If they want to spend less money on samples, then they should conduct it as it should. Have your marketing team crunch the data, decide which samples you are going to prioritize based on the product strategy, maybe produce more of the same samples for some economy of scale if you're that desperate, reduce the number of samples sent to each store and trust the SAs to "feel" if the client wants to try the new product or just collect samples. Sending a portfolio to the SAs just feel so... Passive agressive.

Honestly this is crazy! To the person that said we shouldn’t expect samples, instead be delighted when we get one - crazy talk! We buy luxury because of the quality, the packaging, the experience… Those samples are part of that experience and entices people to branch out into the brand further. If I make a purchase and have a bad experience or cannot get a complimentary sample as if I’m putting out Chanel then WHY would I continue to buy? That’s what pre-loved is for 🤷🏽‍♀️. Great video!

I turned 50 and can tell you that in the 80es/90es, if you were even a lambda buyer (not sampler chaser) you got a lot of gifts with your items. Chanel had 4ml, 8 ml, 19 ml EDT, up to 8 ml EDP and 1,5 perfumes... And much more. I don't like to see samples for sale on the Web. In 2022, I consider fashion and beauty has a huge source of pollution. But as a client I consider that the purchase experience, the quality of the service and a big part of my desire to buy again are GONE. So I made the decision to stop the interaction with someone. I buy on-line, what I need or want. This is mostly all about profit. Making more, giving lesser than less. And I have no frustration when I don't get samples because the SA doesn't do his job or doesn't like my face. Chanel is the only one company where I was refused to buy something. In the very early 90es I wanted to buy Cuir de Russie and the abomination in flesh (aka, the SA) told me that it was only available rue Cambon. I think it's askill rated when you apply at Chanel: your ability and enthusiasm to be rude, unkind and set your frustrations free on your clients. Anyway, call me a masochist. I have bought may be 100+ perfumes from them since I started my oversprayer career. Lol.

For instance, the sustainable move isn’t because companies really want it. It’s because European legislation is shifting so much that companies need to follow suit and unlike the US; comply and become even more strict than the laws. In case the laws do change. But CEOs, at least real ones can do corporate shakeups and reorganize the whole org under them. If she had that amount of control in four months the internal team will see it. That is because she already has a month in if I recall. CEOs hire outside consultants; that analyze the company and its fail points. From there and their background: they bring in new team members (their networking) and within a year or two the company is a full reflection on the CEOs. This new ceo may actually ask to redraw the contracts with the manufacturers of the made to wear clothes line. They may outsource differently at that point. And quality may go up to sustain the current price levels or if they do see a decline in sales and less profits; go down. It really all depends on how much true control she has. Now if she’s just a ceo for image; or to focus on just one thing while the original owners continue on now then she may very well leave. CEOs usually like autonomy to make those decisions; in two years out she’s out if she sees she can’t make executive decisions which may truthfully save the company and sees misfires.

Lol..I am sorry (not sorry) but it seems very shady to rely on photos taken from social media (which is a medium famous for fabricating reality) to assess whether the shops are giving away too many free samples. I would assume a company would keep a paper trail of their stock, see how much they give away monthly, and compare it to previous months and years etc. Seems like a way more accurate and professional way to do it. But what do I know.

I see Dior is getting more and more attention on social media because they are known to be generous with their samples and gifts, it is shocking to see Chanel going in a completely different direction that is just driving customers away. Here in Mexico we didn’t get anything special for the holidays, no packaging, no cards, nothing but posters in the stores, and since the majority of the beauty boutique or sections are under bigger department stores that give out their own branded bags, Chanel didn’t even send regular bags, they usually have very little stock in samples and bags. It is depressing seeing how Chanel is turning into dust because they’re too greedy to keep trying to give the experience. The only part of Chanel i supported was the fragrances, because two Jewish brothers had managed to get it from coco Chanel all While she was conspiring to be a nazi collaborator. I loved Karl Lagerfeld but still couldn’t bring myself to buy Chanel. But before i knew all the stuff with coco and the brands history, i went into the store with my deaf mother to buy her a beautiful jewel toned camera bag. I went to the representative and said “i want to see the jewel toned camera bags in the window” the woman didn’t understand what jewel tones were! I finally got it across and was signing to interpret what the woman was saying to my mom. My mom went to ask a question and the rep literally said “i am not dealing with this.” Looked at my deaf mom and went on to say “if you need to ask something you can ask me, and not go through your son”. My mom got teary eyed because she felt very stupid. This ableist bitch infuriated me. Needless to say we left the store, went to Jimmy Choo and got my mom amazing shoes. Anyway the point is that Chanel has always been awful in terms of customer service so this idea they won’t even give samples and then how they attacked your account, it just blows my mind. I am not so shocked about this because Chanel is the last brand (high end but mainstream) who do not sell sets. You don't have that crap: one perfume and flipflops or smartphone cover. You also don't find them cheaper on the grey market. The Exclusive line is one of the best Niche. Because Niche now doesn't mean that much. Way too many brands coming from nowhere but a marketing research... They are certainly way too much self-confident about who they could be, represent and what their consumers will accept because the status they represent. But who knows the future... I went to Chantel today and jeez i was extremly surprised ! The SA gave me a tone of freebies (2 bleu de chanel samples (EDP and Perfume) for my BF, No 1 Perfume, Chanel L'eau and Chanel no5 Eau première samples + a makeup pouch , a chinese new year red enveloppe and No 1 Red bandeau for the hair. I guess im super lucky. It was my first exeperience there. I found out before Christmas.from a Chanel Manager that they culled the samples in half last year. I mentioned to her that I wasn't getting many samples anymore. I.e. £100+ spend, a SA gave me 1 mini camelia cream. Seriously! I told a manager in another store and she said Chanel had told them to give out a lot less. That's worse than online! Yes, it does annoy me that people post they're 10 freebies and some of them you can't even get in dept. Stores, it's gloating and we know it's because they've done a number of purchases in various boutiques as you say.

I think this is about perception that if something is free then it appears to have no value. Chanel is on a serious mission to improve and maintain the status of the brand. In no area of any business does cutting back on samples, or price increases etc equate to a proportional increase in employee salary. Talent acquisition is more expensive than what you may think. You are right that apart of this is about image and they are trying to control it.

Not hiring new people is one thing Kristin. FIRING a bunch of already hired people (as Chanel did) is a whole other can of worms which you seem to have not wanted to mention in your comment. Oh and another thing: they have lowered the commissions since, you know, the bag prices went up so it would not be fair to give the sales associates the same percentage of commission anymore as before since the bags now cost more. So that logic is legitimized but increasing people’s salaries and maybe also letting them have their lunch brake each day at work is too much to ask for? My thoughts too. And also, they get so many samples and freebies and they almost never give out even half of them by the time a collection has passed so they throw most of it away or the staff gets to keep it… 🤷🏻

Stop giving away samples and freebies is insane, it's the way for the brand to make us curious of their other products. Everyone knows that. But sadly Chanel don't care about their regular costumers anymore. And I stopped caring much about the brand when they reformulated the Le Exclusifs and made them edp. And the sky high price point they are now, is just laughable. I will always have some love for the brand, but they are being ridiculous. Shame on you Chanel
