Petting a monitor while it eats.... That is a new one for me. Proves they're not "just a stupid lizard".

Your videos are brilliant! Since childhood it has been my belief that reptiles have a soul, intelligence and feelings. Watching your videos always puts me in a good mood. I just love observing such an extraordinary friendship, after all, that's what having a pet is SUPPOSED to be all about!!!!! ❤😊

Great video! Lots of good info. They sure are smart. Ive actually taught my Nile to come running to me when I call his name. They are also more than happy to put that brain to use when it comes to food. I dont think ive ever seen an animal more obsessed with food than my Nile.

You have a little tiny velociraptor. Kevin I swear you have taken the place of every superstar and celebrity I've ever idolized in my life. I have become your number one fan. Now I'm sure other people will say the same but they're wrong. I don't have enough years left in my life to do with what I wished I could have done had I known about these amazing creatures were even around! I tell you that on my next time around things are going to be different. I'm going to have every kind of monitor lizard Under the Sun and then some. Thank you for sharing this world with me. And thank you for showing people how you can raise animals with kindness and love and repetition and consistency. To watch you reach under the chin of some of these very intimidating looking reptiles and watch how they just love your touch. That's so unbelievable to witness. I thought the black water monitors were my favorite but then you showed us. Crock monitor. That was Dino the dinosaur. So I will add him to my menagerie.

Kevin, I learn every time you post videos of these beautiful animals. I love to watch your videos and truly look forward to them. I wish the videos were *longer!* =) I enjoy them. You've so much knowledge to share with everyone, it's such a joy to sit and listen to you talk and share your love of these animals. I also enjoy when you share your snakes too. 🌱Be Blessed ღ 🌼

I love these videos and I love monitor lizards with a passion. I raised an Ornate Nile Monitor from 21” and maybe a pound to 72” and about 40-50 lbs depending on time of year and feeding amounts. He was a monster, and I loved him. He was also a pet, by some definition. He did amazing things that would make you believe he was truly tamed. He lived in the garage which was 30’x24’ with 12’ ceilings and he was the best watch dragon ever. From around May till about the end of September he would scratch at the garage door by mid morning wanting to go outside, and every evening when the sun dropped he would scratch at he door to come back in. Mind you I would never leave him totally unsupervised as I was lulled into believing he wouldn’t stray too many times before. Stories to fill a book. Everyone from the police, to the fire department, to the Catholic nuns whose huge garden/park abutted the rear of my yard, had all gotten pictures with that dragon, and he was slightly feared, yet adored by all. BUT, as with all things in life, risk assessment is very important. Just like you don’t run a knife blade quickly across your palm to see if it’s sharp, you don’t put your face in the face of a dog you didn’t know. Anything can happen at any time. A 12’ python should never be handled by a person who is alone, or at least without someone else near enough to hear you scream. If they suddenly bite you and catch you off guard and get around your neck or a couple of good wraps around your torso, you are done. Maybe you’ve done it a thousand times with no issues. That’s great and truly beautiful. You trust your dog to not bite you and your family, but even if that were to happen, the consequences are limited, unless it’s a very powerful dog and enough time elapses that it could do enough damage to kill a person. So monitor lizards can be incredibly rewarding. It’s been since January of 2012 that my boy died from a winter time respiratory infection that just wouldn’t heal. And to this day I all but cry when I’ve got certain leftovers that I know he loved but no dragon to give it to. But if you put anything near a monitor’s mouth, to trust that it won’t bite that thing is a bit, O don’t know how to say it, maybe not naive, cause this guy is certainly not naive, but the maneuver is certainly risky. It’s not like they are gonna bite your hand and no big deal, lesson learned, not again. Even a small monitor can serious damage your hand. I got lucky one time when my boy accidentally hit my hand across the whole palm, and it left a big V on either side and some slicing on my thumb muscle, but I got lucky at that. If I had allowed him to shake much it would have been much worse. Once he realized he had my ha d and not food, he let loose, but not before I squeezed his neck right behind his jaws really hard, smacked him on the head, flicked him on the cheek, all very hard, and he was like a vice. He didn’t let go until he wanted to. It wouldn’t take much for one of those precious water monitors to bite, whether on purpose or by accident, and do a lot of damage. People with slighter builds and/or maybe softer skin could end up with several stitches. I really don’t believe that monitors who have been in captivity for more than a few years would have any serious bacteria in their saliva, as is the legend. Now if they consume a lot of rotted meat, which is in itself a mistake, then they’ll have septic saliva, but otherwise not so much. But I truly feel that showing how closely a person can interact with these lizards is great for showing how smart and beautiful these animals are, but the risky maneuvers with the hands, fingers, face, etc, is inviting disaster. If the only fear was a very slight cut or scratch, no biggie. My boy scratched me almost every day for more than 15 years, and never an infection, but a couple of small scars form where a claw went in and got hooked pretty deep into my skin, still no big deal, and part of monitor stewardship. But bites can be deep and damaging, and a risk maybe not fully understood by would be owners. To give them a false or even guarded sense of safety from a bite while interacting these ways is just inviting permanently damaged digits. In my garage/shop I forbid socked feet, especially white socked feet. They would be asking for a dragon bite. Toes weren’t such a big deal, but even weary. Socked feet might as well be a juicy white rat to a dragon. Once they switch on, they are going to at least taste what they think is food, kind of like a shark. By the time they realized your feet are not dinner, your toes are bleeding like crazy and you are sorry you wore white socks in the dragon’s domain. Please be careful around these guys. While they are incredibly beautiful and smart and I truly miss mine, they are top tier predators who in the wild would bite first and ask questions later, so in captivity we should feel very lucky to even be in their presence and even tolerated, but don’t stick your fingers near its mouth and then get surprised by a nip from a baby dragon, or a crushing test nibble from an adult. By that time the risk assessment has been disproven and your hand damaged, most likely enough to require stitches. Not fun, but definitely a learning experience. Ok, maybe a little fun.😎😉

is there any health benefit to feeding chicken feet or is it just because it's cheap? I thought you particular lizard would most benefit from eating meat varieties.

Check their website- newenglandreptilestore Socialized (meaning theyll crawl on you the moment you get them) Water Monitor hatchlings run about 1K+ USD, get about 6ft (mostly tail) and live over 12 years and require a lot of space so a huge enclosure which is not insignificant for budgeting.
