We were returning to Syracuse from Ontario today and chose to go the long way round via Niagara in order to avoid the major lake effect at the east end of Lake Ontario, but all our navigation apps were quite happy to route us down I81 and through this mess so I can understand how some were unprepared for what they encountered. In those sort of conditions its all to easy to lose the road. Fortunately I had checked ahead and was in a position to take more time and spend more on tolls to get home without having to deal with this crazy lake effect snow.

I was at Fort Drum after 9-11-2001. I had never seen a whiteout before. We had three of them happen. I remember the base shut down. A whiteout is an extreme amount of snow coming down and all you see is white. ❄️🌨️☃️

I've never understood this. I grew up in Fairbanks Alaska. There's a point where you just don't go out unless it's very necessary. Hell a snow machine would make more sense.

I was statioed there, they had 45 inches of snow overnight and only had a 2 hour delay for school, we had over 200 + inches of snow, they just keep going, The Temps are more like Anchorage Alaska. And Fairbanks gets too cold for you to risk going anywhere in those conditions.

@MrCanadiain9 күн бұрын
They do, but even the best winter tires wont help when you run into snowfall that was forecast over the weekend as 4 to 6 FEET of accumulation in that small corridor at the east end of Lake Ontario. If your vehicle beaches, it doesnt matter how good your tires are, you are not going to get out under your own steam. I did a double take to check the forcast was feet and not inches and even with Blizzaks, AWD, Diff locks and Snow mode I decided Id have an easier time getting home by detouring around the other end of the lake and hoping that the lake effect snow coming off Erie was far enough south to not impact the interstate between Buffalo and Syracuse.
@MariktheWolf9 күн бұрын
@@MrCanadiain most ppl here dont drive with snow tires...i live in the dunkirk area up in the higher terrain where it is now over 3ft...i wish they would make snow tires mandatory and stop using salt...its not worth the damage to well everything...there is a point where roads become so deep that is impassable to anything but a tracked vehicle...but they have done well to keep up with it here...
