Wave 6 is Hiding a Huge Secret

After finally getting some time to play Wave 5, it's time to do what we do here: start the Wave 6 speculation. Today we are going to talk about everything but the tracks, and go over the surprises that Nintendo might have up their sleeves. While any individual one of these potential secrets seems unlikely, I think there probably is something currently hiding from plain sight. Why do I think this? Well, it all starts with examining what Wave 5 gave us.

Isn't it weird how they've been messing around with characters that have alternate forms in the roster lately? First, they did something that caused Mario, Peach, Tanooki, Cat, Metal and Pink Gold to stop appearing as rivals in GP, then they fixed that... but made it so those same characters and the two Links can no longer appear as CPUs at the same time (like, Tanooki will not appear as CPU if regular Mario is there, etc.)... Makes me think they have something alt-related planned. If Diddy and Funky are added, they gotta throw in Paratroopa as an alt for Koopa so Double Dash!! and Wii can be fully represented finally!

Actually Diddy only started making appearances due to Rare being bought by Microsoft which meant Nintendo had free reigns on the DKC cast, as originally like with MT64, DKJr was originally was planned to be DK’s partner in Double Dash but when Rare was acquired by Microsoft they basically scrapped Jr for Diddy Kong, it’s why Diddy never made appearances during the N64 era of Mario spin-off especially MT64 it was due to him and all the other DK characters being owned by Rare

Also worth noting as well but Diddy & Bowser Jr are considered rivals with each other since they’re the player 2 to the big guys (DK & Bowser) and have been playable in the same games together with a couple of exceptions whereas Dixie & Funky don’t seem to have a rival that could work I mean you could have Wendy & Roy as potential rivals with them but we don’t know

Perhaps the surprise is more then 2 characters. Perhaps they finally add an "Elimination" Style for Balloon Battle and/or Bob-omb blast. Maybe they finally add "72 Races" and "96 Races" as an option. Who knows. Maybe Wave 6 won't have any surprises other then Wii Rainbow Road and SNES Bowser's Castle 3 (even though we kinda already suspect it). Only tome will tell

I feel like there has to be some sort of reward for getting all 3 stars for every cc on the bcp tracks, and I feel like the nintendo thing to do would be to give us a special mario alt (like gold mario), I'm thinking its either king mario or snes mario

I expect the big surprise to be reverse mode. Similar to mirror mode, it'll be locked to 150cc. I mean, reverse is a tour exclusive feature. And the booster course pass is mostly tour focussed, so that would make the most sense imo.

I actually found some evidence to support this theory. In the track "squeaky clean sprint", I found some potential evidence that supports a reverse mode. Look behind you when entering the bathtub. There is a suspiciously placed metal grid that doesn't do anything. There is no good reason for it being there, since you normally jump over it. Then later in the track, when you exit the drainage pipe. Look behind you again. The open lid on the pipe has an arrow pointing down. But that is where you came from, it is pointing the wrong way. Arrows in Mario kart 8 are very obvious, so why would this one be hidden behind the racers and facing the wrong way? I think this basically confirms reverse mode. But maybe I just see things that confirm it because I want it to be true...idk.

personally, this is a longshot for me but here. I think they are going to make the final 2 DLC Pauline and Diddy Kong but then pull a gold mario and say "beat all the dlc cups on grand prix 150cc with 3stars and you'll unlock funky kong!" to add him in and also make more people buy the dlc.

My theory is that they might add 8 new characters by adding a new column. It was never confirmed that there would only be 6 new characters and there is so far only one column because they only added what was necessary to have the characters they have added so far.

I wholeheartedly agree that wave 6 will have an unexpected surprise just like wave 3 had with custom items. I want vs. to be expanded to allow for 96 total races so that we can race on all tracks in the game consecutively, but I don't think that's big enough of a surprise. Fingers crossed for something new battle mode related.

I think another possibility is that wave 6 will have an extra final, bonus cup. Just because it would round at the course count at a nice, even 100, and be a neat surprise. Maybe it could be exclusively made up of fan favorite courses.

Pauline is my only realy priority for characters, but seeing more than two added would be nice. I don't know if we'll get an extra row and/or existing characters and alts sharing a slot to make more room, but I'd be all for it. Then we just need two GCN tracks, one being DK Mountain, and I'll be satisfied.

Since the press release specifically said the new characters would be from past Mario Kart games, I don't think Geno or Mallow are on the table. It's the same terminology they use for the courses, and although some tracks are marketed as "new", they've all been datamined in Tour ahead of time. Unless Geno or Mallow show up in Tour datamines ahead of Wave 6, I just don't see them contradicting the press release.

Wave 6 needs one track from Arcade GP. Only one, because most of them suck. Im thinking something from the Yoshi Cup because of its unique gimmick with the cardboard cutouts flying across the track. (The cups in that game are one track four times over like tour but worse)

Given Nintendo, I honestly don't expect Wave 6 to be hiding a big blowout surprise, however I do wish and hope for a lot of these suggestions. I personally want Funky Kong and Diddy Kong more, but I don't anticipate they'll do that since I think ultimately Pauline has more popularity, Funky Kong would be an appeal to MKWii fans.

There isn’t really a unknown nitro anymore. Datamines pretty much confirmed that Moonview Highway replaced the nitro while the last track in Tour’s files is the last city track that we haven’t seen yet.

I think the thought that "Oh they added 3 characters out of the 5 they promised to add in Wave 5, that must mean they'll add a whole new mode in wave 6!" doesn't really hold up, like, it's very obvious Nintendo's been figuring out the BCP as they develop it, they surely didn't plan to add new characters at all when they announced Wave 1. This logic that bc Diddy didn't appear in a mainline Mario game and thus isn't a Mario character and thus doesn't deserve it is also weird, is Waluigi also not a Mario character? Was Toadette not a Mario character til she appeared in a cameo in Galaxy? Why do only mainline games count? Diddy is added to Mario games because he's popular and he's the co-star of the DK series, which is a sister series to the Mario series, not because they "were forced to by DD's gimmick and then kept him for Wii bc they were forced to so they didn't look like they were cutting content even if Petey was cut". When MK8 originally came out the director literally apologized for Diddy not being in the game.

I've claimed practically none of what you're saying I've claimed. I've just given possibilities based on what I have seen up to this point. I don't get to claim who is and isn't "deserving." I'm just seeking to find potential explanations. As for Waluigi, it is a little simpler to call him a Mario character because the Mario spinoffs are really the only appearances he has made. Even still, they cut him from Mario Kart 7. Why wouldn't he be a priority, unless there was actually some merit to them wanting to pick characters stemming from the main series? I don't believe Toadette would've appeared at all had she not been created to be Toad's partner in Double Dash either. Maybe down the road. But the need for a partner did create her. As for Petey not being in MKWii, they likely just hit their quota. They had 24 characters and 8 heavy characters already. Removing Dry Bones/Diddy/Birdo/Bowser Jr. would've created a weirder disparity, and would have resulted in not having more characters than Double Dash, so they needed to keep some around for sure. If MK8's director was truly sorry about Diddy not being in the original game, they've had plenty of opportunities to right that wrong as well. They just haven't yet.

I think that they will throw us for a loop and include another Non-Mario Character, but not Diddy Kong. My soul read is telling me they introduce Kirby, a Kirby Theme Kart (Either the Warp Star or Dragoon) and a course to round it out "Kirby's Dream Land"... What if the crossover drivers who have gender variants stop taking up multiple driver spots? Villager and Inkling becoming 1 spot each frees up 2 spots, for 4 total in the final wave. Guess what's also 4 total? DK Jr, Diddy Kong, Funky Kong, and Dixie Kong. From Super, Double Dash, Wii, and Tour. It could be a huge Kong blowout, with the same Direct the teaser premieres in also teasing the next DK game for 2024.

Diddy _IS_ a Mario character, and here's why he's seen as important. --Diddy is one of the main characters featured on the official Mario Portal website. Diddy Kong is important enough to be listed over characters like Toadette. --Diddy got his own Mario series Amiibo. Note that Bowser Jr did _not._ Bowser Jr only has his Smash Bros amiibo. Diddy has both Smash _and_ Mario. --When Mario Kart first released on the Wii U, there was an interview with the director of Mario Kart 8. And he actually apologized to fans of Bowser Jr., Dry Bones, King Boo, and Diddy Kong. All of these characters ended up in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, EXCEPT for Diddy Kong. Idk why they would apologize for not including him, unless he was seen as important enough to include in the first place. Regarding Funky Kong? I really don't think he has a chance. The fact some people feel confident enough to say that he could even replace Diddy is baffling to me. There's no way he'd make it in over Diddy Kong. And Pauline being in Mario Kart Tour was a big deal. She's heavily associated with New York Minute, as both her and the course appeared in the first ever Tour of the game. I don't see how Funky Kong would be prioritized over her, unless they just decided to appeal to Mario Kart Wii fans over Mario fans as a whole. Pauline is a very relevant character. Funky can come back another day, but Pauline getting in would be a big deal.

Thing is, if they truly were sorry about Diddy Kong being cut, he'd be in by now. We've had 5 waves of character DLC in MK8 now since then, and nothing. Perhaps he's just been unlucky since he has been involved elsewhere. But the biggest question mark of all is still just MK8 itself. Maybe it happens still, but I'm not sure it's close to a lock. Maybe closer to a coin flip. They've taken out Waluigi for Honey Queen before, so we'll have to see.

I feel like Diddy is the most likely character for returning, he's definitely important, he's consistently been in most Mario Spinoffs since Double Dash, and he has a Mario Kart Hot Wheels toy too, no way he's not being considered. Geno would be cool, but I feel like if they're not in Tour, it's probably not going to happen. Here's what I think the 4 (bc I truly believe Tanooki Mario & Cat Peach will be converted into alts) characters in Wave 6 will be: - Diddy Kong - Funky Kong - Pauline - Hammer Bro (specifically for being cut from MKWii and being iconic as all hell)

The original 8U DLCs are just a completely different category as opposed to the booster pass characters. The gimmick of them was literally outside characters / courses infiltrating Mario Kart, that's not what the Booster Pass is

The booster pack does not specify the type of character from a specific series will be getting in, and as I recall, I never seen any statement from Nintendo as to what reason the guest characters are there, also, these days Nintendo considers the Donkey Kong series as part of the Mario franchise anyway, on top of that, Diddy Kong had his own racing game thats been dead for a while so its all the more reason Diddy should be there, he would fit in so much more, as for Geno and Mallow, they would have no chance given how those characters are owned by Square Enix (and would contradict "what the booster pass is" since they technically aren't Nintendo characters), plus the fact that Geno was a highly requested character for Smash and only appeared as a Mii costume twice really makes his appearance in a Mario Kart game of all places much slimmer

The 8U DLCs were literally designed around the gimmick of bringing in outside characters (Hyrule Circuit + Link in DLC1, Animal Crossing + Villager + Isabelle DLC2, F-Zero Tracks in both). The Deluxe launch was an extension of this with playable Inklings + Urchin Underpass as a battle stage. The reason they did this was to sell DLC packs on the premise that you could play as out of series characters. Tour came out well after that, and the Booster Pass is taking content from that game entirely. If this wasn't the case, MK8 would've had more DLC like 5 years earlier. This DLC is cheaper than the 8U DLC when considering the cost of any individual track, and it's likely because the content is mainly recycled rather than brand new like the old 8U DLC packs. If Diddy Kong was considered as truly main series, I think he would've been in by now. He is low on the priority list. As for Geno and Mallow, I don't think they'll show up either, but this isn't some impossible conversation. Nintendo is already remaking SMRPG currently. There's incentives for Square to want them in Mario Kart before it re-releases. The Geno in Smash buzz never made him fit Smash more than MK either. Maybe he isn't a "Nintendo" character, but he is a Mario character.

I left a comment a week ago on a different video talking about how I think that fourth possibility you mentioned is definitely a possibility, and I’d be super down for that. I hadn’t considered new battle courses, though, and I think that’d be pretty awesome. The dream is Funky Stadium and Funky Kong together, but the super dream is even more characters. On my old comment, I mentioned the possibility of combining some characters together to save room for even more newcomers. If they combined the Inklings and Villagers, that’s four slots for new characters. Can you imagine? That would mean we could get the two popular monkeys on top of two other picks, which could be crazy ones like R.O.B. or Super Mario RPG characters or more predictable ones like Pauline or Hammer Bro. (I think Hammer Bro would be kind of sick because they could also do Fire Bros, Ice Bros, Boomerang Bros, etc. as alternate skins.) Knowing Nintendo, though, it’s probably more likely that they just stick with two characters rather than surprise us. But there’s no point in pretending there’s no better possibility.

The thing about items is that it's only TWO. Adding two items wouldn't necessarily be hard, especially if the items were the FIB and the giant banana or bowser shell. Only adding two items doesn't take much time, and it could also lead to item adjustments (like blooper decreasing maximum speed by 5%, fire flowers work like how they do in 7, triple items rotate faster and change positions as they break to defend you better) If they do add FIB back, then I would want the choice to swap items. Being able to swap items right now would be a BIT broken if you're frontrunning, but with the option of getting a FIB and not being able to defend yourself, it would make it worth adding the swap items back. I don't think they're going to make an entire new mode, unless they have an entire SECTOR of the team working on it. Wave 3 very likely got pushed back because of the halfpipes (and likely why wave 2 was pushed to August and not July so we wouldn't be stuck without a wave for too long), so I don't think that they would add a whole new mode. If they added any new mode, being able to swap items would likely be a new mode. I think what's going to happen is that they're going to surprise us with the characters. It will be diddy kong and pauline as the new characters, but they'll reveal that you will be rewarded for completing all of the DLC tracks on 150cc. That reward is an alternate skin for donkey kong, being Funky Kong. It's a great way to add him back while also adding fan favorites back. This would only happen if we do get alt skins in wave 6, which is EXTREMELY likely considering how many alt skins we're seeing in tour the past couple of months/year. Considering how battle mode is treated in Tour, I don't think that we'll be getting any battle mode maps.

I'm pretty convinced that for wave 6, they're gonna go all out and add a whole new column, with the new characters being pauline, diddy kong, funky kong, dixie kong, king bob omb and monty mole/nabbit. This would work perfectly because they can make the extra 2 slots on the bottom for mallow and geno to go with the release of the new rpg, which would be the perfect 2 spots for them. I'm just not fully sure that they will only release 2 characters to end off the whole DLC, and it would be way cooler if they ended it with a bang like this.

I have a crazy theory about the two last characters, what if we don’t get Diddy, Funky or Pauline? There’s definitely more characters that you could make hypothetical points for, and I think the two characters that have the most outside of the main three are the SNES duo from Tour, Mario and DKJr. The BCP started in 2022, five years after Deluxe came out. I don’t think it was ever confirmed, but it’s possible that the BCP was made to celebrate Mario Kart’s 30th anniversary. And now it’s almost over, it’s very convenient that there’s two spots left. It would make sense to put them together too, because then it would feel less like a homage and more like a random choice. Like, why would they put in another Mario if it weren’t paired with DK Jr? Saving them for last also gives the devs more time to work out their perspective shifting gimmick in the MK8 engine. Do I actually think these are the last two characters? Probably not. I mean, it’s possible, But my main point is that you can essentially find valid arguments for any character. Because what happens if Nintendo doesn’t go for brand recognition with Pauline? What if Nintendo doesn’t go for fan favourites with Funky Kong? The only true decider for the last two characters is Nintendo’s highly specific whims and whatever they themselves are aiming to achieve. There’s really no point in following the popular consensus when characters like Wiggler prove that we’re still in for the unexpected. If we’re going to follow this Schrödinger’s cat format of speculation, then have fun with it and believe what you want.

Alternate costumes makes the most sense in my mind as they spent all that time creating them for tour, and as we know that game will eventually shut down, persevering them in 8dx would make sense and would add a lot more variety online. The only problem that comes to my mind is with that is some of the princess character alts not being able to use the bikes or atvs with something like Kimono peach or something because it might look a little awkward. Weird thought but figured I’d point it out. Also I know this won’t happen, but removing the invincibility stat would be nice because it serves next to no purpose now with how many characters and vehicle parts are viable now. I just see no reason for it to not go back to how it was pre wave 3 as it just feels like a dumb way to punish players for using viable parts or characters.

Ok guys hear me out on this, ROB, while unlikely, makes sense as the final character. The row the final character is in is the same one with all of the crossover characters, so it’d feel a bit weird having a mario/mario-adjacent character like funky/diddy or pauline take that slot. ROB however, would fit right in, not to mention the fact that ds is one of two games that hasn’t had representation from the dlc yet (the other being wii, obviously). But yeah I’m done cooking now, I highly doubt ROB will make it in but I really hope he does just because it’d be really funny.

This isn't anything too major, but I would like to see them add a CPU difficulty higher than Hard. Maybe call it 'Master' difficulty or something? I say this because if you've been playing them game for as long as I have (since launch pretty much), Hard CPUs are just too easy to beat now. Sure, they can still get me from time to time, but that's mostly due to me getting bad luck with items rather than them being genuinely good. Not to mention, even on Hard difficulty, CPUs still follow very predictable patterns that you can easily exploit, such as them letting go of their items after a certain period of time, leaving them wide open for a Red Shell. If there was a Master difficulty, they could maybe have them be more strategic with their items and perform techniques closer to that of actual human players. Again, this wouldn't really be a groundbreaking new addition or anything, but it would certainly help to make races with CPUs a lot more interesting and challenging. And yes, I know online exists and that's where the real challenge is at, but sometimes... you don't always feel like playing online, you know?

This is a really common counterargument, but I'm going to tell you why it's not really applicable now. - Link, Villager, etc, all came to the game as part of DLC packs where the main gimmick of the packs were characters / courses from outside the Mario universe. They were literally the selling point, and this has not been true of the Booster Course Pass. - Diddy Kong would not be first in line if they were taking more outside selections. Kirby / Pikachu would legitimately be the characters you would be expecting in that case, as they are more recognizable / popular. - The reason why Diddy is more likely to make it in than characters like Kirby is because there is more of a gray area to whether or not he is actually a Mario character. - With this being said, he is one of the least prevalent characters when it comes to presence in Mario games. If he was as popular with Nintendo as fans think he should be, he probably would've been in the game already. Whether or not Nintendo considers him to be a priority Mario character is a legitimate question. He can be in the game if they want him to be. He's in Tour. Tour has like every possible character. The question is if he is considered a priority, really.

I really don't think they're playing Wave 6 safe, Pauline / Diddy are easy but it won't bring hype the same way as Funky / Geno. Costumes are an intressting idea but almost seems like too much content, Battle Mode isn't that relevant right now either. Double Dash wasn't even Diddy's first Mario spinoff appearance; Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour beat it by about half a year. Diddy's also been in roughly the same number of Mario spinoffs as Birdo at this point - still more than Rosalina - and he's the only character at this point to be in two mainline Mario Kart games (Double Dash and Wii) and not 8. As far as the spinoffs are concerned, he's Mario enough.

I have a number of theories as to what can come for Wave 6. 1. I believe they will add 2 new items, those being the Heart and Super Bell. It fits perfectly as it matches the remaining slots with the item select screen, plus, Daisy Cruiser hinted at these items. While driving on the map you see flags for all the different items…including the Heart and Super Bell. I understand this was from Tour and could just be a leftover thing but I thing these items match up really well for MK8. 2. I also believe they will add a Shop. In addition to unlocking vehicles with coins, you can then use those coins in the shop to buy alternates for some of the characters, as well as the karts. I believe they will add a few more karts, such as the ice cream vehicle from tour. That kart had multiple alts in tour so it would be cool to get them in MK8. However, character alts are a much safer bet then vehicle alts. 3. I do think new battle mode courses and missions are cool but I think they have less of a chance, however I am still rooting for their inclusion. It is possible that some of these ideas can be implemented in future waves (assuming that there are more after Wave 6 based on the wording of the ad). There is also a part of me that thinks Piranha Plant Pipeline will NOT be in Wave 6 mainly because of the Title Screen for Tour. There is still a city track that we haven’t discovered (aside from Madrid, Spain). The title screen features a pyramid leading people to believe it is based on Egypt. Piranha Plant Pipeline feels way too cluttered for MK8 so I believe there will be 3 city tracks, like in the previous two waves. Whether this aligns with the code names (ID Gaps) from tour or not, I’m not sure. I imagine the Acorn Cup will have Madrid and Egypt, then the Spiny Shell Cup will have Rome and Piranha Plant Cove. If there is anything that does not match up, feel free to inform me!

They could also add the datamined battle gamemode in tour called “spiral.” This could be scrapped, but we don’t really know. I just think the huge surprise is that we are getting more than 2 characters (by grouping alts), and we are getting alts to go along with them. Hammer Bro. would be a great choice to bring back simply because has has the other bros as alts, so it really just seems like 4 characters instead of 1. (also, not only would R.O.B. look weird, but he literally can’t come. Tour doesn’t add non-Mario characters or kart parts, and these character models are from tour. Poochy also can’t come due to him being on the mailbox on YI.) (also also, moonview highway replaced a nitro track in the prefix leak. One other possible surprise addition would be a bundle of kart parts from past games…which honestly I’d be ecstatic about, as I am kind of rather sick and tired of seeing the same karts for all these years. Also, one potential aspect of the last two characters I thought of that they may share is that they might have different models depending on if they’re in a cart vs on a bike (and thus sort of making it _4_ different unique models to end the pass with). Birdo came solo due to also coming with a bunch of different colors. The next 3 came together due to not having any alternates. And then these last two might be tied together due to those alternate models. If so, that would mean it’d be Pauline with her dress in karts and a biker suit for bikes (though honestly I bet they’d give her her mayor suit instead), and…some other character that can’t just work as is on a bike. And the only past character left I can think of that would have that issue would be ROB…so I guess it’d be him?

@@DonathanXVI I believe my go-to in MK DS eventually became ROB on the Banisher, with the joke in my head being that ROB ran on fossil fuel. Also, we need some kind of cloud based kart since Lakitu not even having the option of riding in one in 8 feels like a crime.
