I have gotten pretty lucky with Photographers in the 2 years doing weddings. Most of them already know what We are looking for, and have the couple or wedding party do poses over again with movement "for video purposes". I also have worked with many that ask me before we are done with certain things if I need anything. Video seems to already be in decline lately, and this video could be detrimental to us. Glad he reached out, because it is unfortunate he feels this way. I always start my day by having a conversation with the photographer about my plans and that I am there to work WITH them, and not against them. It makes both of our days and the couples experience so much better.
@WaywardNorthАй бұрын
@@backlinefilmsI think that’s why videographers are so passionate about this because Video gets a lot of poor reception oftentimes. It’s gotten better. But I agree videos with this perspective can be so damaging to potential couples interested in video, who become influenced from a bias photo perspective on Video and decide not to do it and then regret it later. Such a disservice to couples. Because Video is a long term investment, it’s not for couples today but 20,30 years when the grey hairs come out, kids are grown, parents are gone, these moments on Video will be ALL THATS LEFT. What I found works really well as a videographer is if I get the vibe that the photographer is assertive, is to allow the photographer to get his posed shots as well as candid shots is once the photographer has posed/directed the couple and before the photographer starts snapping away, I would say “after you are done with this shot, can you also get the couple to do this (like whisper a joke in their ear, or get the couple to look at each other and tell them how good they look), so I let the photographer be the one directing but I also ensure he includes a shot that I want for myself, and during this short 15 second duration, I would take 2 or 3 shots to cover different angles to avoid having to say “let do this again”

So I’ve worked with both photographers and videographers. And you know what? I never had this entitlement that one is superior than the other. I always consulted with the other person(s) I’m working with to get a run down of what they needed and how they wanted to work together. Ultimately it’s the bride and groom’s decision who is the lead role anyways-so for him to say photography trumps all, isn’t always the case.

You are so spot on. My wife and I are a photo and video team. We have worked very hard to find a flow that allows for photo and video to work well together and achieve beautiful results on both sides. I act as the main director (doing video) and therefore we get lots of motion and activity with the couple, plus beautiful soft intimate moments. For photo our couples say they love the naturalness and joy they see in their images vs being still and stagnant. That is the biggest problem with most photographers is they don’t know how to make couples look natural and they are very stiff. I have a ballroom background of 9 years full time and also 25 years in the arts. So i have no problems getting couples to look great standing or moving, whilst looking natural. If this photographers couples were as natural and happy as he says they are when he’s in charge, the videographers wouldn’t need to ask for anything because the couple would not be stiff. However if he as I suspect is not giving the vibe to the couple that he wants from them, they are most likely not as natural as he claims. Also having done both photo and video for years, I know that photographers definitely need to get off their high horse and learn what videographers need.

I've done many weddings. Part of our process is to call or email the vendors we'll be working closely with in advance to go over expectations and needs. Guess how many photographers have reached out in advance of a gig? 0 Not even once. Photographers still think that it's "their gig" but they don't want the responsibility of the leadership that comes with that ownership. We recently started offering Photography, for one primary reason - Pre-Production Meeting. Every couple should demand this of their creative team vendors. If not, you are rolling the dice.

Great response video with a ton of perspective and generosity on your end. You could have justifiably destroyed him for some honestly ignorant takes, but you chose the high road. Here are my big takeaways as someone who has been working high-end weddings for 2 decades: - His opinions reveal the market / level of weddings he works. I think his perspective is common and maybe even slightly justifiable (though still not very self-aware) for photographers in the mid-level market. I think that could be said for almost any vendor who is working those weddings too though. We hear it often from videographers who have to deal with DJ's who just picked all their gear up at a radioshack that week. In that light, I do think photographers often actually ARE priority for those couples...sometimes even functioning as a defacto planner. Once you get into higher end weddings and the luxury market though, these realities are non-existent. Every vendor is top tier and high priority, and should be treated respectfully as such. - His comparison of wedding videographer to a BTS photographer on a narrative film set is fundamentally a bad faith position. Those are two creatives hired to capture different objectives. One is capturing the scene, and one is capturing behind the scenes. For a wedding, both pros are hired to capture the scene in our own context. An honest comparison of situations would be a commercial photographer and a commercial filmmaker both being hired by a brand to shoot a campaign. We do this often, and it requires transparent communication and even compromise for both parties to be able to achieve their objectives, but neither takes priority over the other. The client needs both. A talented professional understands this and knows how to achieve their goal and also support the other professionals in their needs - He spoke a few times about how difficult it would be to show up to a corporate job, and try to do it while having several other individuals interject their opinions or try to do part of your job or do it differently. This is VERY LITERALLY what he's suggesting a photographer should be able to do to a videographer. - It might surprise him to learn, around 30-40% of our clients hire us first. Often even before their planner or before securing a date / venue. We get countless inquiries where we are literally their first message they send out. We've even had a handful of couples over the years who didn't plan to hire a photographer, because they've literally heard horror stories (probably from content exactly like his) about how complicated it is, but they valued video the most. We encouraged every single one of those clients to hire one because they would be missing out on a craft and perspective that we think is just as valuable as what we do. So for his stance to be honestly positioned, that would mean that in those cases of weddings, he would need to defer to the videographer. Is he ready to do so? Or is he simply assuming he is always priority? The only way for this concept to be remotely logical and good-faith, would be if he polled every couple to find out their priority, and responded accordingly to his role. - At the end of the day, photographers with this perspective are going to struggle to break into luxury markets, and for good reason. I'm sure he meant well with his content... but it was misguided or ignorant at best. I hope he can have some honest conversations to gain a bit of perspective moving forward. Keep up the great content! - Aaron

This is SO good! I appreciate your insight and wisdom here. This dialogue needs to happen more and I honestly took this video down at first at the photographers request but I feel like we all need this. Appreciate you taking the time to watch and provide this incredible transcript!
@AaronTharpeАй бұрын
Absolutely. What’s ironic is, we get a massive number of our referrals from photographers because what we do makes their product and their client’s experience so much better, so we make their jobs easier. By deciding we are priority, we would be doing our clients and ourselves a massive disservice. That is a perspective our dear OP needs to experience first hand, but likely won’t with this mentality.

Love this take! I’ve luckily never worked with a photographer like this but at the end of the day, the couple hired BOTH of you. In other words, he’s invalidating the couple and doing more harm than good. We also like to ask our couples WHY they want video. Many simply want a recap of the day because they heard they will regret it if they don’t. Others want to share this with their kids and re-live it in their old age. The latter is my ideal client because they usually hire a photographer that is a bit more story driven. Overall, the couples’ response to that question and the style of the photographer tell me a lot about the kind of day I’m going to have. Documentary/Artistic photographers that aren’t obsessed with ending up in Vogue are usually using poses that involve movement and make both of our lives easier.

A great take on a video with a poor take. Nice work at voicing my exact feelings of this video, and shedding light on the videographers perspective. It's funny how I actually worked with a photographer the weekend before I saw Luke's video, who had the same attitude. Probably the most notable moment being, after she had run them thru a narrow tunnel twice, she huffs about "OOHHH, gotta do it again for video" in a snarky voice. Which was the first suggestion or request I had in our bridal party session. I find it sad that some have this attitude. I'm thankful i often get hired as an associate in a lot of photo + video packages where we are with one company, representating and working together. If I had to work with photographers with Luke's attitude regularly, I would probably work in a different industry.

I think the underlying issue is that wedding photography attracts people who enjoy working independently and they often have big egos on top of that. Most of the photographers I've worked with are not used to cooperating or collaborating with another vendor and a lot of them just don't want to deal with it, leading to them being dismissive of your needs or just just having no spatial awareness in the heat of the moment. I've tried a lot of things to mitigate this. Proactive and and persistent communication can work wonders, but only if the Photographer is willing to listen to you and work around your needs. In the past I even started a company with a photographer so that we could offer combined packages and hopefully avoid conflict between the photographer and videographer by working together, but even then we had issues. Most photographers have these "spring into action" moments where they zero in on what they want and completely forget about what is going on around them, which I can understand but they also don't realize that my video camera is not always as mobile as they are and I can't just shoot around them if they decide to plant themselves in front of my tripod. I also very frequently feel as if photographers look down on the work I do and view it as not as important, or possibly even a threat to them. I have started to lose hope that this conflict can ever be truly resolved. I'm at the point where I don't think I want to shoot weddings anymore unless I can find a way to shoot both photo and video myself to just completely sidestep these issues. With 6k and 8k cameras becoming more and more common and affordable, it is feasible to shoot high resolution video at a high framerate and just grab stills from it for the photography. This would completely eliminate this issue, and probably result in a better overall product since the photographer and videographer wouldn't have to share territory and time to get what they need. So the moral of the story as I see it is that photographers need to learn to work with us or we may just find a way to cut them out of the equation.
@WaywardNorthАй бұрын

Even if the couple hires a photographer and a videographer with different styles, both have to respect each others space and work together during the day. Communication between teams is key, and giving room for the other to work is really important. The client will expect you both to deliver what they hired you for, not for you to piggyback on the photographer or vice versa. If you have little time for the couples session, together you should find a strategy to get trough it the best way possible, so everybody wins. Honestly even if this guy has had bad experiences with some videographers, it's no excuse. He sounds like a primadonna that thinks the wedding day revolves around him. Great video! I have done both wedding photo and wedding video full-time for 5 years. Most of the weddings I do are hybrid where I am doing both photo and video. But there are lots of weddings where I'm only doing photo or only doing video. So I feel I have expereince in dealing with both sides of the fence here. When I'm at a wedding doing photography, I make a point to communicate with the videographer BEFORE the wedding to make sure both of our expectations are met. This guy's attitude towards videographers sucks! Definitely a superiority complex going on here. I will say that in my experience of doing both, doing wedding photography has a lot more involved in the aspect of almost being a wedding coordinator as well. The couple often looks to us as the one who actually IS directing everything. However, I always make sure I am giving the videographer plenty of oppurtunity to direct and get the shots they want to get. When I pose couples for photo, I am doing a lot of poses with motion because I know it's needed for video. But it also looks great for photo too! Every videographer I have worked with has expressed their graditiude to me at the end of the night for constantly making sure they're getting what they need. I always tell them we are a team and the couple and their expereince with BOTH of us is the most important!! This guy needs to relax.

LOL Yeah, this guy sounds like a clown, is a complete unknown to the industry and obviously thinks he's a legend in his own mind. I run into unprofessional, insecure photographers here and there, but there's plenty of professional and confident ones that understand the concept of teamwork. At the end of the day, if you can't figure out how to overcome obstacles on a wedding day, good luck having any type of success in the highend luxury market.
@unashamedfilmsАй бұрын
Who’s he? 🤷🏽♂️ He’s known where? That decade seems like it hasn’t taught him anything. We promote teamwork even more due to our reliance on a proper and organized workflow. Picked first? With such an emotional way of looking at things, there’s no shred of emotional maturity just on the way he’s addressing his viewers. He probably has had a lot of bad experiences and who knows why, but that attitude? Guaranteed is exhibit number 1 on the issues list. 😂

Ray, the perception out there is still that photography is preeminent and that it takes priority on all shots. It's becoming incredibly frustrating when wedding moments that are motion and audio-based (entrances, dances, toasts) are being interrupted by photographers who think they have the right of way at all times. The hubris has reached all-time levels. As have the prices for run-of-the-mill photographers. Photogs showing up ill-equipped with one body and a 35mm and planting themselves in the middle of the aisle. Something has to give. I'm speaking as someone in the mid-range market. I have no clue what goes on in the luxury market.

The way I cackled out loud when you said "bring a little videographer" 😂 But in all seriousness, this is a great and very respectful take while still being real, Jaired. We've all had this experience and can all serve our couples better by checking our egos at the door. We once worked a wedding with a photographer who brought two additional photographers and an assistant. It did nothing to impact our working relationship because at the end of the day, the photographer was a team player and understood our value the way we understood his. I truly believe there are more team players out there than there are non-team players and we'd all do well to remember we're there to do the same thing.
@WaywardNorthАй бұрын
Hahaha I got a little spirited the more I watched. I tried to keep it as respectful and honest as possible. 6:06 I've been in BOTH scenarios & you're absolutely correct, it depends on the COUPLE. & it's not inherently true that couples book one service over the other in "priority" -- sometimes, couples who value video will pick the photog first bc they're taking more time to find the "right/perfect" video team, vice versa. "Getting booked first" doesnt/shouldn't automatically make you the Top/#1 Priority of the day. I'm very grateful that as I've stepped into the Wedding/Event space -- this is my first official year -- I've 2nd & Priority shot w/an amazing Production team. As well as my own bookings. Thus far, it's been 100% collaborative between Video & Photo teams...I didn't realize that seems to be the exception, not the norm 🙃. I'm subbed to Luke. I didn't watch this video of his bc I saw it directed at Videographers, so it wasn't relevant to me 😅. But when KZbin recommended this video to me & I saw the title, I knew immediately you were addressing his video lol I will say, most times (photography related) he has great takes & insight...this unfortunately, wasn't one. I found it to be disrespectful/hypocritical. Such a shame. But I'm glad it lead me to your video/channel, I want to know more from Videographer POV.

This was hard to watch. We should never forget that the Clients are the most important people on the Wedding Day that have Expectations of all the Services they took their hard earned money and paid for based on what they previewed while meeting with each vendor and selected. This is to the entire Industry, No one Vendor should assume they are priority for the Client. The sad thing is that, the Client getting ANYTHING less than what they deserve on their once in a lifetime Event for their multiple paid services that they “can’t recreate”…. was destroyed unnecessarily and even with malice. Again This is not directed at any one person, but impolitely walking in front of each other’s cameras(shots) or not sharing concern for the Big Picture of their important day in the multiple formats they will want to view in reliving their Day….destroying the Clients future memories of the day in photo or video clearly makes you not only a horrible Business person but even more so a horrible human being that is willingly destroying a Client desired end Product. We ALL need to do better and never forget this is a once in a lifetime events for the Couple, their parents and closest family and friends - selfishness should be no where near this Wedding Day.

I see where both of them are coming from. A big reason I book as much as I do now a days 3 years in which is typically 30-50 weddings a year generating up to 150K in revenue, is I sell my couples on not making their day into a film production. I like a very very small footprint and not engaging too much with the couple for specific stylized shots. I find a lot of middle class clients in the 2-6K range really look for that, but I'm sure that preference exists in all markets. There's no point to argue about this though, we all sell our own experiences and we were hired for a reason......you know?
@WaywardNorthАй бұрын
Totally understand your point of view and appreciate it! I think the biggest reason this video was so alarming is not only the photographers control obsession but the decade long journey he has endured in the industry and his mindset fails to recognize why collaboration is so much better. I love being a fly on the wall as well but if the photographers style is vastly different and the couple is expecting my unique product. How will I provide what my client expects if I'm at the mercy of a photographers creative direction? if my voice is silenced, how does that benefit the couple and the video they paid for? I think every wedding professional should see the value in each other, recognize that we are all assets to the success of this day and the experience that will always be remembered by the couple.
@trishhorton3419Ай бұрын
Thanks for this. I could feel the heat coming off you, but you kept an articulate counter argument nonetheless on this video. I'm in the same city as this creator. I feel like this was a not too well thought out rant on videographers and click-bait. I think both videography and photography and are a saturated market (with varied experience levels) in a lot of cities, and there is a fighting for space mentality that surfaces with so much ego. It was apparent that he feels the experience he brings to the couple outweighs everyone else, and somehow it dictates the agenda. Is it impossible to think that a couple may have varying tastes in genres for their photography and videography? As a photographer I spend a decent amount of time watching videographer content. It helps me incorporate more movement. If I have not met the videographer exchanged an email or a quick call my quick first conversation is what is your working style? let me know if I'm in your way (I'm human and get hyper-focused) and I try to make sure they are getting what they need. The optimist in me says we all have something to bring to the table.
@WaywardNorthАй бұрын

Luckily my wife and I are a photo video team so I get to work with her at most weddings. But in my experience with other photographers, they turn the wedding into more of a production. Wanting to pose and “fake” everything for the photos. Whereas good videographers really just want to allow the couple to enjoy real authentic moments because that’s what makes a good film. Maybe this photographer should “know their priority” and capture the wedding day in an authentic way, instead of stressing about a fellow vendor trying to do their job 😂
