WCW Clash of the Champions XXXIV took place on 1.21.1997 live from the Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee. Happening 1 day after an episode of Nitro and 5 days before nWo Souled Out 97, this Clash show felt a little sandwiched between two shows that maybe had more importance in terms of WCW's growth but still, a few matches took place that are worth checking out.
Clash of the Champions 34 was headlined by Lex Luger vs Scott Hall. Chris Benoit vs The Taskmaster also took place (a falls count anywhere match that continued the Sullivan / Benoit / Woman rivalry) and Dean Malenko also tried to get his Cruiserweight Title back in a match against Ultimo Dragon. This video (a continuation in the Wrestling Bios "Reliving The War" series) looks at the entire 34th WCW Clash of the Champions special while breaking down each match that took place.
00:00 - Intro
01:35 - Dean Malenko vs Ultimo Dragon
06:49 - Scotty Riggs vs Mike Enos
09:20 - Trios Cruiserweight Match
11:50 - Harlem Heat vs Gomez & Renegade
13:16 - Masahiro Chono vs Alex Wright
15:11 - Scott Norton vs Eddie Guerrero
18:16 - Giant Promo
19:28 - The Taskmaster vs Chris Benoit
21:40 - Amazing French Canadians vs The Steiners
23:29 - Scott Hall vs Lex Luger
27:29 - Final Thoughts

Yeah, as a former Bear, the reaction Mongo received that night doesn't surprise me. Take it from a Chicagoan, the blood feud between Bears and Packers fans runs *DEEP* to this very day. I may be in the minority on this, but I actually enjoyed these backstage brawls between Benoit and Sullivan. I always found them entertaining and fitting for such a heated rivalry. As a 12 year old back then, Benoit and Sullivan brawls were just so awesome. I always looked forward to their matches, even though I didn't understand why it was so intense. I loved all the commentary about the crowd because I was part of it. I went to plenty of shows in Milwaukee back in the 90s and can tell you that while the WWF drew the more "mainstream" crowds, WCW shows brought out a combination of the diehards, the tape traders, the dirt sheet readers, and the old schoolers that stuck around after the AWA days. It made for a much rowdier atmosphere than you'd find at WWF shows even in the same building (KOTR 1996 was in this building just a few months earlier). In fact, this was more or less the same people who showed up for the ECW shows when they started running Milwaukee.

Totally great, under-the-radar moment of this show: when Hall, Nash and Syxx were coming out for the main event, Schiavone took time to acknowledge the great fans and singled out Brian Hildebrand, wishing him a happy 35th birthday. Because that day was the 35th birthday of Mark Curtis, real name Brian Hildebrand.

WCW didn’t know WTF they were doing! Signing Hall & Nash could’ve been a steal. They basically got paid slot of money to party LOL All they did was go out in the ring wasted and cut a promo for 5min. I can’t even remember one match from them... Also signing “The Best there is the best there was and the best their ever will be...” should’ve been legendary. But he had no story line and was basically just a loner on the show. He was the best talent and already had a fan base, he should’ve been an easy push. But they flushed it all down the toilet. They should have never let Eric Bischof have control of the money and signings he buried them!

Loved Chris Benoit's WCW theme. Das Wunderkind vs Masahiro Chono's nWo shirt was my favorite moment of this episode of Nitro. The shirt won that war, refusing to do the j.o.b.

Serious question- I never watched WCW as I'm from Ireland and I didn't have the channel it was on. I played the games on the Nintendo and had friends who watched it so I knew most of the wrestlers, especially the big stars. What happened to Lex Luger after WCW collapsed? Was he out of wrestling before it even collapsed? He seemed like a huge star. I know most of the top guys in WCW didn't come to WWF/E during that botched Invasion angle but most of them came later. Where did Luger go?

He sadly never got picked up by WWE. Then his life went down from there. He had a spinal stroke and has been in a wheelchair since 2006. He is an amazing person. He’s completely positive about his life and career. Lex should be in the hall of fame.
