My only problem with these products is that they jack up the price for the privilege of telling you "PlayStation 4" on the box. 2TB "gaming" drive = $80 VS 2TB "regular" drive = $70 4TB "gaming" drive = $110 VS 4TB "regular" drive = $100 (depending on color, some go up to and even over $110) ...Okay, so those markups aren't as bad as I've seen from other companies (hi, Seagate). I'd actually consider $10 a fair tradeoff for not having to spend time researching this stuff. You win this time, WD.

The WD drive for playstation is a WD black, which is a fair chunk more than a WD blue which your prices reflect. So, WD is just advertising it differently, not milking the ignorant (too much).

I ended up using my old 500 GB Sata drive from an old computer with the use of a casing adapter USB 3.0

Got sick of incrementally upgrading my internal PS4 drive every time I ran out of room so ended up just buying the WD 8TB external drive a while back and it's great not having to worry about storage for the rest of the console life. and If anyone can fit 50 PS4 games on this 2TB drive then you're clearly missing out cause you'd have to be playing mobile phone like games on a PS4, c'mon!

Well not everyone has money you at least got to know that. I have a 1 terabyte PS4 slim and I never upgraded the storage. Probably will soon though.

Go the exact drive as a Christmas present. Works like a charm. I was expecting slower loading times but it’s pretty smooth.

I was wondering why these existed when every drive works, thought it might actually be faster in Canada these are $20-30 more. Thanks for an actual honest and thought out review

I don't have the best internet where I live and I wanted a ~500 gb SSD so I use an external drive to back up the games I don't want taking up my SSD space. As id rather not redownload everything later.

First thing i do with a new ps4 system is upgrade the drive to at least a hybrid drive but good to see that the WD drive is at least halfway decent.
@PAPO19905 жыл бұрын
The difference hybrid drives make is almost negligible. Simply upgrading to a larger, faster drive will do a lot more than going to a hybrid. Or depending on how much space you need SSD's are starting to become somewhat reasonable in price now.

Very informative video! my only question is how this compares to SSD's?

I saw 8 second difference in Spiderman and a 5 second improvement in the God of War load times. Not bad at all considering external drives are usually a little slower due to USB connectivity (at least from what I've experienced).

I got a PS4 for Xmas and bought one of these straight away from Ebuyer at a good price. I've been using it now for the last couple months and had no problems with it, well worth it. I think it's labelled PS4 because it's pre formatted for that device? Could be wrong 😀
@markus96415 жыл бұрын
Its not pre formatted, the Sony licensing simply means its guaranteed to work on the ps4 console(which all externals actually do) but it certainly drives traffic for people who are uncertain about what hard drives even are and just want to install more games.

I'd rather go with the WD Game Drive because it loads faster, while the PS4 Internal Drive takes a long time to load.

I knew about hard drive compatibility and actually bought it to work with my computer. Wanna know why? The colors man! It looks nice!

Fun fact: Internally, the PS4 uses a SATA -> USB converter, just like these external drives do.

Where did you get this info. I find that hard to believe.

It uses Sata2 internally.

mum get me one of those ps4 drives. *MUM* buys right drive *legend* aslong as the dont increase the price. nice looking drive though the drive in my ps4 is a hgst which is a really good drive, makes me wonder what they did to get it slow. compare it to an ssd ps4 though that would be interesting
@alexatkin5 жыл бұрын
I believe the PS4 Pro still uses USB 3.0 to SATA for its internal interface, which explains why the difference is minimal even with the WD being a faster drive. I think loading on consoles, like everything else about them, is held back largely by the CPU. I'm still kinda bewildered that upgrading the CPU on my PC caused load times from HDD to suddenly be almost as fast as from SSD. Logic would suggest that shouldn't happen as if it was CPU bound the SSD loading should have been just as slow before the upgrade. :/
@SteelSkin6675 жыл бұрын
It's quite unlikely that the PS4 Pro uses an USB to SATA interface internally, but ultimately it wouldn't matter. The thing is, a mechanical hard drive will never get bottlenecked by an USB 3.0 interface, so it all boils down to how fast the drive itself is.

But!! the loading time Difference is insignificant, not really a "time saver" imo.
@BluntyTV5 жыл бұрын
Who are you quoting? I never said anything like it being a “time saver”, the POINT of the comparison is; you’re not getting worse performance by using the external drive. There’s no down side there.
