I love how y'all see the juxtaposition between Kylo struggling with the light and Rey struggling with the dark. You also got how the folly of the jedi in a way was their perfectionism. Sometimes you have to make the choice to follow the light because we all have darkness within us. It doesn't just happen. People expect Luke to be some golden hero who never failed after episode 6, but that's just not how us humans work. You can still ultimately make the choice to to the right thing, and become a hero, in the end, despite your failures. 💖

I agree with a lot of people that Luke's history with Ben/the flashback could have been at least presented better. I'm not against the idea of what happened, but if they had done more showing and less telling about how disillusioned Luke had already become and what terrible stuff he saw that Ben was willing to do I feel like it would have gone over better and wouldn't have read to people as "Luke just tried to kill him". Despite that, we literally got the best Luke moment at the end of the movie when he uses the Force for knowledge and defense and never for attack, becoming in my opinion the most powerful and most good Jedi there has ever been. Luke had to learn of the Order's failures in the Prequels, become disillusioned and question them in order to come out stronger on the other side. His hope and belief in Jedi teachings had to be challenged to prove it was real and not just born out of ignorance. That's how I view it, anyway. I still get chills watching Luke walk out onto the salt flats to face down the walkers.

A lot of people say that in the TLJ Luke is out of character compared to the originals. Shall we play a game of Spot the Differences? Scene A, throne room ROTJ. 1. Luke goes to "confront" his father because he sees light in him and wants to help. 2. At some point he realises Vader poses an immediate threat to someone he loves. (If you will not turn to the Dark Side... then perhaps she [Leia] will!). 3. Luke goes on attack mode and ignites his saber. Scene B, Ben's hut TLJ. 1. Luke goes to "confront" his nephew/padawan because he sees darkness in him and wants to help. 2. At some point he realises Ben poses an immediate threat to someone he loves. (He would bring destruction and pain and death, and the end of everything I love because of what he will become). 3. Luke goes on attack mode and ignites his saber. Can you spot the differences in Luke? I'll go first. Difference No1: In the throne room Luke lets his rage take over and attacks Vader until he cuts his hand off. Then and only then he realises what he's doing and stops himself. In Ben's hut he doesn't attack. He stops himself BEFORE striking Ben. Difference No2: ...I can't find another one.

The things that bother a lot of star wars fans about this film never bothered me. Luke having Trauma over failing Kylo Ren I really like, so Luke gets a redemption arc in this film. The things that I find annoying about this film are the side adventure to the Casino planet, which mostly just messes up the pacing of the story.
@jesussantos738010 сағат бұрын
The problem with Luke's trauma over failing Kylo is that it makes no sense for him to fail him. He spends all of ROTJ arguing with everyone that Vader has good in his heart, and Vader has done much, much worse than Kylo. And in the end, he's right. Vader is good at heart. So...why would he forget all that with his best friend's son? His sister's son? When he argues with Ben and Yoda for Vader's life, he sacrifices himself and refuses to strike his father down in front of the Emperor. I'm not saying this could never happen, but it just comes out of nowhere, which is why most people say this movie assassinated Luke's character...because it objectively did. He has a redemption arc that's semi-decent, but he never needed redemption to begin with because his character in the previous films would never do something like this.
