Had to break out my bottle of Bulleit 12yr Rye when I saw this video. It opened up and got sweeter and spicier at the same time since I cracked it a few months ago. Such a great available rye! On a side note, I have a number of "special" bottles I have been saving for a "special" occasion. It's time to make special occasions with family and friends by breaking these out! It would be a tragedy to miss an opportunity to share experiences with the ones you care about by hoarding bottles and waiting for the right time. Enjoy life and cheers everyone!

After watching Neat, and seeing friends save bottles for certain occasions only to not come around, my perspective has changed to your message. The memories are more important than the bottle. People spend years making products into whiskey to be enjoyed, not collected. Open it, enjoy it, share it, create those Tuesday night memories. Tomorrow is never guaranteed.

Just watched this and your story of Freddie is so real. I am a bit of a beginner in serious whiskey I’ve watched you guys for years though. I have to say when I buy even just an expensive whiskey I don’t drink it alone I always saved it to drink with friends and family. I bought a Lagavulin 16 once and I nursed it for nearly a year bought it a christmas and finished it in a Nov whiskey bonfire with a couple of buddies. I think I had one small pour of it on my own in that year. I didn’t even open it till I could get together with a friend. In the movie, “water of life” several times it comes up that whiskey is best among friends and good conversation, this I believe. Thanks for that reminder

You made me cry today! I am periodically reminded that if I don't open my good bottles and share with my friends NOW, someone in my family will either pour it out or give it away when I'm gone. I'm hosting my whiskey-friend group for a tasting this weekend. Cheers!

I've not had the 12, but was totally underwhelmed by the standard bottle...right up until I had a glass on ice at a pub. The master distiller is bang on, in my humble opinion.

"we are the fragile part of this equation, there will always be more whiskey" just made me crack open a bottle of lagavulin 16 that i've been saving (not that precious to some people, but expensive enough for me to save for a while)

My favorite rye. I also use 1 ice cube with it and I find it makes it much more of a full experience when drinking it. I really like the fragile comment because it is so true. I am at that age to where I am starting to lose friends to death and to remember we do not live forever and we should share with those we love or care about is much more important to me than it was 15yrs ago.

Great video! I deeply relate to this. As a new-ish whisky collector, I have a really hard time opening my rarer bottles. I always try to finish the ''lesser'' bottles and keep the better ones for ''the perfect day''. Thing is, when with friends especially, it will always be the perfect day. You are absolutely correct, there will always been more whisky.

Wow i myself find at times i treat whisky as to precious i collect whisky rear odd bottles and often drink the “cheaper” ones but this video just made me think back of why i started collecting and enjoying whiskies the search for those odd bottles and the moments spent with friend family and loved ones enjoying that odd out of place rear bottle thanks for the reminder and i would love to come vist you guys for a week or two all the way for South Africa keep it up hope for an invite 😅😅👊🏻

I just picked up my first "expensive" to me bottle of whiskey last week. This has encouraged me to share it with my dad and not be too stingy with it. I'll still keep it "hidden away" so we can enjoy it together (versus the spirits out on display that we all access independently). No one else in my family really likes whiskey like I do; my dad will drink it with me, but he's a sucker for cheap rum. Honestly, sometimes I don't think he has tastebuds. LOL I have a pretty tantalus with two crystal bottles, "Rye" and "Scotch." I keep Bulleit Rye in one; still deciding on the Scotch. I haven't really delved into the world of Scotch, yet. Don't judge, but it currently has Fireball in it. (blech) My liquor cabinet caters to many tastes.

Dad's Hat will always be my "classic rye". I recently discovered that my local chain isn't carrying it anymore. I was able to track down 3 bottles on clearance.
@TimHoekstra2 ай бұрын
Had the exact same realisation earlier in the year. Got many things closed labelled 'too precious'. They'll get opened soon, halfway there. You might never taste them otherwise. There will always be new 'rare' bottles.

Awesome prospective, the people are the precious part. Like a grand celebration that cost a lot of money, but you remember the people what what they mean to you more than what was served.

also remember that once you open the bottle, the flavor is going start to change. letting it have time to breathe is fine, but if you allow too much time the flavor isnt going to be as intended any longer.

I do the same with cigars, sometimes thinking I must save the "special" one for "special" times. I try to remind myself these things are meant to be enjoyed, not stared at waiting for "later." "Just drink the whiskey." That's it right there.

Early on I noticed this "keep it for later" problem I've had my entire life. The feeling of wanting to save it since I may never get more, and forgetting that whiskey isn't meant to be kept. It is meant to be drunk. If I notice that feeling creeping in, I know that I absolutely need to share it with others. I know those who view my channel will appreciate such things, and I feel all the better for giving them a chance to try it. 🖖😎🥃

You whiskey folk sure make me feel gutter. All these descriptors of notes and characters is just more than I can relate to. Mind you I'm a mixer. By that I mean I just drink most things with coke. I pour a drink, I take a slug and I like it or I don't. Some are really good such as Bullit and some good and occasionally some are gasoline. There's nothing centered or earthy, nothing palate filling or spreading. Is there hope for me or am I just useless. I always taste the spirit alone but just don't get it. Should I take a course? Or read a book? Help!
