Seed and Sparrow Homestead

14 күн бұрын

Hey Friend, Join us on our 1/4 acre Homestead as we make some good food from scratch, work alongside some good friends and gain tons of space for our little homestead. We are taking down some trees and we are so excited to put this new space to good use!
Thanks for hanging out!

Buttermilk ranch:1/2 C Mayo

1/2 C Buttermilk
3 tsp fresh lemon juice
1/4 tsp worcestershire
1 tbsp parsley
1/2 tsp dill weed
1/2 tsp chives
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/4 tsp salt
pinch of pepper
Beef bbq:
1 pound ground beef
6 ounces tomato sauce
½ cup ketchup
3 Tbsp coconut sugar, or brown sugar
1.5 tablespoon mustard
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
3 tablespoons ACV
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon onion powder
Add more seasoning to taste
Venison beer chili:
2 lbs venison
1 can kidney beans
1 can pinto beans
1 12 oz can beer
1.5 cups beef broth
6 oz tomato sauce
1 can diced tomatoes
2 cups total, diced onion/celery/peppers/garlic
1/4 cup tomato paste
2 tbsp chili powder
2 tbsp paprika
1 tablespoon cumin
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1/8 cup brown sugar
1 4 oz jar of candied jalapenos
Salt and pepper to taste
Sweet dough:
1 1/4 cups whole milk
2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
1 tsp granulated white sugar
4 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp salt
2 tbsp granulated white sugar
2 eggs
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
1/2 tbsp vanilla
To start, bloom your yeast. Mix your active dry yeast, sugar, and warm milk together and let sit for 10 minutes.
Next, in a large bowl of a stand mixer with a whisk attachment, mix flour, salt and sugar together.
To the dry ingredients add the whisked eggs, vanilla and softened butter and mix.
Add in the yeast mixture and mix until everything is blended. Switch to a dough hook and knead on medium speed for 7-10 minutes until the dough pulls away from the edges of the bowl, forms a ball and springs back when pressed.
Form the dough into a ball. Place the dough in a large, greased bowl. Cover with plastic wrap or a kitchen towel and place in a warm place to rise, , for 1- 1 ½ hours, or until the dough doubles in size.
Grease a 9x13" casserole dish and set aside. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Once the dough has had a chance to rise, remove it from the bowl, punch the dough to release the air, and roll it out on a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough into about an 18 x 12 inch rectangle. It should be about ¼ inch thick.
Next, spoon the prepared filling over the dough and spread it evenly.
Roll up the dough tightly into a long log shape starting from the short side. Cut of a bit off the ends to make the log even. Cut 12 rolls about 1 ½ inches wide using unflavored floss
Place the rolls in a greased 9x13" casserole dish and pour room temperature heavy cream in between each roll. Cover them with plastic wrap and let them proof in a warm spot for about an hour, or until they have doubled in size.
Once the rolls have proofed, bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a light golden color.
Once rolls have cooled, cover with icing. Enjoy!

I'm happy for you and glad you are not mourning the loss of the privacy the trees previously offered. Is the new space big enough for a high tunnel??? That would check several boxes... growing space, check... almost year round growing, check... offer some privacy from neighbors, check. A fence would still be nice, but if a tunnel fits (even a caterpillar tunnel) I'd be tempted to reach out to Grower's Solution or another big tunnel manufacturer for a possible sponsorship! 😉

Oh yea, I get soooo excited still when I go collect the eggs from the girls, I’ve only just started my homesteading journey, it’s been a slow slow start… financially and also with landscaping issues,,, we only have one and a half acre and part of that is a ravine, so I have to utilize all the space at the sides of the house and the front, especially with the chickens out there, but we just got the front fenced in and I would absolutely love to put some fruit trees in, I think it would be awesome to do some blueberry bushes and raspberries and strawberries along the corner in the back and along some of the side that y’all will be fencing, , I can totally relate to your excitement with having that extra space and also with the possibilities of what you’ll be planting… from just cutting a few trees you got an awesome view of the sunset, extra space for the kids and more room to increase your garden!!! I would be baking too girl, congratulations it looks beautiful and we’re excited for y’all!! we live in Kentucky and always enjoy watching other peoples homesteading journeys 😊have a blessed day

You were talking about the sound of your Kitchen Aid. Have you changed the grease in it since you've owned it? I learned that the grease should be changed every 10 years or so, depending upon usage. The heavier the usage, especially if you use it to knead, the more often the grease should be changed. Living Traditions Homestead has a great step-by-step video on how to change the grease. When I removed the top of my mixer, I realized how badly the grease needed changing because it was partially broken down. Now my mixer is much more quiet.

One delicious way to use up an excess of eggs is Maria Emerich’s boiled egg protein pudding. The base recipe is: 10 large eggs, boiled & peeled 14 ounces milk 1/2 cup sweetener Pinch of salt Flavor/s of choice You just blend it all until smooth, and then refrigerate. It’s very forgiving- I’ve never had any of my flavor experiments not turn out pudding like. It doesn’t taste eggy, and no one would know if you didn’t tell them. It also works great as an ice cream in my Ninja Creami. ETA: I forgot to include that you can make it with unseasoned scrambled eggs if you don’t feel like making and peeling boiled eggs. =)

What a blessing to have people that are willing to help you. They sure accomplished a lot! And you my friend took care of them so beautifully with all the delicious goodness you made! What a transformation in removing those trees. I am confident that I have never seen arborvitae that large before. 😮 uncovering that space is like unwrapping a gift. As a Grammy, my considerations for use of a space no longer includes providing for the needs of children (although we do have littles that are here often, they just don’t live here) so my thoughts were with all the sun that will be available, I went right to more growing space! Seems you have room to be creative in how it’s used including the children, a place to relax and for something like growing grapes or more fruit trees etc. What an exciting time it will be putting this space to use! I have to say, as soon as you showed the chicken towel I googled the nursery to see if it was available online. I love it! Have a wonderful weekend Kelsey. God Bless you friend, thanks for sharing with all of us.

A blessing is right! They made it happen! I’m convinced we had the largest arborvitae known to mankind lol. Definitely not the norm. I love how you put that, removing them was like opening a gift! That is exactly how it felt and I’m so excited to put that gift to use. I’ll definitely be growing something there(how could I not lol) but I’m thinking a seating area and play space for the kids too. I also had the thought of dairy goats but that may take some convincing to get Matt on board 😂 Thanks so much friend! Blessings ❤️

The littles are growing fast. So with your new found space maybe a jungle gym, ninja warrior style gym, bike shed. Some other ideas are a fruit orchard, berries, more chickens, few more bunnies for more fertilizer, compost bins, storage shed, fire pit, outdoor kitchen, pizza oven/grilling station, pergola with a patio and twinkle lights to host birthdays or friends etc…, hammocks, trampoline, there’s those half she sheds that also double as a sitting room (saw it on Pinterest don’t know the proper name). That is a lot of new space you can do multiple new things. ❤❤❤
