"I wonder if all the Godzilla movies are connected." Yes and no. There are actually multiple timelines in the Godzilla franchise. The one you are currently watching is the MonsterVerse, which is a completely separate canon altogether. The original Godzilla came out in 1954, and the key to differentiating each timeline is whether or not they acknowledge the 1954 original. The first timeline was the Showa Era, from the 50s to the 70s, and each film was a sequel to the previous one in that timeline. The second timeline is the Heisei Era, from 1984-1995. The Heisei Era is perhaps the most popular timeline, but it disregards ALL films from the Showa Era except the 1954 original (by the end of the Showa Era, Godzilla had become too kid-friendly in the eyes of the people at TOHO, so they decided to reboot the franchise and bring him back to his roots as this dark, unstoppable antihero that was a living force of nature, which was a VERY smart decision on their part). The third timeline is the Millennium Era (1999-2004), and this timeline is arguably the most confusing, because nearly every film in this timeline is meant to be a direct sequel to the 1954 original that disregards all previous films that came before it. Films like Shin Godzilla (2016) and Godzilla Minus One (2023) and the Godzilla anime projects (the Godzilla Earth trilogy (2017-2019) and Godzilla: Singular Point (2021)) are all reboots that exist in their own timelines and don't acknowledge the original 1954 film at all. This Godzilla is part of the Monsterverse series of movies. The next in the series is Kong: Skull Island it's a prequel to Godzilla and its set in 1973. Then it's Godzilla: King Of The Monsters it's set 5 years after Godzilla. The fourth film is Godzilla vs Kong. Next is the tv series on Apple TV called Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. It's set in the 1950's and after the events in Godzilla. Coming the end of March is the 5th film called Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Interestingly enough Godzillas facial structure is based on Bears, Canines and Eagles. His fighting style is also based on Bears and Komodo Dragons. Hes fairly slow moving, heavy-set and phlegmatic in nature like a bear too.

The gases you see in the beginning weren’t a cloud of radiation itself, rather a burst pipe releasing radioactive wastewater. Not 100% realistic but cinematically it helped give the audience a visual representation of the danger.

The Darkness issue is actually because the home video version was fucked with the brightness. The image of Godzilla they used in the video, for example, is what the movie is _supposed_ to look like. It looked like that in the film, and on HBO Max.

Great reaction guys and I've watched these movies since I was young. Mom got me started with the godzilla black and white starring Raymond Burr, incidentally they made 2 movies, 1 in English and 1 in Japanese. It's awesome to see people are interested and this universe is so deep and has so many monsters, there's even a movie with a robot, that is a favorite movie of mine and to learn all the monsters names. 1976 Godzilla vs Megalon, you'll see Jet Jaguar the robot, Rodan and Anguirius the spiny anteater on Easter Island then Godzilla faces Megalon and Gigan, he has hooks for hands and Megalon looks like a beetle with drill hands. Filmed by Toho studio as are all early Godzilla movies. Even at 50 I got enthralled watching, then 2 of my adult nephews saw what I was viewing and sat down to finish movie. Lol they've been fans since they were little. It was their Barney/ Blues clues for them. The nephew can name every monster and studio that made monster movies, even 1st b/w king kong with stop animation.

Why they were winding down the Reactor? They didn't want another Chernobyl but in Japan. The cloud was most likely steam. Iirc, the basics of a nuclear Reactor is that they use the heat given off my radioactive materials, usually things like Uranium, to heat up water to spin a turbine. When the HokMUTO (A fan term for the Male MUTO) breached the Reactor core, there was nothing preventing the uranium from flash boiling an Olympic swimming pool of water. This steam would be insanely radioactive contaminated by radioactive materials. Yeah, in a real life scenario, you wouldn't be allowed into the quarantine zone around a Nuclear Reactor that melted down. Though, usually, going into a quarantine zone like that is usually its own punishment. The only reason people are allowed into the Chernobyl exclusion zone is because ambient Radiation levels have dropped to a point where its safe to be. For a short time. Visiting the site will only give you a dose equivalent to that of taking an airplane. (Just don't climb into any of the equipment left behind, like some idiot tictokers. Unless you want Cancer.) They do have Quarantine zones IRL. Usually around former nuclear test sites or other areas contaminated by radioactive materials (Like Rocky Flats in my Hometown. Former Nuclear bomb factory that had a number of Plutonium fires.) Some have been turned into Wildlife sanctuaries. Fukushima is another good Quarantine zone.

Like, for example, the claw they used to clean up some of the rubble is far more radioactive than the surrounding wilderness. My advice? Listen to the tour guides. Sounds like common sense, I know, but you'd be surprised how many people don't.
