I did the Montessori bed around 1 year old. I never had a crib. My baby was in a travel pack n play in my room. I convinced my husband let's do the bed on the floor. The bed does have a frame, from the bed. We put noodles on top of the frame so it does not hurt to get out of bed. I had no problem with transitioning! My baby has no problem getting in and out. They do get to know on their boundaries. We do have the door closed and she knocks when she wants someone to get her. But YES it helps to lay in bed, especially if she is sick and needs comfort. That was a benefit I used to sell to my husband. Moving monitor does helps. We love the bed on the floor and my baby does too! Oh, we do have another twin bed in the room. My mom sleeps there when she spends the night. It works out!

I wanted to mention an idea for people with carpet that I did for my floor bed is adding decking tiles (ikea runnen) underneath the mattress to avoid bed mold. I was previously using a low profile bed frame, then the bed frame without the pegs (which was so hard to do for changing the bed sheets), then this method. Floor beds are awesome and relieving for me when it comes to babies falling off the bed

Currently 30 weeks 🤰🏻 with our first girl. One of the first books I started reading during my second trimester was about Montessori during the first three years of life; I wanted to find a parenting approach that supported development during the very early stages of life that so much of their personality is formed, and Montessori fits the bill nicely. I got my hubby on board right away about the plan for a Montessori nursery without a crib... Now if only her grandmas weren’t so appalled by the idea of a bed on the floor. One got genuinely offended when I said I wanted to give her the ability to gain spatial awareness and independence in her own space, and that doesn’t happen in an elevated baby jail 😂

I’m 15 years too late to do a Montessori bed/bedroom for my twins, but they DID attend a Montessori school (1st-6th grade, aka “E1” & “E2”) so all of this makes a sense to me! It takes *effort* from parents to set up spaces in such a way that it allows for maximum independence. Children - even babies - learn best by *doing*.... and they have natural curiosity, so the whole idea is to allow that to occur, in a safe & age-appropriate environment, on their own timeline, with limited direction. You’re doing GREAT!

When we were babies we had a crib that was adjustable in height, so for the beginning it would be very high up and could be lowered later. Then as we grew to a crawling/climbing age, my dad would remove two or three of the bars from the side of the bed so we could climb out and play in the room 🙈 And a babies nursery doesn't need to be instagrammable, it needs to work for you and your family 💜

Shayla! First I wanna say how much I just LOOVE your videos. You never fail to make me smile! Second, I just want to pass along something that was shared with me---it can be wise to separate your baby's mattress from the wall by about twelve inches to prevent your baby from getting caught between the bed and the wall and suffocating. (Do with that what you want, of course. No judgement. You know your baby!) Thank you for sharing your life, especially the "non-instagrammable" parts!! 💕👏

There are really nice outlet covers that cover the entire outlet and secures the cord. BUT make sure the cord doesn't become a strangulation hazard. We ran extension cord to closet and secured it then ran camera from that up high so they couldn't pull on the cord, only like a 1ft portion of extension cord. I have active children and they're older. We also do camping pads next to the bed, works great!

I love Montessori style everything :) when I taught preschool Montessori was my lifeline. For a toddler (when we get there) we definently want a floor bed, I'm not sure if it would work for an infant in our current set up. We have two cats and I can't plan what they will do with a tiny human but if they happen to respect future human space fairly well then baby will do a floor bed sooner rather than later. Thank you for sharing!

I am pregnant and due in April. I also have seen videos you recommended. It’s just cool to find someone doing similar things as me with a similar relaxed mindset. Like, probably doing hypnobirthing and Montessori and even you having the vitamin D drops, but I’m not a super hard core “crunchy” person (which I say because I joined a crunchy momma group on FB in hopes to learn things and it was a HUGE turn off and had to leave it) I do recommend joining the Montessori FB group for ages 0-3. They provide A LOT of free resources as well as is just being an incredible community to connect with and ask questions. Official subscribed

I feel like if my sister had done this for the twins they would have played with their toys more and thier poop less. They would wake up and not make a single peep until they, the walls, the cribs, their blankets, toys, etc were all covered in poop. Then they would giggle at eachother which ofcourse would wake everyone up because yes, she used a monitor. The entire house would go from snoozing quietly to total chaos. No joke, they would soooooo quiet and then suddenly they would be laughing and everything, EVERY SINGLE THING, EVERYTHING, would be covered in poop. So then my Sissy had to get one of those ridiculously monitors that would beep suuuppperrrr loudly and vibrate at the slightest sound. (This was before video monitors.) No joke, twins are the best for the comradery and bond. Their own built in buddy system. It's the best. They would play together and it was the best. However, the downside was that unlike singletons, twins don't always wake up and fuss, cry, etc to then alert the parents. They wake up and play quietly with eachother and would cry when they got hungry and/or bored. Ooorrrr once they and everything else was covered in poop. One time Alethia, or as my husband calls her, "the red one" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 she came out first... Anyway, one time, Alethia gave Amara a mohawk using her very own poop gel to style it. Yep. That was one of the absolute worst poop masterpieces ever. When the giggles erupted my sister and myself went running into their room to find Amara with her hair in a mohawk just smiling up at us like it was totally the cutest hairdo (hair-doo...omg I just realized the pun in that. 🤣🤣) and Alethia just sitting there completely clean of her own poo except for her hands for which she used to style her twins hair. I wish I could show you these pictures because yep, I'm THAT Aunt. You know, the aunt who laughs hysterically and takes pictures while my sister is frantically cleaning them and everything up. Yep. No shame. I love those pictures. So gross but hilarious and will make excellent bribery one day. Anywaysssss....Alethia was so proud of her masterpiece and Amara thought she looked AMAZING just sitting there grinning up at us. Amara is an absolute ham. This was our first inclination that she was going to be our little girly girl model person. 🤣

My daughter used to only fall asleep in our arms and it usually took a loooong time for her to settle...as she grew older an heavier it became almost impossible to put her inside her crib without her waking up again...so we decided to give it a go and try the matress when she was 18 months old. It worked and is so much less stressful for all of us...i am determined to do the same thing with myfuture children from the beginning on! She usually stays in bed as she has a sleepsack on, but she can even walk with it! We have a gate at the stairs and lock all the rooms tha she is not supposed to go in...i encourage every parent to try and find their way of dealing with sleep issues, there is not one solution, find out what works best for you and your family!

I use a crib, took off one side then attach the crib to our bed. I did the exactly same thing: laying next to her nursing until she fell asleep, then get out. But society made me doubt myself that I was doing the wrong thing, that I shouldn’t nurse to sleep, that I shouldn’t co-sleep, and both are things I loveee to do 🥲 I wish I watched your video before stop nursing to sleep. I even hired a sleep trainer to get my baby sleep in her own crib (because that’s what they said). At the end it’s like money thrown out of the window. I ended up co-sleeping again because I couldn’t stand my baby crying and not responding to her, and yeah.. I love sleeping with her. It’s soooo good to watch videos like yours, giving me more assurance that what I am doing is in fact nothing wrong. We are moving to floor bed now because she starts crawling, can’t use our high bed anymore. But she’s still gonna sleep with her mama til whenever she wants. 💕

This is how we raise babies in Africa , we don’t do cribs and they sleep safely. I’m surprised and smile at this concept that is becoming popular in the western world . In fact I live in America 🇺🇸! Our babies in Africa barely have toys , at least they will be playing with safe household items and if you can afford store bought toys yes for that but in limited quantities just like the Montessori approach. I guess it’s good that we are realizing that not only it cut down cost on unnecessary stuff and reduce consumerism while the baby is having more social interaction but also freedom of movement (by the way, baby crawling on sand of course someone will be checking on them to not eat dirt ) congrats in being an awesome Mom 🎉

Input. Have you though about anchoring the shelves to the wall? Idk if that's Montessori but it would help with storage and possibly cover the outlet. Also maybe you would like floating shelves. Do you want to mount the baby monitor on the wall? They make mounts.

We didn't do a crib the second time round. For my first she stopped the crib at 9months and I just bought a queen mattress and put it on the floor. To be honest they don't leave their bed. Best decision ever! Oh and we watch the HAPA family as well. Loveeeeeee them!

I wish I could do this but my baby boy will be sharing a room with his sister, who is 4. Iv already donated all her toys that could be a choking hazard but still it would stress me out. Wish we had another room.

My 2 year old has been using this method and I’m obsessed. I found some awesome things for outlets, cords, sound machine, camera etc that make them 100% baby/toddler proof. Idk how to get you the links on here?

Thanks for posting this. There's definitely not enough Montessori content on KZbin... Other than Hapa Family and a couple of others. I don't have kids yet but I've been studying up on Montessori for a year or so because we plan on having kids soon. The room looks good and functional. We need to realize that it's ultimately for the baby not for our own self gratification of how cute we can make it. Believe me, I've always dreamed of a classic gendered nursery because that was the "norm" but now that I've discovered Montessori, the benefits of this style outweight the estetic appearance of the traditional nursery model. I've read that in Montessori, natural light and visual access to the outdoors is really important. It's great that you have a nice big window in the room so I'm wondering why it is that you covered it up semi-permanently? I understand wanting less light to come in while baby is sleeping/napping but if the room is pitch black or extremely dim when she's awake, it kind of impedes her ability to explore the room and find the toys and images you've thoughtfully incorporated. Do you plan on removing the black-out curtains and blankets eventually so that she can wake up naturally with the rising sun?

Maybe you have already figured out the outlet situation (new subscriber here, bingeing your videos, no shame) but if you haven't I will tell you what we did! So at first we just plugged the monitor in in the hallway and taped the cord up high under the door frame so the monitor was in the room but the plug was out of the room. THEN, I just had my husband wire a new outlet up high (he's handy, but an electrician could do this cheap as it is very quick and simple) and hang a shelf right below it so now we have his sound machine and his monitor up on the shelf WAY out of his reach (I have to reach up pretty high to turn it on and off) and the plugs are both up there, nowhere near his floor. We also switched all of the outlets to tamper-resistant plugs because we do have an air purifier plugged in in his room, so I didn't want him unplugging that and then sticking his fingers or anything in the outlet. I also run a home daycare in our lower level so we have ALL tamper-resistant plugs down there. Basically, it's a plug that you don't even need a cover for because you could literally stick metal into it and nothing would happen unless you are plugging in an actual cord for something the right way. We also put locks on his closet door (we switched him to his own room when he was 12 months so he was walking and starting to climb and we didn't want him climbing the shelves in his closet), so they are just the cheap little hook and eye locks that you can get anywhere and we screwed them into the top of each side of the door. Super easy for us to just reach up and unlock if we need something but he can't get in there. We also started out with a twin mattress right away but since he was still learning to know where he was on the bed we put an oversized foam bath mat as his "rug" right beside his floor bed so that when he would roll off he would just land on that (we have hard floors) and stay asleep. When he turned 2 we bought him a bunk bed because 1) we are having another boy, so it will come in handy down the road, and 2) he has a small room and we wanted to be able to store toys and stuff under his bed. We put one of those long mesh bed rails on the side that doesn't touch the wall so if he does roll (he rarely does anymore) he just rolls into that and doesn't fall off. He just has to crawl down to the open spot near the foot of his bed to climb down. He loves his new bed and I think if we had gone straight from a crib to this bed it would have been big and scary but since he was already used to the twin mattress and having access to his room it is totally normal for him. ALSO he is going through a nap regression so honestly sometimes I just let him chill in there for "quiet time" during nap and it is nice he can play quietly with his toys or look at books and it just isn't a big deal, whereas if he were in a crib it would be a fight. He JUST learned how to open his door today, so we will be tackling that adventure next! Might be time for a baby gate at his door or at least at the end of the hall so he can't access the rest of the house. Love bouncing ideas off other mamas so I am so happy to have found someone who isn't a total hippie (where its like they are judging you for not being crunchy enough lol) but just wants their baby to have their needs met in the most practical and peaceful way possible. Keep sharing, mama!

I will add on the topic of outlets: be HONEST with your kids about the danger of them, even if they have covers or are tamper resistant, because you don't want them going somewhere else and thinking "this is fine, it doesn't hurt me at home". My son who is 2 can tell you "only mommies and daddies touch that", "burn you and hurt you" (he knows if you put something in there it could burn you and hurt you really bad). He has a healthy respect for things like the oven, toaster, knives, etc as well because I have just told him straight up what would happen. (I feel like sometimes we get in the habit of "dumbing down" stuff for our kids but I don't want him to think that all it would do is give him a "boo boo" because he gets bonks and scrapes and stuff all the time and doesn't bat an eye so he needs to know some things are on another level)

although there are some exceptions, if mommy feels like it’s a good arrangement, then it’s a good arrangement. again it doesn’t apply across the board, but i think many (most) mommies are so in tune with their babies... especially when it’s their first. ;) have fun these are hard but rewarding times!
