It really is true that pain can be caused by mental distress. I had bone cancer when I was 21 and I have scans every year to see if it has returned. Before each scan I experience AGONIZING pain in my left leg to the point I am unable to walk. As soon as I am told the scans are clear, the pain instantly goes away. All that to say, I found that educating myself and knowing what was happening at each stage of labor helped tremendously to manage my pain during birth. ❤

I had my first baby at home in December via natural birth and I highly recommend Ina May and the Miles Circuit. I also listened to the Bradley Method audiobook. I didn’t feel pain, by the time my midwife arrived I was 9.75cm and I pushed for 90 mins. Amazing birth experience, it is a mental game more than anything (aside from genuine complications)

Thank you Shayla! I love your content and used a lot of it in preparing for my now 6 month old. One thing to note about my L&D experience. My water broke before contractions even started, and that led to about 40 hours of labor. Honestly it was such an amazing experience though. I think what it’s important to know is to FOLLOW YOUR INSTINCTS. Stay calm, breathe, I was able to listen to my body. After 40 hours of labor and two hours of pushing, my instincts were telling me that she wasn’t going to come out. We went ahead and opted for a cesarean at that point. It was the absolute right call as she was sunny side up and had her umbilical cord wrapped around her feet at the top of my uterus three times. The doctor said there was no way she would’ve come out. I’m so glad I followed my gut. I can honestly say it was no horror story of any kind, the entire experience was incredible and I can’t wait to do it again!

Hey Shayla;) I literally took a pregnancy test and found out I was pregnant from watching your video "PREGNANT with Baby #2". On November 17th. So crazy. I have PCOS so I am irregular & often miss a period every few months so missing October's was no shocker. We weren't TTC but since getting married summer 2021, we started doing the ovulation/cycle tracking preventative method because I thought I knew my cycle and body and everything super well (I had been tracking for 6 years). BUT turns out I ovulated TWICE in October. Which is crazy for PCOS because ovulation isnt frequent. So after watching your video at 7pm Toronto time, you had mentioned you were 43 or something days into that cycle & decided to test. That was playing on my mind so I tested at 11pm and INSTANTLY got 2 lines. We are so happy with our upcoming July 2022 bebe! Thank you so much for your granola videos. I love them so much.

Not sure if anyone’s mentioned this, but the IKEA sniglar crib is a great cosleeper option! I saw the “hack” and wish I’d set it up this way from day one. It’s just the crib in the toddler bed configuration, and we have it in the corner snuggly up against our mattress, so no attachment is required and it feels very secure ✨ We have our king mattress on the floor and the height aligns almost perfectly (12 in would be perfect, ours in 10)

I 100% regret the 'purple pushing'. Having a hospital birth I was instructed to do the 'purple push'. I was also told to push before I was ready because labour and delivery was full and I was fully dilated so the doctor wanted me to start pushing in order to get me out of there faster and make room for someone else. Pushing for hours caused a lot of swelling and I had a 3rd degree tear. I regret not having a doula or midwife to advocate for me in pushing at the hospital, I think it could have been a completely different experience.

Your comment on the hands and nails is exactly how we handle it. Our baby did scratch himself some, but didn't seem to care. And I really wanted them to be able to use his hands. Cutting his nails was never enough. Babies don't use their nails so they're sharp AF. So there I was, buffing my baby's nails after cutting them. The fun part is I talk to him like it's a spa day manicure and include a short hand and arm massage for his and my amusement. The awkward part is I was super nervous the pediatrician was going to judge us for letting our kid scratch his face in a few places prior to his checkups. But she has never said anything.

People are gonna call this survivor’s bias... but reality there are statistics to back up my experience and that’s why I made the choice I did. I took the GBS test. I was positive, but I didn’t find out until after my baby was born. I had an unassisted home birth. I would’ve declined the antibiotics had there been a reason to transfer. My baby had no issues whatsoever and still hasn’t at 13 months old. It is statistically very rare for the baby to have any symptoms or complications associated with a positive GBS test in mom. It’s also possible for baby to contract it within the first 6 months outside the womb anyway, something that antibiotics at birth will have no bearing on. I think those two scenarios do not warrant destroying ours/our baby’s good bacteria for the off chance the bad bacteria is present. Bacteria in and on the mother’s body is absolutely crucial for kickstarting the baby’s microbiome and gut bacteria. The consequences of antibiotics are far greater than that of a positive GBS test. I will NOT be taking the GBS test this time. It also seems completely unreasonable to me that they would take it that seriously considering you could literally be negative one minute and positive the next, or vice versa. To me, this is not evidence based care. Many women are uneducated on this topic. I am so proud of you for diving into research on how to do what’s truly best for your body and your baby! Many many women dont, and I can’t necessarily fault them for that. We’re all sort of trained that our medical provider is gonna handle it all. I don’t trust doctors 😅 so I did tons and tons of research and continue to do so even through postpartum and now being pregnant with my second. THANK YOU for being a resource for women to realize there is a different and better way to prepare for motherhood. Not everything you or I do works for all moms and babies, but there is irrefutable evidence that supports the methods we use and how beneficial they are, and how others might not be. I’m a big advocate for getting back to our caveman roots - doing what is biologically normal for *animals* instead of thinking we’re so much more sophisticated as humans. A lot of the tips and tricks and systems and products these days are created to do what we can do with our bodies naturally for our baby. I would love to see more moms and babies experience that!! ❤️ this is a good starting place to make people rethink what they’re doing. Even if you didn’t do it all right the first time, there’s years and years (and maybe more babies) to work on improving those methods of parenting. Best of luck to you and all pregnant mamas here watching/reading this!

While I dont disagree with you on another note we don't do what we used to do, more labour work right through pragnancy kept our mom bodies in place for how they needed to be for birthing and proper alignment for pushing baby and thus baby was in a better place to be birthed without getting stuck or cramped. Now adays not so much and I've done research into this and some babies really need it after birth . Others are fine. Go with your gut

I just realised how much easier breastfeeding is when you take it for granted that you just gotta do it 😂 Where I live, women know they have to breastfeed their babies, they just... I don't know how to put it, consider it something normal, natural, and 95% of them have enough milk (or are able to boost their supply through nutrition) and if they don't get the latch immediately- big deal, they just figure it out in a few days- or have other, more experienced women help them out 😄👍🏻 The women who experience issues get medical advice and that's it. In contrast to the American society that shamed women who breastfeed (or at least it used to) we actually get shamed if we formula-feed our babies. That is, if a woman has enough milk and is able to breastfeed without any issues, but she just doesn't want to do it, it's like she's depriving her child of what it needs the most during the first few months of it's life on purpose. 😅

Currently reading it, not sure if this is the same story you're thinking of - but I just read the one where the mother suffered hyponatremia (low salt due to overconsumption of water) which resulted in severe seizures, resulting in the baby born with brain damage and passing away after 1 month. Ina mentions that they shared their story in the hopes of helping others and I am grateful for it. I had heard recommendations of how much water to drink (e.g. per hour) in labor and I will be taking those much more seriously. So used to drinking a gallon a day it seems like during pregnancy, it is good to know how important it is to be mindful of the amount during labor.
