The idea behind the red rings in the heat shrink solder joints are to hermetically seal the silder joint from water etc. I have used similar in the RAF for years to rapir cables ...we use a heat shrink gun with a curved air deflector attachment to give all round heat so you get uniform shrinkage.
@Ro32da72
@Ro32da72 2 жыл бұрын
The little rings on the ends of your solder sleeves are environmental seals, to keep moisture out of the solder joint. They're great devices, just go easy with how you apply the heat on pvc-jacketed cable as the cable insulation can melt before the solder. I also would tin the wires before fitting the solder sleeve to avoid a dry joint. Very handy little things; I use loads at work (not cars).

I use those connectors quite a bit, if your joining a bunch of close wires I use a wide blade metal scraper and place it under the wire I’m working on to avoid melting others around it!

Heatshrink solder sleeve connectors widely available on ebay. Also recommend Lidl Parkside heat guns when they have them on sale - wide range of temperature control with LCD display and lots of accessory tips so safer to use in tight spaces.

Hi Rob, great episode as normal. As an aside when in-line splicing multiple cables it’s best practice to stagger the joints if you can it saves ending up with a big lump in the cable and protects against possible issues further down the line.
@chrispop99
@chrispop99 2 жыл бұрын
When you make electrical joints, stagger them along the loom so you don't get a big lump when you tape over them. Use self-amalgamating tape as it will survive the weather better.

A really good repair to the Polo, you have made it as good as new. Even the professionals could not detect that it was repaired. Regarding the heat shrink and solder joints, I use them for harness repairs which are exposed to the weather. They are really good if used properly.

I have not seen those little joiners before and I am getting old! They look like a quick fix certainly if you don't do soldering. I was doing a thumbs up when the lights came on then I laughed realising of course that you can't see me! At least I followed your saying ' let's get involved'. That car is almost like new now with the low mileage and unrecorded. I think that is a fair price and a profit so well done to you both for another top repair. Thanks Rob and Chris for another great video.👍👍

It turned out nice in the end, but you had a challenging, not to mention expensive hill to climb to get there. It turned out to be a bigger gamble than expected one way and another, but if anyone could turn it round, you two could achieve the right result.

Hi Rob, I mainly repair these new shape Polos, do you have a trade account with TPS? I find most the genuine parts are pretty reasonable, and cheaper than main dealer, especially things like the fog lights, front wings etc. They also stock the 3pin connectors you needed for pennies. Sometimes not worth the time searching for used parts. Anyway, great video as always 👍

Great to see before & after at the end. I must add when a garage does the tracking make sure the device on the steering wheel is fitted on to make sure the steering is straight. I had mine done once and it was all in the green on the screen like in this video, but there was no device on the steering wheel and when i drove away after he finished, the steering wheel was slightly to the left when going in a straight line. I had to go back to get it redone and he got it right the next time round.

I'm not a fan of those solder seal connectors, they are not the best. Tried using them for a while but even when taking extra care to join the two wires as neatly and accurately as possible, moisture can still get in there and the connection can corrode and fail after a year or two. I find the best solution is to solder, heat shrink and then seal it all with a piece of amalgamating silicon tape. It actually doesn't take any longer than messing around with those things.

That Polo was a parts nightmare Rob! But you came out on the right side. Royal Mail are a disaster. I switched broadband supplier on the 23rd November. They sent my new fibre router out on the 30th on a 48 hr tracked service. The switch was scheduled for today (7th) but the router has not arrived. So I am now using my 'phone as a 4G hub (as the old supplier has terminated their service of course) after buying a Wifi dongle until the Royal Mail decide to do their jobs.
