MIKE: I live in Alaska and have been for several years producing a variant of your loose pack fire-starter! Mine is also a part of my package for Emergency Evac. The thing is I use sawdust collected from the local cabinet maker, so also it is dry and Free. Then I use my prepper skill to melt parafin wax into the saw dust, then when ready I take the mix and stuff in a small cup cake pan, pack, and let cool. Then when they are cold I tip the pan over and they fall out. This makes 16 mini pucks that are able to be kept for emergency use! They are waterproof, can be carried in coat pocket or back pack! I can build a fire just like you do and they only thing I'm out is the cost of the parafin & my time. But I wish you the best of luck on your adventure! Great addition to your firewood biz!!

I thought I was at a point in life that all the great discoveries were over. I was wrong! Gone are the days of collecting pallets for kindling and asking for paper at the grocery checkout. I am a retired Mason and that is a good way to start a fire. Especially in a real masonry fireplace with clay flue tile when it is very cold. You want a small fire to start and warm the flue, or you might crack a tile. I call that the lincoln log way. You can leave the smallest cracks in the wood for low heat. Another tip. I have never cleaned a flue the traditional way. Cut a piece of log chain and let it hang from the top of the stack. Then go up there once in a while and swirl the chain all the creosote will break off or leave the chain where you can reach it from the bottom. If you use dry wood and a hot species, you don't have to worry much about even cleaning it. Just look up or down and check it.

I am wishing y’all good luck and admire your efforts in developing a new product. But I still prefer my 6 sheets of newspaper and 5 or 6 pieces of kindling that don’t cost me a penny. I get 2 free newspapers tossed into my yard every week. And they are only good for starting a fire or lining a bird gage. And I don’t have a bird. I hand split all of my firewood from my camp and making kindling is my favorite part. I split around a cord a season and my wife burns it all. The camp is 20 acres with 10 to 11 acres wooded with mostly hard woods. And it is surrounded by several sections of woods and the owner lets me have any dying or downed trees. Taking care of the camp is part of my exercise program. I grew up doing every thing by hand and actually like it. It kinda fits your slogan about working and sleeping. I do get my best sleep at my camp. I do cut my 5 to 6 acres of grass with a ride on lawn tractor and a string trimmer.

Mike - excellent idea to utilize a byproduct and repurpose it into fire starter 👍. Here in South Carolina where (dead) pine trees are plentiful, we use “fat lighter” the same way. Mother Nature creates it and just a small piece of fat lighter the size of a celery stick starts a roaring fire with ease. We’ve got tons and tons of fat lighter all over our property, but few people around here rely on wood to heat during the winter so it mostly stays in the woods untouched. Hey, I bet your WV property has some fat lighter logs laying around on the ground.

Big fan of your channel. I think this will be a huge success for OWTM. Be prepared to be gobsmacked from initial orders….I put mine in. I looked on Google when you showed the gifted wax chips earlier this year. Plenty of “how to make them” videos but no one selling fire starter chips online. I’m originally from western PA and recently retired in the Houston, TX area after working 26 years for Kubota. I’ll be up in you’re neck of the woods next month. Perhaps we will run into Mike and Hunter when we make our annual mandatory Sheetz stops.

Pretty much exactly how I build a stove fire. I make my own FW starters with basically the same ingredients. I'm sure tons of others do the same, but it's a nice option to just buy a couple bags of yours for the winter. If we were closer, I'd gladly supply some of the shavings from the shop. Hmmmm I'm just a wee bit behind making mine for this winter, so I better get crackin'. Thanks for the reminder.

Just wanted to tell you I was ready for the hurricane with the Ecoflo battery I bought as a result of your channel, Luckily we live in Northcentral Florida and had no problem when that killer storm made landfall. We never lost power but if we had we were ready. Thanks for your information. The worst part of the event was waiting to see where the storm was going to hit. That process has been described as being stalked by a turtle. Thanks again. Now I have to look into wax coated fire starters.

Sounds like a home run. Not to boast but I have found that dried rosemary boughs can have a fire roaring in 30 seconds. It grows like weeds here in NM and I'm constantly trimming five monster bushes in my yard. Only takes two weeks for the trimmings to dry enough for kindling.

Over here in Sweden we get something similar. Sawdust and a melted solid fat put into like a small muffin tin, so a little briquette of a firestarter. They work quite well. You've got a winner there I think. With a solid one you can put in a wick though, make it even easier to light up if say you only had matches...

He had a video about where he would take a stick of cherry, hickory or oak firewood and turn it into chips and had custom labels he had printed and had bar codes put on them so the stores could just scan them out like any other product.
