he deliberately kept the volume down in the mix to keep the flavour of the song with its wall of sound. He says too that with some of the guitarists around him at the time (Eric Johnson etc) he felt a bit intimidated. In retrospect it is a great solo as Rick Beato has pointed out on his channel where he later interviewed Christopher Cross

Was wondering when you'd get around to Christopher Cross! He was prevalent in the early 80s as part of the easy listening/yacht rock sound typical of the time. "Ride Like the Wind" was his very first single (in 1980), and he followed it up with great songs like "Sailing" (#1 hit!), "Never Be the Same", "Arthur's Theme (The Best That You Can Do" (#1 hit!), "All Right", and "Think of Laura". He is now 70 years old and still touring! Others from this time period you might check out are Air Supply ("All Out of Love"), Eric Carmen ("All By Myself"), Dan Fogelberg ("Longer"), and England Dan and John Ford Coley ("Nights Are Forever Without You").

That great backing vocal is that of Michael McDonald, past of the Doobie Brothers, and much in demand backing vocals to Kenny Loggins. Michael has shared popular duets with male and female singers, but his own work is the absolute best. Play his live with Kenny Loggins, and his solo music, has smooth wide range , to falsetto. Taking it to the streets, I keep forgetting, What a fool believes, On my own with Patti Labelle.

When I was 15 (in 1985) , I escaped from an abusive youth facility in Redding California. I sang this song to myself over and over and over, like on repeat. as I made my way through the mountains and forests and then hitchhiking 200 or so miles back to my home town. It took my mind off the hunger and the cold and the fear. You might think that those are traumatic memories for a song, but it was the song that got me through the trauma of it.

Has not much to do with the reaction, but I felt the need to honor my Great Uncle who fought in WWII. When he came home, he became a hog buyer. Not glamorous, but he would buy a new Oldsmobile every year in cash . He would “ride like the wind” out west and get lots of tickets going over 100 mph. He was the only survivor of his company. He’d tell the troopers after his service he’d could drive as fast as he wanted!

A no bells and whistles performance, in a small venue, just a guy singing, playing and tuning his guitar and telling a few funny stories in between, truly a dream come true. Sailing is definitely a beautiful chill out track. He's recorded so many great tracks and as you mentioned Think of Laura, is such an emotional song. He won 4 Grammy Awards for it. He released a 2nd album in 1983 with a few hits on it. But sadly after that his fame declined. Success came quickly, all at once & then suddenly faded. Too bad as he was very talented.

Finally! Lots of memories attached to this song! It was very popular when I left my husband in North Dakota heading back to my home state of New Mexico. I took our 4 girls and rode like the wind! It was about every tenth song on the radio at the time. The volume was up to the hilt and I was belting out the chorus. Special song for me!

You have been on this Micheal MacDonald CCR high pitched male singer thing for awhile and you have skipped the king of the movie soundtracks Kenny Loggins. His hits include I'm Alright from Caddyshack, Footloose from Footloose and Danger Zone from Top Gun. (edit to add) he was also featured in We Are The World.

The background vocal was Michael McDonald. He’s another guy you’ll have to check out. His solo work and his time with The Doobie Brothers. And in 1986 he did an amazing duet with Patti LaBelle called On My Own.

He is one of my very favorite singers! He kind of fell by the wayside when MTV came out because he didn't fit the MTV mold after he won a whole bunch of Grammy's in 1980. So sad. He's still tours. He's been sick with covid for a little while. Love the reaction!

Christopher Cross's voice is smoooooth.. one of my favorites and a great songwriter too. All the comments say.. Gotta' do "Sailing" but also other top hits.. definitely (and in no particular order): "Say you'll be mine" "Never be the same" "All right" "Think of Laura" (much slower, but SUCH BEAUTIFUL sound. I must have listened to that song 100 times after a break up with one of my first girlfriends, named Laura, in my teens in the 80s), then there's "Arthur's Theme" (famous movie theme song).. but yeah, "Sailing" is most definitely the #1 hit that put Christopher Cross on the map.
