Dang, David! I'm so bummed you lost him! The whole time I was thinking what a challenge it was going to be keeping the line away from the prop. I wonder if a possible solution would have been to keep the boat moving forward at 5 knots as well as fighting it longer to tire him out. Thank you for sharing!
@david_shih

it was a delicate balance between goign forward and fighting the fish. when we were going forward and it was pulling backwards, it with run the line like crazy. but i think youre right about fighting him longer to tire him out!

There are oodles to choose from. You can go for Penn again, or for Shimano. Penn International Shimano TLD series or Tiagra or Talica reels. Both are brands are very well proven all over the world. Both Penn and Shimano offer 2 x spedd reels and all are lever drag which is more powerful and waaaaay smoother than the star-drag in the vid. There are also Accurate and Avet and Alutecnos. Great great reels but up there $$$$wise. Personal pick for your boat would probably be a Shimano Tiagra, if $$$ are issue then the graphite TLD series.

good point, just need to learn about the different options so i know what to go after! shimano?
@elkskiutah8204
@elkskiutah8204 Жыл бұрын
@@david_shih yes Shimano is good. It's like a hot rod car. People add special low friction handles. Super strong side plates. Not sure how much storage . They can hang from the ceiling mounts. I think you would want several sizes. I'm sure you had 60-80 # line like for that Marlin you want a reel that holds lots of line. A trolling rod with 60-80#, and a 40# and a 20# for casting bait like ballyhoo. And a spinning rod with 20# so you can cast spoons if you see fish jumping and birds diving into a school of bait fish. I would put out A hand squid line and trolling rod every chance I got when the weather was compatible to drop some sail quickly. Even 10 knots is good trolling speed.
@elkskiutah8204
@elkskiutah8204 Жыл бұрын
@@david_shih you can put on plenty of line on a SHIMANO Tiagra A TI30A Big Game Two-Speed Conventional Reel . I'm not an expert at all I've only been in a few 5 day fishing trips for tuna and a couple 2 days. Fishing shops like clarksbait could suggest some equipment. If you ever see a boil up of tuna and don't have a slab jig tied on a spinning rod you will regret it.

David you really need to study and prepare for landing a Marlin. Some people have been killed. I have friends that fish marlin around the world and they tell stories about some that have tail danced into the cockpit of sportfishers and a couple wear the scars from the bill striking them. That was a nice fish. All billfish should be catch and release.

Hey Unc, thanks for the advice. After this video I actually read about a woman in Florida that got stabbed in the leg with the bill of a marlin. I had no idea…Tom was definitely right about being unequipped for keeping it. I’m glad it got away to be honest, it would have been more than we could handle.

It's better to lose him, he can show off his new bling to his friends. That tranny oil gets milky on mine more than not. Change the oil from the top if you sit, but just do the seals next haulout. Make sure you have a spare housing in case a yahoo breaks it at Christmas time.

Clearly David has never watched The Perfect Storm, after watching that movie and seeing how one of the fishermen in the movie got impaled by a sword fish, I would never stand or much less stick my head in the water between a sword fish and the person who has it hooked on the other end, that is unless I am standing 5ft above deck from the fish and ready to hook it

man i love that movie but don't remember that scene...good to know. as you can see I'm a newly minted fisherman...going 2 weeks strong in this video! The 1st fish we ever caught on the boat was that 5ft wahoo and then i was all in.

@@david_shih Not sure if maybe I might be mistaken it with the shark scene. But I did use to live in a fishing area and have heard a few cases on long line fishing boats getting impaled, sword fish can swim very fast specially when frighten, where I lived sifhermen would take the bony area in the sword and sharpen it even more to protect them selves from pirates. Cheers from Costa Rica, if you are ever in the area I would love to meet up with you guys. Pura Vida 🤟

Prop story dont hold. He was too strong on the rod breaker. Give more slack when the fish is strong. Always a man at the helm ready to move away the line when it’s about to go under the boat. Jockeying the helm is super important. Man with rod slacks tension when boat have to move away from line.

@@david_shih I get that you are an entertainer and you have to indulge certain lesser intellects. I also know there are far more stupid people that need that kind of interaction. But for the others who see things hooked massive marlin and DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. That doesn't inspire a lot of confidence that you should even be on a boat. Yes I know this comment will draw out the trolls like the moth to the flame. But the can look at me like they stepped in dog sh*t all the want. Acting stupid to draw in views annoys the sh*t out of me. Yes for the taxi cab confessional, I live a very stressful life being surrounded by stupidity. Cheers.
@david_shih
@david_shih Жыл бұрын
hey Freaki...pretty cool name btw. so confession time...i had only been fishing for 2 weeks when we filmed this. At the risk of drawing out the judgemental comments myself, I really don't know much about fishing, much less how to land a marlin. I was actually considering jumping in with the pole to unwrap it from the rudder/prop--obviously stupid in hindsight. i had no idea the power behind these bill fish as i had only handled a wahoo, mahi, and a few small tuna up until this point. I frequently get comments about how I don't deserve to own a cat b/c don't have enough experience or I shouldn't be out sailing bc I dont know what I'm doing. But I see it differently, i've discovered the best way for me to learn is to jump in head 1st and get rid of any way to back out. Then i can't quit and I always figure it out. I do however, try surround myself with some experts and learn on the way!
@svfreakitiki
@svfreakitiki Жыл бұрын
@@david_shih I certainly didn't say you don't deserve to own one. If you're able to get one, then yes; you deserve one. I however built mine. So I am an outcast/black sheep of the sailing community because I didn't buy one. It's not a question of whether or not you know what you are doing. Everyone at one point didn't know what they were doing. I have nothing against people trying to learn and indulge the community. No amount of education will ever trump experience. Anyone who says otherwise is a moron. I have a problem with people using misleading advertising to draw in views and that is what your caption came off as. Someone running around like a chicken with his head cut off so that it would draw in people, particularly even more lesser intellects that post comments like, here's what you should have done. HOWEVER, that is not the case. You legitimately say you don't know what you are doing. So I apologizing for misinterpreting and being an ass. As mentioned you just happen to catch me in the mood. Maybe I'll see you on the water.

@@svfreakitiki no apology needed my friend! I must say it's rare, but much appreciated, to have a productive conversation on the comments. Thank you for that. It's pretty amazing that you built your cat...i built (or rebuilt) 1% of mine and can't imagine having to do the other 99%! See you on the water one day!
