Your statement along the lines “people don’t want to hear new ideas, they want to hear the same arguments they’ve heard their whole life” hits home. Remind me of my Christian private school which showed the same videos to us from 6th-11th grade

Do people with that mentality get…. Bored? I would get so bored. I LOVE learning new things. I love discovering new ways to understand the world. I love evolving. I love being curious. I think it helps me love and respect myself and others better. This other mentality sounds so boring. For me, it’s way more fulfilling and interesting to approach the world and my own mind with curiosity. I wonder if this comes from my non religious upbringing… never connected those two before.
@bunasdfghjkl2 ай бұрын
@@ka8544i also went to a christian private school that functioned similarly, and honestly, i think the lack of curiosity is part of the same systems that keeps certain religious folk stagnant and complacent. its fear motivated, and functions to bridge the gap between cognitive dissonance. its fulfilling enough for them to confirm their opinions over and over and spread them to the youth, and only approach new ideas if theyre putting them down or slotting them neatly in their prior framework.

@@ka8544 This. Reading or hearing the same point made over and over again, about the same things? It's like doing the same exact puzzles or mathematics problems over and over again. Sure, you might find different ways to solve the problems, but it would get repetitive. I'd wonder what I was missing out on by not looking into new things. For me, there are movies, books and such that I like and I do reread, but like everybody else I want something new, or at least new to me, most of the time I want entertainment.
@sorbetheart2 ай бұрын
@@ka8544 Maybe it is because of your non religious background. Personally for me, as a Christian I used to be very closed minded and I'm not gonna lie had a lot of pride. I'm still working on that now, but I just mean that before I wouldn't want to hear any disagreements about Christianity. I'm really not completely sure what happened but now I'm willing to hear why people think or feel a certain way about it, and I want to learn why they feel that way. Or even why they feel the opposite way about anything else that I agree with. I just find it intriguing and I want to put myself in their shoes. I did go through multiple stages before I could get to this point though. Anger, confusion, learning, then understanding. I am still Christian btw, but I definitely think one of my influences was/is Cliffe Knechtle. Listening to how he talks and his reasoning. I think that made me really realise that it's okay to ask questions regarding what I believe and want to know more. I mean I did know that I could do it, but it used to feel wrong to do, as if I was just supposed to follow Christianity like it's a religion, mindlessly. Christianity is about your relationship with God. A mum who loves her child shouldn't get angry at her child questioning her because it wants to know more about or understand something. Patience is a virtue, and I think when you truly love someone, you can be patient with them. I think to God that we're like children, so he understands why we're so curious and want to understand. He wants us to understand. When curious people have their questions unanswered it's like an itch that never goes away... well to me it's a little like that.

Honestly, I agree. It's weird to see this coming out of GM skeptic and Eric Murphy, knowing their own content histories. Also, this approaches the content on youtube with a certain point of view, which is encouraged or discouraged by various parts of the youtube eco-system. A creator historically isn't simply an artist who makes a product to try to market to consumers. They are encouraged by youtube's practices, layout, etc. to foster a community among their viewers. In that sense, things like the youtube comments below videos can be places where certain people hang out, and want to interact parasocially with a creator and interact with others who frequent the videos, see what the creator's opinion of a piece of media is, etc. I saw another creator here on youtube who seemed to have the view that comments existed to solely give feedback on their video, and wondered how to deal with "off-topic comments". It's bizarre, because it's obvious as a consumer youtube encourages this type of community creation, but the creators themselves sometimes seem almost unaware or hostile to the concept.

Because a question went over a person's head and they rolled their eyes that was conclusive that the Atheist got "demolished" in the debate, and there was no need to include the rest of the segment where the Atheist continues to explain objectivity and subjectivity. I am a Christian Content Creator and I don't feel attacked, I agree. I did a few videos like this because everyone said it was the new trend, but what they don't tell you is, often KZbin wouldn't monetize them-- due to feeling like a goober floating head in the corner, it felt unoriginal , not monetizing, and other reasons, I stopped making them. IF I comment on someone else's content, I try to make it a VERY small portion of my video now, and try to actually add value for much longer than the original clip was. I have no idea how these guys get monetized for taking someone else's 10 minute clip, and simply adding 2 minutes just restating what we already watched. Part of Christianity is sharing the good news, so if the goal is to get more eyes on something, then they achieved it, even at the expense of not getting monetization or looking like a goober in the corner. You, likely, would not have seen that Lennox clip had it not been reposted by the influencer. It put life back into a clip that otherwise would have stayed buried. I have no idea the motive behind these guys, and I don't do it anymore, but as someone in a similar boat, I partially understand it. ALSO, as someone who has done deliverance and seen exorcisms in real life, no respected minister really cares for those three horror films. Nefarious is probably the closest to what it actually looks like. AND, all the influencers I know are not classified as nonprofits. Of course, we're all small players, but just fyi P.S. yes, it is not a Christian problem, it's all over the place. But we should be holding a higher standard

I used to work for a popular ministry/business (The Elijah List, for those interested) back in the day ... and the main guy made millions off of this tactic. He would take "prophetic words" from popular "prophets", write a little 1 paragraph intro and insert their content. It turned into a "God's man of power for the hour" club where everyone was making money off of each other, copying and re-copying content. He's still doing the same thing now ... only now he's schmoozed his way into the christian networks. It's really lame that people people buy into their scam ... I dig your stuff, GMS ... keep it up!

the worst part is that a lot of these videos if you go to the comments a lot of the engagement is people debunking the arguments or complaining about how bad the video is... THAT IS STILL ENGAGEMENT. so if you see something you disagree with, the best thing you can do is not give it engagement, I hate it too to let them say whatever they want unopposed, but that is the algorithm we were set up with when they removed dislikes. give engagement to response videos instead, like our man Drew here. they have a much better reach than your comment.
@roscowbrown39372 ай бұрын
I don’t know if that’s necessarily true, because channels mostly reach their target audience, the vast majority of comments here are from atheists who already agreed with the sentiment of the video before clicking on it. These Christian channels will make money anyways and their comment sections are where you’ll find the believers so some attempt needs to be made to change their minds
@ravwoofles38582 ай бұрын
@@roscowbrown3937 I'd say it's more of a double edged sword. On one hand the clear bottom feeder manages to rake in some sort of profit from engagement, on the other it can boost the discourse to more people, making more room for conversations to be had. Really the key is to go in with the right mentality, emotional stability, and to pick your battles wisely.
@Isaac-hm6ihАй бұрын
To a point, but I've commented to criticise a video which I thought was this sort (you can de-recommend videos, which I was suggesting others do), and had the creator actually respond, taking the critiques seriously. This also ends up feeding into the whole 'no true Scotsman' problem. Like sure, each of a bunch of people from a religion were awful, but they weren't doing it right? I'm a Christian and I agree with what I discern to be the spirit of your message: not an attack on Christianity itself but what you perceive to be immoral behavior among some very popular proponents of the faith. I agree with this perception. I'm responsible for organizing the preaching roster at the church I am a member of. I wouldn't ask someone to preach again if their sermons were mostly just someone else's work (and yes, we do deal with that occasionally). I'm very strong on "citing sources". Part of that is contextual: my church is "Open Brethren" in tradition, and has less in the way of "theological controls" - my church can have an Arminian and a Calvinist sitting next to each other, so when one of those people stands up to preach, it's best for everyone if everyone knows where they draw their ideas from when formulating their message. There's also a problem of misinformation - we had a gentleman recently preach and say that when Titus destroyed Jerusalem in 70 AD, he exiled the Jews and renamed the province Syria Palaestina, problem is that happened 60 odd years later under Hadrian. There's issues with people using graphics such as tables or flowcharts ripped straight off Google (and even Instagram in one case). I've even visibly cringed when speakers have said "having read the passage in several translations I then go to Google and KZbin to see what other Christians say" - very low academic bar, when access to decent scholarly theological resources is available. Some could argue that the sources are by nature cited in these videos, however when I have looked at this kind of content I don't see links to the original source, and frankly, with the way AI is now, the whole lot could be deepfaked. Though that's unlikely, proper citing actually involves exposing the source content entirely so others can locate it and get a proper understanding of the context of the source.

I appreciate your charitable take here. Christian communities can have a lot of internal trust, and that can be powerful and beautiful, especially when someone is in a time of great need and can depend on others to care for them. Unfortunately, that trust can have downsides - it can make the community vulnerable to freeloaders. One can claim affiliation with the group and reap the benefits of the trust that earns while not giving back to, or even directly harming the community. I’m glad there are folks like yourself who work to maintain a healthy balance of trust and critical thought. I wish you and yours the best!

The converse with atheists is there are a number of channels that respond to apologetics videos. But at least they address the arguments, and that is the bulk of their content. It's like you said: They don't want to look for new arguments, and new information. They want the comfort of things they have already heard.
