Watched this with my 11yr old nephew who just caught up to the anime a few weeks ago and he was so happy. He was so hyped and laughing with Luffy and I'm just happy I'm able to experience this with him. Specially since I used to watch One Piece with him when he was a baby. Hats off to the voice actors and animators coz the passion was oozing in this episode.

I think the fan base as a whole was expecting too much from this one episode. This isn’t the end of gear 5. This was its anime debut. The next few episodes are where the good stuff truly lies. I did agree with the sound effects though. There were times where it did feel like noise bombardment but i didn’t mind too much. This episode was an intro to gear 5 and tying up some loose ends with other stuff going on so that next is more about Kaido v Luffy. There will still be other stuff going on but not as much and the fight kicks up a couple of notches.

There were definitely parts I liked better in anime, like the increased bounciness in ground and environment, the extra animations in deflecting Kaido's blast and other parts. The music! It was all awesome I agree. It's fair to say there is still more to the fight, I'm super excited for finale and⚡part too. Cannot wait for finish tho

It's like you took the thoughts out of my mind while watching this episode. Overall I thought it was amazing but felt blue balled when the whole Hiyori and Orochi scene happened, I knew it had to happened, but makes me SUPER excited for next weeks episode because there are no loose ends to worry about now, the only thing left to happen is this fight to conclude between Luffy and Kaido. I bet next weeks episode might even be better, I hope it is, either way One Piece PEAK!

I am super worried about anime only's right now, because I gotta say, if they're going by 1 episode per chapter like they've been doing, the only episode that'll 100% be JUST Luffy vs Kaido will be the next one. Despite what most of you all think, not everything is wrapped up yet, and very technically this is the end of the fight. Like... fight probably has 4-5 more episodes left. The chapters of the fight yet to be adapted are 1045-1049. Last episode covered 1044 from start to finish. But yeah, Onigashima is still above the capitol, the entire island is still pretty much on fire, and there are still like one and a half flashback sequences that are in manga (let alone toei's shenanigans)... it's gonna be peak anime for sure, but I really wouldn't get my hopes up for a fully uninterrupted fight.

Hiyori's line about the dawn will come and Kozuki is a clan that always keeps its promise and the next shot being luffy leaping infront of the moon was epic in my opinion And the anime did great with her scenes as well , what killed the moment was that it was unfortunately sandwiched between Gear 5 stuff , had it been in a different episode it would have been amazing !!

It served it's purpose because Orochi was talking about how even if he died then Kaido still needed to be defeated. So having that then cut to Luffy man handling Kaido shows that he indeed will be defeated.

I had all these same complaints, and I feel like with all the discussion around Gear 5, they really shot themselves in the foot this episode. While Gear 5 itself was INCREDIBLE and everything I wanted it to be, the pacing and other issues really made it feel like Toei were doing their best to kill their own hype during what should’ve been their crown jewel. Even if 1045/1072 is much closer along the lines of what people were wanting and waiting for, this is the debut episode. In 5 years this will be seen as THE Gear 5 episode… and it really wasn’t even a top 5 episode of the arc so far, and that’s just a bit disappointing no matter how great Gear 5 looked.

I agree but if you also use common sense, you would have known yourself the real gear 5 “showcase” is ep 1072… There was no way Toei were gonna mix luffy going all out whilst doing the hiyori/orochi scene at the same time😂 they just follow the manga then cut it off before the actual showcase hence making 1072 an actual introduction to gear 5 rather than what people were expecting him to do in their minds.

First Robin received a epic new form with Demonio and now Luffy with the most ridiculous power in Gear 5. Wano had some very good highs. Hiyori scene was also really good and juxtaposed the scenes with Luffy.

As an animator, those gear fifth scenes looked super fun. Crazy action is actually much easier than slow/solid scenes because you can be more loose with the Inbetweens. I was mostly just sad with how much they reuse the same animation. I also think they could have pulled back the action just a tad for better visual understanding. It was pretty difficult to follow at times. I'm thinking next episode will probably less chaotic and I'm looking forward to that.

I honestly loved that they didn't have anyone really acknowledge the cartoony nature of everything in this episode. Kaido's doing the eye-popping thing and the "bump-on-the-head" gag from old cartoons without a shred of acknowledgement, making it feel as though this transformation is seamlessly affecting the world and people around them and will only be noticed after it's been around for a good bit.

@@kklh7918 Naruto's best form was sage mode. Not even Baryon mode. It isn't always the case of power = better and sage mode drip was ON POINT. It should've been the peak. Close second is SO6P and third is the raw kurama chakra mode in Naruto (not shippuden). This is my opinion really. Baryon mode is not bad but it is outclassed by every other form.

I like to think that since the Nika fruit has a will of it’s own it also has its own haki. And that’s why Luffy’s haki was 2 different colors after the transformation. The gold-ish lightning being Nika’s. Could also explain the solo sky split. Course it’s just a theory.

It's interesting to hear you described the drums as less epic but more party like. I'm from Trinidad and Tobago and we have African and Indian influences in our music. The drums they used reminded me of the drums we play in the stands during sporting events. As soon as I heard the beat my heart started racing almost as though I was getting ready to see my favourite football team rush down the field attempting to score a goal. It felt very epic to me. I think my favorite moment is when Luffy sends that blast breath back at Kaido and we see Kaido been charred black and then he exhales black smoke, like from old cartoons. Makes me laugh every time. And Luffy clapping his feet. I was hoping for the William Hanna Tom-scream though. Maybe next episode when Kaido starts doing some damage back.

I absolutely loved how totally overboard the animation went with the final shots of the Gear 5 reveal (with Luffy bouncing around, lying on the ground laughing). They added a ton of extra frames there with lots of different coloring so that our eyes actually couldn't quite catch everything - and we noticed. This made Luffy seem even more mysterious, mischievious and intangible in that form than his already very impressive feats. The cartoon effects - and especially the "squeaky trombone"-sound when Kaido "went down" after accidentally roasting himself - were also super funny and genuinely made me laugh.

given that Luffy "died" in the previous episode, my opinion would be to do Hyori's arc first, right up to but just before Orochi cathing fire, to give it suspense, then flash to shots of Nami, Chopper, Sanji, all being upset, crying or worried, and then either the narrator, or better yet, total silence, except the drums, and zunesha pronouncing joyboy has returned (I think Joyboy was a nickname), then we go into Luffy's arc with Gear 5 as the triumphant return. Either way would be good for splitting up the two arcs completely

Side note: You mentioned how Gear 5 doesn't increase Luffy's strength, but it is a Zoan fruit and Zoan fruits do increase physical strength and stamina. Kaido said as much. I could be wrong though. I misremember things often.

One thing I liked about the chapter though, was the rushed flashback to all the other gears and when he used them for the first time. It was such a good way to remember all the other gears and how far he's come since then. I do agree with you on the flashback with the CP0 agent mingling in the fight. That was a buzzkill for me, as it just happened. What makes this a great episode for me personally, is that it made me laugh. A lot. Having a heavy depression, makes it hard for me to laugh and feel amused/happy, so to feel that way after weeks of not really feeling it, was so nice. It's why I will re-watch the episode again and to take in what happened, bc a lot of things was shown that I barely noticed at the first watch. Anyway, thanks for all the great One Piece content you push out. I love your energy. Keep up the good work.

The animation was so good and so perfectly in line with what Gear 5th should be, and the fact you just can't get away from this episode without knowing *exactly* what they were going for is a testament to the animators' hard work paying off in real time. I did find the sequence where Luffy deflects the Blast Breath to be pretty hard to follow, though, and that continues from an ongoing trend since Wano of some scenes being (in my opinon) a bit too visually cluttered and overanimated. If they slowed it down and stabilized it a bit, maybe focused more on the impact of the breath against the rubbery wall than Luffy struggling, I think it would have been a lot better. I see what you mean about it being a good blend of modern and classic cartoon animation, which is 100% what I wanted out of Gear 5th, but for me it didn't actually achieve that so much as it felt like standard "the animators worked overtime this week" post-WCI One Piece animation until we cut back to Kaido. The implication of cartoon shenanigans is there, but it doesn't actually *feel* as whimsical or free-spirited as most of the episode does. Totally agree about the scene of him running around and jumping and enjoying his new powers to be absolutely INCREDIBLE (despite the repeats). No powerup has ever felt more like Luffy personified than Gear 5, and in that respect this was a really great episode to showcase his new abilities, and I'm hoping they'll knock it out of the park next week.

What i really like about all this is Kaido's reactions 'till the end. He doesn't get why Luffy's fruit is affecting him, coz it's shouldn't be possible, yet it is happening. The eyes, the cartoonish burning and what comes next, he just stares at Luffy (back in serious/normal mode) being like "w.t.f?". Until his demise, he's just confused like we are. "What's THAT on the roof? What's going on? Who are you? Why is my body expanding? I am Kaidou. Why am I treated like a little snake thing?" i just love it!

I love the use of Haki here and the sound effects, chaotic camera, reality bending moments, and overuse of cartoon effects. They make PERFECT sense because this is his first time using this power. He doesnt even know really what he is doing fully. If the fruit itself does have some type of mind of its own, Luffy may be fighting against this other personality (Similar to the nine tails and Naruto). I think as luffy trains and learns more about Gear 5, the overall feel will become more controlled and the sound effects/camera more purposeful then passive.

There are two parts of the transformation that I thought was epic as hell, when the screen turn dark and you can see the redness in his eyes and the smile. That part gave me goosebumps. The second part that I like is when he was jumping up and down on the hard floor like a trampoline as the camera came closer to him. Soooo dope

I thought the non action scenes (with hiyori and orochi) were pretty average, and they dragged some stuff out (playing that 1 scene 3 times, flashback). BUT the action was really well animated, and the compositing/photography team (not sure which one) did a really good job with the filters/coloring. I really wished they adapted at least 2 chapters for this episode tho, it's a special occasion after all.

I think Hiyori's scene was fantastic and her line about the dawn coming, followed with Luffy silhouetted against the moon was perfection. Her VA's acting was incredible, too. The CP0 flashback could easily have been cashed in for a little more time spent on the crazier frames to give them maybe a second to breathe so we can make out all the zaniness better - and the flashes from all the previous gears before the full Gear 5 official reveal. That shit flew by SO fast - an extra second here and there would have been great so we can at least see without having to pause ever half a second. >.

This is probably my most rewatched, standalone episode. I couldn't stop smiling and laughing when Luffy was on screen and I loved the Hiyori scene. For me, it was like a palate cleanser. A moment to stop, breathe, remember the stakes (Kaido and Orochi are vile people, even if they look silly right now) then set up for 1072. The rest of the critiques I agree with. Still, I couldn't help but smile almost the whole time

I read that the ending doesn’t actually cut down on the overall animation content per episode because the reason there was no ending was because they opted for an extra long opening theme, they’re no longer doing that now that there’s an ending again

I finally got to watch your manga episodes about this from a year ago! And now this commentary on the anime is well done as well! As an animator, I watched the episode 5 times simply to see Luffy “move”! I get the nit-picks but the hype and anticipation surrounding the moment have to be factored in and the anime doesn’t disappoint! I even thought I would start reading the manga but the black and white panels left me wanting! I can’t wait to watch the next episode!

After watching BDA Laws video where he goes essentially frame by frame of the episode, I ended up appreciating it a lot more. I almost think that the episode would have benefited from slowing down the animation so we can appreciate all the cartoonish movements that they added

That's exactly why everyone is being harsher on the pacing and reuse of animation and flashbacks more so than normal, it's ridiculous they shoved shit like that into an episode this special when they could have drawn out the good parts and made them even better. The animation was SO GOOD, but the talent was wasted.

One thing I just realized was that when Luffy goes big and gets the muscles is that he has Garps body structure, which probably shows he sees Garp as the pinnacle of raw strength and muscles which was sick

The one thing I like about the quick montage flashback of their fight is that it juxtaposes well with our eyes are processing. Luffy vs Kaido has been brutal from their first encounter in act 1. And Luffy is still fighting with the same intensity he has from when he first met Kaido. He knows what’s on the line, but he’s still having fun in fighting his way.

So I liked this episode because it was just so chaotic. Like, everything Luffy did in the episode was so fast and silly and it showed off something really good. It showed off Luffy having a new set of powers he was unfamiliar with and having him slowly master how they worked in the fast and chaotic fight environment. Luffy had died and was resurrected with abilities several times stronger than what he had before. His movements, the bouncing at different heights and sometimes falling on his face, the weird jittery moments and the struggling moments are all him learning how to use his new powers and become proficient in them. Not too mention I feel like the sudden change into the Awakened Hybridness of Nika pushed in that new will that Zoan fruits tend to have and that's another thing that Luffy has to accept and take in. Which is also why I feel like the next couple episodes will be a little more calm for Luffy, still chaotic and silly, but he's going to have more control over his new body, his new powers, and the added personality bits that Nika instils.

They finally let Mayumi Tanaka go super saiyan! 🎉 I don't normally watch the anime but decided to watch this episode because I knew it was going to be a big deal. I have to say, since I don't have to deal with the pace killers and flashbacks on a weekly basis this episode was really solid for me, I imagine because I don't have to deal with the flashbacks and reused animation weekly. Jumping to Hiyori definitely felt out of place but the events definitely felt more impactful than their manga equivalent imo. The voice cast really did kill it though. Every line was oozing with emotion. Nana Mizuki genuinely sounded on the verge of tears while delivering her lines as Hiyori, and my god Mayumi Tanaka what a legend.

I was honestly really disappointed with this episode. I didn't really like the reused animation + flashbacks then how Hiyori took up half the episode. Then on top of that, the hype G5 received for the past year really had my expectations high for this episode just to get like 2 mins of Luffy vs Kaido. Before anyone says it, yes I am aware 1044 had only a few pages of G5 being shown but because of the hype for the past year I just expected more...at least 5-7 mins at least... I honestly feel like they should of either made this a full G5 ep or have the Hiyori stuff be first (instead of the middle of the ep) which is then followed by all of the G5 stuff. This way it wouldn't have intruded on the moment while also being paced a bit better at least to me. Hope the next episode is much better.

I agree. I don't mind not having a fight in the same episode, because that's how the manga was presented. But they reused a lot of animation. The problem is that you cannot really adapt one chapter in one episode, because then you need to put a lot of filler. There wasn't filler per se in this episode, but they had to reuse the same animation for what it felt like an eternity. And the hiyori stuff was just painful to watch

The chapter had three pages of Gear 5 and six pages of Hiyori, it was always going to be a similar adaptation. Honestly, we got more Gear 5 than I was expecting and I was not disappointed -- but If next episode is filled with flashbacks and filler, THEN I will be annoyed, as 1072 is adapted from a manga chapter that is literally entirely Gear 5 vs Kaido.

I am such a huge fan of cartoon physics and tropes (or more specifically, western animation tropes that originated primarily in the golden age of animation), so seeing Gear 5 be brought to life with such gorgeous animation was truly something to behold. Also, that one frame of Kaido's derpy face is my new favorite frame of anything from One Piece.

She faces the man who has caused her and her family so much suffering and as she watches him die and says “the dawn will surely come” it transitions to luffy bein goofyyyy and he can do everything he wanted to doooo and we get the iconic joyboy shot ! it’s a really great way to weave together the themes of freedom in both stories
