Ironically it somewhat restricts the author. Cause at the moment it seems like there are not really any major drawbacks to using G5, so luffy has no reason to not go use G5 and conquers haki when facing a tough opponent. But we see in egghead when facing Kizaru luffy literally only uses conquers when G5 is about to run out.

My favorite wacky moment was when Luffy was fighting Crocodile and drank all the water, but due to prior injuries had some water leaks causing Robin to laugh pretty hard. It was probably the first time in a long time for her to genuinely laugh like that too given her history.

@@dflowers6771 Then what would he beat him with? His butt? People like you always take that sentence out of context. Luffy's fighting style is punch and kicks. So of course that's what he would do. And unlike Super saiyan and all that, Luffy's gears use his ability to make sense. They all either have drawbacks or clear weaknesses too, unlike most shonen transformations. If you think that's boring, then it's because you're another kid that loves edgelord transformations where laser beams goes brrrr and main character destroys the opponent's face. Which Luffy has done without any of that ages ago.

At first I thought Gear 5th was kind of an asspull and didn't know whether I liked it or not, but honestly it's crazy how well it fits. We saw at Marineford that anger or sadness wouldn't be the trigger for a crazy power up, and while I can see why some don't like it, the fact that Luffy's peak is the epitome of joy genuinely makes me so happy.

It honestly fixed a lot of issues I had with Luffy's powers. Gear 3 made no sense. Even in world people commented on how inflating the bones in his arm wouldn't make his punch stronger. But it did.... because he thought it did. It was the imagination power already working.

You know now that you mention it, most of the characters that we've seen awaken their Devil Fruit powers were confirmed CoC users, and we haven't really gotten any other explanation for how one awakens their power. Maybe that's one of the conditions for it?

One of the reason Gear 5 worked against Kaido as well was that for the entirety of Wano, Kaido tried to break Luffy’s will. The minute Luffy went gear 5 the “possibility” of that happening went out the window. How could he break that level of freedom/will?

The thing about Gear 5 is that it perfectly embodies One Piece, silly but strong, simple but deep and most of all fun. Just like Super Saiyan is the perfect transformation for Dragon Ball and wouldn't work as well in One Piece, Gear 5 is also the perfect transformation for One Piece, which wouldn't work that well in other series, but because it's One Piece, it does.

You mentioned that gear 5 is presumably just pure devil fruit powers and no haki, however Kaido actually states in chapter 1045 that Luffy does naturally use conqueror and armament haki in gear 5. Direct quote: "What does all of this mean?! He turns all white... He uses the colors of armament and the supreme king... And can transfer his powers to other things?! I've never seen such free-wheeling combat before!!!" It seems to me like Luffy's newly attained freedom also gives him natural use of haki without needing to even make a conscious effort to activate and use it.

The haki is not innately a part of the fruit's powers it's just that to awaken any devil fruit general the user's mind AND body needs to catch up to the fruit, so to awaken an insanely powerful mythical zoan like this you need to be an expert haki wielder, similar to how zoro needed to learn how to let all his haki flow into enma to master it luffy's haki mastery allows him to get the most out of his fruit powers

I mean it would make sense because Haki is use of willpower and for Luffy to achieve and execute G5 successfully means that he would need to have complete control over his willpower, bend it to his 'will' and that is exactly what he does in that form, being a combination of willpower and 'Gum gum fruit' so to work, he combines imagination, the fruit he has and his willpower! Just got a thought about why Oda pictures Imu as black figure without a lot of details. What if Luffy is given a cartoon magic is to _paint_ cartoons and fill by it's power manga pages (giving us fun), where Imu is painting pages with pitch black, basically taking fun away. From this point of view - Gear 5 is a pure briliance.

I wasn’t even really surprised the first time I saw gear 5th appear in the manga, it just fits right in. This Gear really encompasses what this manga is and was always about and while the overly goofiness could appear weird for the majority of people, that Goofiness was always a core theme of One Piece. I would say it’s power creep done right. A normal power up like a better version of gear 4 wouldn‘t have done the trick for me, it would just be kind of basic dragon ball logic.

I, personally think the Gear 5th form for Luffy suits him perfectly. Why...because he's a naturally wacky, zany and goofy guy; compared to his more serious opponents. When you can't fight someone THEIR way, it's better to do things they would never expect. Which is why I've stayed with One Piece longer than any Shonen anime out there, to be honest. While Luffy, as a protagonist continues to develop odd new abilities that seem out of left field to some. It's certainly better than the stale and derivative nature of Dragon Ball's current run, where they think being a god makes you the most powerful being in the multiverse. As Kratos of Sparta has shown us, even Gods can be killed if you know how

While Gear 5 was something that really broke the mold of what a PowerUp could be, Advanced Conqueror's Haki was the complete opposite. Not only is it absurdly powerful in the traditional "Now I hit harder!" way, we are never sure when someone is or isn't using it since the only visual cue we have is the lack of physical contact, and not only is that identical with "Advanced Armament Haki" isn't even that consistent, so unless a character tells us to our faces that it's being used, we're left to guess.

I really liked the idea of Advanced Conqueror's as like the final step to boxing with folk like Roger. I think it makes sense and really beautifully explained the whole sky splitting phenomenon. But like you said, it's so inconsistent. Luffy probably should have been able to knock out Kizaru or at least Lucci without G5. It seems like the LEAST physically taxing move in Luffy's arsenal (bro has more Conquer than he does Armament) so he should be using it all the time but he's not because of plot induced stupidity.

I take that quote from Oda in a very narrator voice manner. He introduced Kaido almost 500 chapters after the conclusion of Skypiea, which lays down the first inkling for Joyboy, the Nika Nika fruit and Gear 5 with it. So I definitely see that quote as a wink to the audience, letting them in on the fact that what was coming was not by any means your normal shonnen power up.

Personally, growing up watching Tom & Jerry and Looney Tunes, I loved the direction Oda took. The absurdity of it all is just so wacky and entertaining. One thing I've always liked about One piece was seeing the exaggerated expressions and motions for comic effect. It's strange to see it so prominent in a fight scene but like you said, it's so fitting for Luffy of all characters. I'm here for it!

Its not really. Luffy an Zoro are not rivals and did not start off as enemy's, dont really argue with each other, Vegeta often doesnt take the battle seriously enough and leads to bad consequences, Zoro does not do this. Luffy is for sure inspired by Goku but Zoro is not like Vegeta at all. The only thing comparable to Vegeta is a dark attitude, but Zoro is far nicer, and they fight the second strongest enemy.

you had me in tears because this is how i would explain why i love the series so much, everything oda said was right and im glad he enjoyed drawing gear 5 because we love it even more knowing that. At 14:00 it brings back all the memories of watching one piece as a young teen either laughing at the goofy ideas luffy comes up with or when he finally gets serious and shits on a guy who commits mass murder, cause's mass slavery, piracy and more all because some random girl gave him food. gear 5 was the perfect powerup and as a man i can proudly say this show changed my life.

Like Eneru's Mantra being countered by Gum Gum Octopus because LUFFY doesn't know where he's attacking. Crocodile because Luffy used his own blood and sweat. Gear 5th is a clicking fit in One Piece, it is not something used to get out of a corner. Gear 2 and 4 are not powerups, they are adrenalin. Gear 3rd is transferring air from outside the bones to inside the bones.

I think people would have been more accepting of the Gum-Gum Fruit retcon if instead of a mythical zoan Sun God Nika fruit, it was something like 'Human-Human Fruit: Model; Cartoon'. Hell, for all we know that IS what the fruit actually is, and people just misinterpreted the name because Nika happened to be the first one to awaken it.

I think that Nika used to be a character in a cartoon manga/tv show, in the old era. Joy Boy was the first user of the Nika Fruit, because he wished to be Nika or something like that. That would explain why Nika has cartoon powers, he was originally a cartoon. Also the character had gum gum powers, so it's cartoon powers + gum powers.

​@@xeykdeyk It certainly feels like a retcon given the massive plot hole it opened up. My problem with G5 isn't that it's goofy. I really do think it's a perfect power up for Luffy, he's exactly the kind of fun loving idiot toon force is made for. I just hate that we had to rename the fruit for this twist. I think it was very unnecessary and ruins a big part of Luffy's character. My favorite thing about him is that he had this seemingly awful fruit that he was able to make really powerful because of his creativity. I'd much prefer it if this simply WAS what the awakening of the gum gum fruit was, like the reward for Luffy's hard work. Renaming the fruit and recategorizing it to a zoan feels completely unnecessary and opens up the plot hole that Luffy should have been assassinated by CP9 as soon as he got his first bounty. I kinda hate how Luffy became the child of destiny as opposed to the one who inherited the will. It's a subtle difference that's hard to describe why it upsets me so much. Like I said I like the power up, I don't even mind that it used to be JoyBoys old fruit. I just think that calling him the Sun God takes so much away from the underdog persona Luffy's had for so long.

While I didn't need the fruit itself to be retconned, i love the powerup of gear 5. Its perfect for luffy, it keeps the 'devil in devil fruits' aspect introduced early in the series and ties together the joy boy aspect of the story perfectly. Long live gear 5!

Imo, it would've been more fitting if it was just the Gomu Gomu No Mi and Luffy's unique mindset that made it so special, causing the higher ups like the Five Elder Stars to just assume it must be a powerful mythical fruit, when in reality, the true potential was in the user all along, like with all Devil Fruits, making the Joy Boy connection more symbolic than literal. I don't know if this is a hot take or not, but I do hope 5th is the last gear in the series.

Gear 5th is revolutionary in the genre, and a total breath of fresh air that maintains consistency with the central themes of One Piece. I just wish its activation was setup in a more satisfying way: what did Luffy realize that let him awaken Nika? It might have helped to more explicitly show how Kaido was very much alone by his own actions and Luffy was a champion of liberation for all of Wano. That juxtaposition would also fulfill the proclamation that if it's 1 on 1, Kaido will win.

It’s interesting cause I think that he actually aligns himself totally with the fruit moments before awakening. When he’s using snakeman against Kaido he says something in the lines of “I don’t care about your grievances and doubts when you’ve submitted the people of this country to decades of despair”. I think it’s also one of the panels in which the gear5 kanji is drawn as a battle injury in his face.

Aesthetically I love Gear 5, i think it can get really creative and seeing a manga artist take a cartoon spin on a powerup seems really fun and creative Progressively it scares me, because it feels almost too good for it's own good Considering Luffy literally used Kaido as a jump rope, means that now fights can just end anytime It's not turning into a battle of wits and creativity with Devil Fruits, but just in a Bobobo Bo-Bobobo style of fights where Luffy can just decide whenever he wants to throw the rules out of the window and just win already. And trust me i love Bobobo, but it worked there because we always knew Bobobo was just toying with every villain and there was no suspense rather a continuous slapstick In One Piece i fear cuz i feel the suspense and drama of the fights could get more realistic, yes you knew Luffy was going to win, but also you wanted to see how. Now things could be that whenever Oda decides, Luffy can just start using the final boss as a basketball and thrash them for the win. And the only ''limiting'' factor is whenever Oda decides to put Luffy into grandad mode for drama , but the fact it could happen anytime is convenient makes things less interesting Basically fights can pause and end whenever Oda decides, rather than a ''This is it the culmination of the battle comes here'' but instead ''Oh i guess this is the final punch time'' or ''Oh now his powerup is gone, but that was shorter than before i guess it's convenient''

I’m not gonna lie. At the start of this video I had not been the biggest fan of gear 5 and thought it was the start of the downfall of one piece, however over the course of these 15 minutes and 45 seconds you have explained to me and convinced me that if I had gotten my way and had some crazy serious power up I would have quickly gotten bored and it would’ve really been like any other show. So I want to give a shout-out to the KZbin man, I think your story telling and public speaking skills or whatever you wanna call it are excellent. You are very persuasive because you are very well spoken and personable. (especially with the sometimes very funny sometimes not at all funny jokes you make😭). This is why I think JoJo's actually handles the shonen battle manga problems the best, because the fights never boil down to " I am stronger therefore I win" It always comes down to strategy and positioning. There are times where the MC is objectively the strongest character around for the entire part, but they're still in constant danger because their opponents know how to utilize their own strengths and take advantage of the MCs weakness. I wish more battle manga used genuine strategy and had it work, rather than it boiling down to "me stronger me win" My hero was doing good on that front until midoroya learned how to use his quirk effectively, then he just became too powerful and too smart, so now MHA has fallen into the sand trap. You can make weaker opponents threatening, they just need to be smart. It's a lot harder to pull off effectively though, writing smart characters is difficult, especially if they're smarter than the author. It's much easier to just make someone stronger.

The whole Devil Fruit power system is one of the reaons I'm a little conflicted about the introduction of Haki. Sure it's cool, and most of the times, very useful against opponents, but Haki being introduced has pretty much made most, if not all, Devil Fruits completely pointless.

As a silent fan almost since the beginning this video finally made me write my first comment. First of all: This is your best video in you whole library. Not only did you address a problem I had with dragon ball since the cell saga (for me that would have been the best end and Toryama even wanted to do it this way) but with many shonens and even live action shows (Stargate) with the power creep. But you also got me on board with gear five. I hated it until now because it's just so not badass and badass was what I'm used to. I heard the argument that one piece has always been comical but that reason wasn't enough for me to like it especially with the over the top sound effects and eye popping. One piece May be goofy at times but it was badass when it needed to be and boy did it deliver then. But I never brought these two opinions of mine together. You actually changed my mind here. I hope to see more of these great analysises in the future

thank you for this video! what I love about Luffy and the straw hats is that they defy the typical pirate crew even for one piece. “Fame, power, wealth” the traditional criteria for what pirates want to achieve has transpired sooo differently for Luffy and the crew. He jwanted to be the king of the pirates by going on a big adventure with friends, eating, drinking having fun and chasing their dreams and helping other people chase their dreams. It has been such a fun and inspiring journey to see how Luffy would inevitably inherit the will of Joyboy and Gear five is just a fun way to show the peak of Luffy’s fun/free nature as well as how strong Luffy has become.
