What really annoys me about race headcannons about non-human characters is that you need evidence for the non-white characters, but no one would bat an eyelid at why you decided to draw them white. What evidence is there that the My Little Ponies are white people? None because they are ponies. It’s the same for any sort of headcannon outside of the ‘normal’ thing. Like you need reasons to think a character is autistic, but not for them being allistic, you need evidence to headcannon a character being queer but not straight. It makes no sense to me.

For real!! I don't think anyone needs a reason to headcanon a character anyway they want. Yet so many people need a justification if they're not a straight, white person. There is also the opposite where I've seen a good amount of people complain if you do headcanon a character with no race or sexuality straight and white, but it's still a lot fewer which is sad because it's not exactly a small amount. And THEN you add on people being mad if you don't make that character with conventionally attractive traits because lord FORBID any character be different It's all ridiculous

Tbf, the norm of any society will be the projected norm of the medium. Like anime is Japanese, it's assumed the majority of anime characters are Japanese. But a lot of americans project them as being white until someone explains that, and sometimes even after (That whole Sailor moon argument, for example). It's not so much racism or anything like that as much as it is the norm. If someone went outside the norm, then they did something..... let's say "unusual", and so therefore you end up trying to figure it if it's that "unusual" thing. But that's usually only if you kinda make them think in the realm of race. If the character isn't human, unless a kid was raised to see race in everything, they're not going to see race in a horse or a hedgehog. If they are an artist and they choose to draw them as humans, they'll usually reflect themselves onto the character. The only exception are racial minorities may have more range, depending on their living situation, because while they are.... black, for example, the norm in their sphere may not be, and so you get some black and some of the racial norm of their sphere.

@@heavennunya809 so you think the norm can’t be racist? Racism does exist at very large scale, so that will also be present in media too, especially if there are racist people making media. And also there are people who have explicitly racist views and project that onto media they watch (happens all the time, oddly enough, happens to a lot of anti-racist media). If this has nothing to do with bigotry, why are people mad about it? Why do people feel the need to attack someone who drew a character as fat and black, there’s a good chance that’s what the artist is too, so that’s normal to the artist. I’m trying to say that people attack what’s outside of normal, so maybe don’t coddle people who refuse to see anything outside of their experience as normal. There are very many examples I can think of that apply to ‘people being shitty because they think they’re normal and anyone different is wrong and/or bad’.

You're just taking a particular reason for being an *sshole you don't like as being more special than any of the others. Someone who shits on an artist for drawing a Pinkie Pie white is just as much an asshole as someone who criticizes her for being black. Same with skinny and not skinny. Are black people bigots when they do it? Sure they can be, but not always. Same with white people, so why are we assuming this is about bigotry? Why don't we assume it's not about bigotry in the other direction? Every dick thinks they're in the right to be a dick, doesn't freaking change the fact they're a dick. You're making the action more special than it is. I told you the reason why we don't usually need evidence for why a character is white or skinny (though, there is evidence Pinkie is both, but idc, draw her how you want, have fun!). The norm is the norm for a reason, a norm is inherently about a majority, so if the majority of society reflects themselves onto the character, the majority will see the character as one of the majority until logic points to otherwise. That doesn't justify being a dick to anyone who disagrees, that's a whole separate issue.

To explain why Darwin is black, the short answer is that it is cannon in the series. Cartoon network has only shared artwork of darwin where he was black, they only hire black voice actors, and in a post for black history month, they included him. Its less of race-coding and more of a cannon fact that is often overlooked.

If someone's headcanon doesn't actively contradict anything established about the character, or even in cases where it does but doesn't hurt anything regardless, there's zero reason to be upset. It doesn't change the source material and shouldn't ruin your enjoyment of it.

Exactly! I tell people all the time that even if a hc does interfere with canon, people shouldn’t be discouraged from having that hc, and apparently that’s an unpopular opinion in fandom?? I don't know. I have seen many times when someone's headcanon doesn't come to be that they can get irate and get very vocal about it, to put it mildly. A headcanon can easily turn into a wishlist for the writers if the show is still active.

The vocal minority is always going to be the loudest which Is why these cases blow up as it's bat shit insane that it actually happened. Fandoms as a whole are such a large group I wouldn't let a couple sour apples completely ruin the experience for everyone.

Yeah exactly. I'm quite the canon loyalist myself usually because I think of fictional characters like actually people with feelings (I don't actually believe they are I just think like that when I'm attached to them). I feel like some people are like "well they're fictional, they can be whatever I want them to be!" And I've never understood that. Just make an oc at that point smh. But I've learned that in the end it doesn't matter. If what they're doing bothers me, which it normally doesn't very much, I just don't interact and go find something else. This is why Hasbro made them non human color in Equestria Girls, to avoid any controversy around the ponies and how they look Made them generic to sell toys like Barbie or Bratz, and people often forgets Pinkie is amish (i've look everywhere and black amish people do exists but it's minimum) They often draw pinkie chubby, fat or even obese, the excuses are "she eats a lot" and as a chubby person myself that's bad, my middle brother sometimes eats even more than me and he's still skinny, some people can't get fat no matter how much they eat (plus it's a cartoon, so real life logic can't be applied) i just like to think Pinkie can't get fat just like Shaggy so that's why she can eat whatever she wants

Gosh TikTok is terrible, I hate that app because of the needless hate and negativity people spread about literally. every. single. thing. Not really art related but something similar is happening in the MH TikTok community specifically, G3 dolls are coming out with new designs for the G1 character and there's SO much hate for the new Draculaura and lately new Catty Noir. Oddly enough i don't see that kind of hate on other social medias (maybe a bit on Instagram, don't know about Twitter) but i only see TikTok screenshots of people being VILE. Like purely mean. Ironic for a cartoon about accepting everyone's differences, being tolerant and kind to one another (applies to MLP too) So yeah my point is, that's a TikTok thing happening in every fandom. People over there are just being cruel because it's apparently widely tolerated??

As a frequent Instagram and KZbin user who quit TikTok, that's definitely true!! Even though Insta isn't perfect, no-one's called me adopted yet (meant as an insult) so in my 5 years on both apps I've had a better experience than my first couple of days on TikTok. I can see when a character is a latino stereotype, because I'm not from the USA, so my view of race is very different. (Although we actually don't care very much, it just obvious to us that the gringos don't know how Latinos work). But characters that don't have a defined race, like Pinkie Pie, I do think people are allowed to design the human version in whatever race they wish, since Equestria Girls did a Doug and made everybody their pony colors. (Doug also has this race problem, where the main character and his family and his love interest, has normal skin colors, but the others don't, so you never know what race they actually are, and A LOT of guessing).

@@kou7191 Well, Applejack is still orange, they just made her lighter orange, which ends up looking like normal skin. Everyone is a touch lighter if you notice, except for maybe rainbow dash. I assume that has to do with saturated colors on human skin looking off-putting. Like if you look it up, there is art of big mac where they changed his skin to look like his pony form, and it doesn't really look good.

@@heavennunya809 Yeah, I figured it was due to saturation, if she wa actually orange it'd look like a really bad spray tan, but it's still visibly a 'white' skin tone, rather than just light orange, so it makes her seem like the only character with a "normal" skin tone.

@@kou7191 It looks that way because white skin tones are in the "orange" spectrum. They will usually have yellow, orange, or red undertones. Big mac looks kinda "whiteish", but he's very obviously just a lighter version of his normal color. Fluttershy almost looks white too, due the yellow. Applejack's skin is a peach color. Which is light orange. And yes, it's also a traditionally human skin color. It just ended up that way. Idk if you draw, but most artists when they're drawing white people go for a light orange. Sometimes lean into the pinks or yellows, but usually orange.

The clock app just vehemently hates the idea of perceiving characters as anything BUT white/skinny or anything like that alot of the time and it's mad weird. You make your own interpretation of a race less character, maybe drawing a character darker than they are in canon, or let's say it's where the character is part of your rewrite or au? "OMG WHY'RE YOU BLACKWASHING MY FAVE, LEAVE MY FAVS ALONE!!" Like?? Someone redesigned a genshin character, who's based on an Indian goddess and comments were full of "blackwasher" accusations for no more than the fact that she was a darker skinned Indian character. Personally I don't really care about whether you interpret as a different race or mixed or a different body type, as long as you're not claiming to fix them or make them better but tt users just HAVE to let you know how much they hate it and how you're "being racist/ableist". It's a damn dog ring over there, you can't do sht without someone screaming in your ear for inconsequential things. Like of all the problems that are in fandom, drawing a pink horse plus size and black is not an issue, some people just want to be bullies and feel "justified" for it.

There was a comment section full of people explaining how pinkie pie couldn't be black because she's Amish (which isn't even a race to begin with), the bishoujo figure depicted her as white, and how her being black "ruined" her color palette, a genshin artist was being bullied for a while because their cutesy artstyle depicted characters with darker skin colors and was told that they were "ruining" the characters, a tt by the name of nixnaux who literally got official and canon art, whitewashed, and even used slurs under multiple of them who went as far as even to harass actual POC creators for a while. The fact people started telling darker skinned cosplayers that they were "blackwashing" characters who weren't their race. The fact there are several articles talking about the racism and bigotry faced by POC in fandom spaces being so integrated into it than trying to speak up about it is met with ignorance or just straight up being shut down. This assumption that people who want rep in their art are even worse than people who are racist and bigoted in fan space is very funny because you need to believe that alot of fandoms are catered to suit everyone when that's false. There are tons of hateful people in these spaces, and they're more vocal and influential than the average user btching about how someone's white interpretation of a fictional character is. If I'm a hypocrite for pointing out what I've seen and witnessed so be it, but I don't understand this need to go on someone pointing out the weirdo behavior in fandoms and going "oh but what about this-" and it'll be like 5 instances that didn't even affect the OP as much as it affects POC fans. I can remember that Mary lady who edited that person's knuckles art, that time one bad noodle was bothered by someone because of his Scooby Doo art, the zeefixesart fiasco and these are tame compared to the bullshit POC go through in fandom even before people were drawing characters as POC

Headcanons are fine to have, but it gets annoying when people insist it has to be that way. Whether it's black or white, the idea that you HAVE to draw Pinkie Pie one way or the other is just aggravating, and apparently people will tear you to shreds either way. (I've seen people get very crabby and rude about fanart of white April O'Neil from tmnt or Ariel from the little mermaid) Besides, other races and ethnicities have curly hair (people say Pinkie's is textured but I think it can be interpreted either way?) Why not make her Indian, Italian, Irish, Jewish, Hispanic, Latina? I remember my mom having a pick for her curly hair when I was little, and she's plenty white lol.
