with no windscreen, heater, wipers, roof, doors, rear window, etc. Add all of that stuff onto a side by side and the price is $5-19 K more. Then the price differential is much less when compared used items.

I grew up off-roading Jeeps and lifted trucks, I was in the process of building a mild pre-runner ranger when my friend convinced me to go for a ride in his rzr xp4 1000. We live in Vegas near the Mint400 course in Primm so that's where we went. We are absolutely flying, I'm talking 70 mph over 2ft deep whoop roads like butter, I lost my mind... These things have 20+ inches of travel, engine in rear and weigh less than a Geo Metro! A week later I came home with a 2020 RZR XP4 Turbo 1000 with 8k in upgrades. I've owned it for a year now and I absolutely treasure it. It's a pain to trailer it out but WELL worth it. Every ride is like a dream, just floating through the desert at 65+ clearing valleys in a kind of trance you'll never find in a Jeep. Nothing will ever replace my RZR and nothing has ever brought me more peace.

Great coverage of the debate. I recommend a Jeep for more light off roading, but a SxS is great if you actually want to have "FUN" fun. I'd rather have a used truck and a trailer with a SxS than a new Jeep.

So, for someone who has owned 2 wranglers. I now own a truck and a rzr 1k. I love the 1k so much more. I go on the same trails, just a bit faster some times lol. What I do miss is the open road topless driving to the trails or jumping off a road exploring. Now I do believe both have their highs and lows.

OK, I feel the need to comment on this topic. I've previous owned a few Jeeps. I love the Jeep community and currently I miss the snot out of it. SO to elaborate on what you have said. TURN KEY, if you want a purely OFFROAD experience, get a SXS. For the money a SXS is going to give you the best bang for buck offroad right out of the gate. You'll have to get a trailer and tow it, that could be an added investment but my guess is that most thinking about getting a SXS can or already have this issue covered. SO lets get into the JEEP experience. What is the JEEP experience, well it is what he said. You drive to the trail head in your daily driver or not...for me it was/has been multiple times and that is what REALLY makes it special (more on this), you air down and hit the trail and you and your friends are instantly hooked on how badass a Jeep really is!!! You get the offroading trail bug then its all about modding the Jeep until its more trail worthy (but also less road worthy) and then once your machine is this BADASS offroad monster then you start breaking your shit ALL the time. The trails get harder, the repairs get $$$$, the upgrades get more $$$$. Pretty soon you have a trailer queen offroad-only Jeep (oh look, there is that added investment again, hope your tow rig and trailer can hold this pig) that you have a TON of money invested in, and guess what? Its no longer a Jeep. It looks like a Jeep but it doesn't really provide the same Jeep experience that the stock or modifed stock Jeep that you and your friends loved to bang around in and that you got to drive with the top off. You know, the one your girlfriend loves to ride in on those back country roads in the mountains or beach.... SO ask yourself WHAT DO I REALLY WANT or need? Can you get a fun and great offroad experience with a Jeep, absolutely! but it WILL NOT be the same as a high end SXS. Its not even close priced compared. But if you need or only have the money to (many times my case) have 1 machine that CAN do both on a budge,t hence the daily driver aspect. Then get a Jeep and not just any Jeep, a CJ (I had an 85 CJ7, miss it every day!) or Wrangler! Nothing else compares and I've owned 2 XJ's ( that's Cherokee for you NON Jeep people) and a J20 Gladiator (really should have restored this truck). That being said. What would I do now? Well I don't currently need a Jeep as both a daily driver and offroad rig, but I WANT both. I miss having the top off and cruising around, playing in the dirt with my friends BUT I want a hardcore trail machine! I already have a truck to tow with...I plan to get the SXS to play HARD on the trails with and a TJ (non Jeep people this is a 2nd gen Wrangler) for the nostalgia but also have some fun in.

In a sxs you can see more because you can go faster on the trails...if you trailered it to the trails, you know you will make it back home. If you take your Jeep and drive from home to the trail you may not make it back if you break something. What it comes down to is, what are you willing to spend your money on and what is your mission for the equipment you are buying?

Side by side all day. Like it or not Jeep's become a fashion statement, it's very expensive, and very expensive to maintain in the long run. I own an old Jeep love it, don't care if it gets scrubbed and scratched it was made to be abused. New Fiat Jeeps are not made that way. My next toy will be another ATV or SXS.

Let's face it SXS are a fashion statement too. How many people buying turbo X3's and Rzr's and don't really use them to any real extent. They are both expensive and I love them both a lot honestly. It is more nerve racking when you take a newer Jeep out on some hardcore trails I will say that.
@jasonstroman4550

You summed it up and then reinforced it. The side by side is a toy. That is why it’s fun. It’s like comparing legos to building bricks. Ones a toy and is fun and the other is for making buildings. The Jeep is a vehicle and the SxS is a toy. That is the only way to look at it. If you want a toy get a SxS if you want a family daily driver (because you live where you can’t drive the SxS legally) get a Jeep. Or go like @litebrite and have both.

I am going with a dedicated SxS. Is it rock crawling, overlanding/ touring or high speed whoops or super mega ultra mud holes? you have to buy the vehicle for what you plan on using it for. the SxS i see on the trails are going in 3-4 ft of straight MUD SOUP. Most SxS go around 200-300 km on a tank. Jeeps and Tacomas for overlanding go around 500-600 km. Not everyone wants to beat up and offroad their daily driver.

I grew up in a off-road truck community. Friends and family would have a bush truck and a daily truck. I got into a side by side and I totally agree with the idea of it’s a toy plain and simple. I get in my truck and worry about everything. Tires, mud, sticks, rocks, breaking axles and dents. Get into our rzr and I’ll do 80 down a trail and not care when I hit some whoops and bottom out the suspension or smack the a arms into a rock or stump. I’ve rolled it multiple times and we push it back over and keep going. Rolling a truck? End of the day. It just makes sense with the side by side for me

My Wrangler is not a Daily Driver. It has a 4" lift, it has 33" tires. It's a TJ. But... I can take it in a road trip without doors or a roof; I can take it camping or in a pinch I can drive it to the office. (I've taken the Wrangler on camping and off-road trips up to a week long and 600 miles away, with no support vehicle. It's really fun. And living in the eastern midwest, not something I could do with a SxS.) Any trail that the Turbo A 4-seater can go down is large enough for my TJ. I can go anywhere it can, although slower. (Which is part driver; I enjoy a slow roll over an obstacle with exact control and technical driving. But the TJ brings the right foot when needed.) I can probably go places that it can't go, due to the solid axles and the better suspension setup, although slower. The primary obstacle that my TJ can't overcome are the legal ones. The only reason I am even thinking about a SxS is because legal reasons; a lot of the trails around here are limited to SxS only. And I hate that I may need to spend $15K on a less capable vehicle than the one I have for legal reasons. (And to be honest, the SxS that I like is the Roxor. Because I enjoy Jeeping. And it is annoying because it's supposedly about size of vehicle on trail and the newer SxS are every bit as large as my TJ is...) I just enjoy the slower, more technical, more exacting driving style that solid axle Jeeps are built for. Chess over checkers. Nothing wrong with bashing through the trail bouncing off all the rocks and using power to get to where you want to go with a SxS; just not my cup of tea.

@ wow, what an elegant and intelligent response. I do believe the tradition retort is to say "nuh uh! You suc!" And then wander off with my toy. The independent axles which let SxS go faster on easy terrain is what limits them on the stuff Jeepers actually find interesting. So yes, if speeding down easy trails fast is your thing, a Jeep is not the vehicle for you. I don't want to go fast. The funnest time I've ever had in my Jeep was a day when we spent 8 hours driving less than a mile of virtually impossible terrain. You would have never made it. But there was an easy trail right next to it that you could have zipped by in 2 minutes... but where's the fun in that?

Jeeps and SxSs have different things they are good at. For dunes and high speed desert stuff the SxS is far superior, they can do it right out of the box. The Jeep of course can be a daily driver, and has heat, AC, can be driven on public roads, and still is very capable off road. For my personally, if I lived in Arizona, I would get a SxS at the drop of a hat, here in Wyoming and Colorado, give me the Jeep, or in my case a Tacoma. You also mention just throwing a lift at a used Jeep, that is a very good option in the rockies where most off roading is in the form of rock crawling.

Idk to me people talk about this comparison, it's not really comparable. I go to glamis, ocotillo, and high speed stuff. Jeeps can't do that with out spending crazy crazy money. Nice job on the discussion! I was a dirt biker and snowmobiler for 20 years. I thought SxS were stupid. With medical issues, the cycles and sleds were no longer an option, so I got a SxS. Ah Ha!! I was the stupid one. Wished I would have made the switch so much sooner. Loving the SxS experience in AZ. Ride out the driveway to hundreds and hundreds of miles of trails. So then I bought a TJ and joined a couple Jeep clubs. Looking to ride in all kinds of weather when its just too cold and wet for the SxS. Unfortunately two things happened. 1) I took the Jeep on a trail that was easy on the SxS and scared the heck out of myself. Almost rolled it down a 100 ft climb that was 2WD in the SxS. Got a little sideways and nearly crapped my pants. Open differentials are pretty useless off road. And 2) after two years, I have never been able to ride with the Jeep clubs. Per their pre-ride requirements a) My tires are not tall enough, b) my lift is not high enough, and c) I don't have the required lockers. So my only options with the Jeep are to invest another $14k so it's off road worthy, or stick to boring super easy trails. Neither is appealing. Pretty sure the Jeep is headed for Craigslist.

@@Holden-McGroin everything is overpriced due to demand and willing to pay for it. Aslong as people will pay companies will charge crazzy prices. Look at pick up trucks omg crazzy what people pay for a full size 4wd truck you can buy a home for the cost of a new pickup truck. But if you can afford and want the new truck you'll buy it. Idk what jeeps sale for would never buy one unless older unit new ones look cheaply built maybe there not idk. But you can buy a turbo sxs for like 30g ish. Think I'd spend 50g on a truck before 30g on a sxs but off road there's no comparison you can't go very fast at all boring sore ride. Sxs you can fly still walk straight after a day on the trails. There 2 totally different animals. Sxs more suspension better power to weight. Jeep street legal ac and heat can off road and drive it there and home if it don't shit. I'd rather trailer the thing I'm going to abuse rely on the street legal vehicle to haul home my broken junk or pull it out. I totally agree with you. Back in high school, we took a class trip out to Moab. While there we did a tour on Hell's Revenge on RZR XP 900s. I was not driving but I had the time of my life! I never knew about these machines apart from knowing they exist. They crawled up the biggest things, then went really fast though the more open parts! It was incredible! I also loved the odd yet surreal feelingnof being in a vehicle yet so open to the elements. Then another day on that trip, we rented jeep wranglers and took them to Elephant Hill in the Canyonlands. I had never rode in a jeep before but i had a great time in that too. The jeep performed pretty well. It scraped and smacked its skid plates a lot more than that rzr though. And in the more open sections, we hit the gas a little but it never went as fast as those rzrs did. I had a blast in that jeep though. But I still found myself researching rzrs for the rest of that trip. Today, I own that RS1 that was reviewed on this channel. There is my choice made. But do I hate jeeps? No not at all, despite having zero head room at all unless you are sub 6'. Jeeps have their place and do what they do very well. But at the end of the day, for me a sxs will always win, despite not being able to drive them to work on a daily basis.

I have a split decision. I think the best scenario is to own BOTH. I currently have a Modified Jeep Rubicon and love it off-road and use it as my DD. I don’t want to submerge my Jeep interior in mud water and risk possible electrical problems. That’s why I want to a sxs for the wet swampy type of trails. I use my Jeep for crawling style off-roading. I would use a sxs for narrow trails, deep water crossings and taking it thru deep mudholes. If I break the sxs I can just limp it back to my utility trailer at trailhead and let my Jeep tow it home. If I break my Jeep on the trails I have to rely on someone else towing me out of trails and back home.

THANK YOU. I am in college right now, I am kinda doing a life restart, and I sooo badly want to get into off-roading, have for years. I had never heard of side by sides until recently, I did some research and I was so impressed by all the mods you can do, and I thought it would be a blast, to have as a little toy, and I don't want my daily driver to be my driver. I wasn't sure on coasts, and though I think declaring the Polaris the king is nothing more than brand loyalty, the rubicon I agree does still hail as the unbeaten king, but I can't afford that, and I love how small, light, and fast they are. I want a different experience does the trails. However, I was torn, I almost said, maybe a ranger is a way to go, or maybe a mini jeep, but what sold me, was the front bar. Also, I was amazed at how fast they go. Now I doubt I will ever afford the New Can-Am Maverick X3, but maybe the trail in a few years, maybe even then 11k is about what my minivan cost, so I feel this is a pipe dream that will never happen, but it's fun to dream.

I've never met anyone who wanted to go fast in a Jeep, the argument about speed makes no sense. If that's what you want you wouldn't be in the market for a Jeep anyway. They go similar places, but they serve different purposes.

Jeep has HVAC which is main advantage IMHO for hot climates. You can't jump in out and and maneuver a Jeep around the woods and use for work like you can a Kawasaki Mule, Polaris Ranger or Can Am Defender. I want a Can Am Defender Limited with and AC but I see numerous issues with the ac system. The HVAC systems in the Side by Sides are still primitive.

No need to argue about it guys, everyone has different needs and purposes. Coming back from Moab I saw an Overland Jeep build towing a SXS. So when he wants to rip it up at high speed he can. And when he wants to go on long overland expeditions in his Jeep, he can. Best of both worlds. Jeeps are for the people who are outdoor oriented and don't want to conform to the crossover apocalypse. SXS are for people who can afford multiple vehicles and off-roading is a big passion of theirs. Who is actually gonna daily a SXS? Colorado weather is so unpredictable, it's much more practical to own a Jeep. But I mean, if money wasn't a concern, I'd take a V8 Ultra 4 Jeep over a SXS lol. So just be chill with one another, Jeep or SXS...we are all out there to get out in nature and share a similar passion in some shape or form.

Have a bad breakdown in a SxS, loaded it on my trailer and I park it in my garage and scrape up the cash and fix it when I can. Have a bad breakdown in my daily driver jeep. Figure a way to get it off the trail, have someone tow it home($$$ without AAA) then have to rush to repair it and get it back on the road, next time out vehicle won't be run as hard because of bad experience from previous breakdown. Point is SxS are more unrestricted fun than any jeep driven to the trail.

As a land owner; the SxS will cause significantly less damage to the ground went damp, that stat alone can nearly justify one of these. Have a tree fall on a fence in the spring? You won't even be able to get in to fix it with ANY road based 4x4, perhaps with a smaller tractor, if you try you'll tear up significant amounts of pasture/field. And I may well need to go in with a heavier tractor and pull out the 4x4, tearing up the ground even more so. A SxS will get in with little to no harm done what so ever, you pretty much have to work at it to get one stuck. And for those of us are out there on a regular basis, a SxS results in less wear on us as well, gives us more time to get other things done, the fuel savings adds up, even when compared to a small tractor. Replaced a 4 wheeler with one, which are less impactive still, but not quite as much utility.

Ive had a RZR for many years. Thing is it is not capable of long distances, it is limited for road use, it is cold or hot and windy. It is still fun but we are also going to be using a lifted WJ with bigger tires for behind the MH for our run around vehicle and exploring the west. It is hiway capable and has heat and AC and still does a decent off road day of fun. Its just not as fast but thats ok I’m getting old anyway.

This is a very good arguement. I feel jeep has a lot to offer for sure but the thing is if you break a jeep on the trails your walking home. If you use a side by side it's a toy it is ment to get broke and if you break on the trail you walk to the truck an take it home on the trailer. Also cheaper to fix and I can still go to work. This is just my thoughts!

SxS all the way. I had a Wrangler TJ. Sucked as a commuter, and the more mods I did to make it off-road worthy, the worse it got on-road. To be able to keep up with a stock SxS, you have to reduce the one thing that a Jeep has over a SxS...on-roadability. Get something comfy to tow your SxS to the trails...done.

Depends on location and use in my opinion. Since nebraska doesnt have crap for sxs trails or ohv parks, jeep every day. I can have fun around town and in the winter time plus able to still take it out to CO for the trails. If I had a sxs it would rarely get used, heck my ATV hardly gets used. Plus would need a bigger trailer plus SXS would require the garage space vs leaving the Jeep outside in the driveway.

I often think about this topic. I own a 2022 CanAm Commander XMR with glass windshield, plastic rear window, rear view camera, 4 Q-link boxes and a cooler. I think it’s a great machine however for the $28k I often wonder if I would have been happier with a modified used 4 door wrangler. I hardly use my Commander and like many others have said the jeep can be used to drive to and from the trail rather than towing a SXS. For towing I own a 2021 PowerWagon level 2 and it is very capable of off-roading but truth be told I don’t want to destroy it in the woods. So I will either keep the SXS or go Jeep I am still undecided. Maybe the comments in this video will help me make the decision.

This is like comparing a stock car to a mustang. A SXS is a scaled down buggy and does not compare to a wrangler in capability. The wrangler is built with safety and vehicle law constraints that significantly impact what it can do. That being said a wrangler is more practical because it can go on the trails, drive home, to the store and be taken on long trips without being trailered. Also, 30k is approaching used full size buggy territory which come with a real transmission, one ton axels, 40s and a proper transfer case.

Much prefer a fourwheeler or motorcycle over both, but that's just because I don't like being a passenger. I would choose the side by side over the jeep personally because I like to be able to fit in those tighter fast paced trails with trees all around. I am not really one for straight rock crawling, which the jeep does phenomenally, I like the faster paced trails. I also don't mind towing a trailer with toys around because I love trucks and towing so that's not a downside to me.

SxS all day. You can buy a brand new Polaris xp 1000 for sub-$16,000. If you spend that much on an old Jeep you’re still not going to have as much fun off road and you’ll still be more concerned about about banking it off a tree or rock as it’s not going to be near as forgiving. My neighbor bought a Honda pioneer5 and I went riding with them once and now I’m hooked. My 4 yr old son was riding on my quad with me and when he started getting tired instead of having to leave, he hopped in the Honda and we finished out the day.

The bottom line is, your dollar, your desire, your experience. People can argue points to death for and against things, however, at the end of the day, it is YOUR choice. It is fantastic to have different view points when you are trying to make a choice. This does this better, that does that better, etc. WE the people cannot ultimately tell you what is right for you, unless you give us YOUR parameters to work from. You only have X amount of dollars? A 4x4 daily driver would be right. Simple. Because you cannot afford a toy and a daily driver.(and a trailer) OR you live in an apartment with only 1 parking spot or home with limited room for only 1 vehicle dedicated to you. Stuff like that are easy factors to weed out which would be best for you. But you see, you have to know this stuff already. And if those reasonable deductions are not factored into your decision making process, it is important to come to the people to help you make choices. "I want to go off road." Is way too vague of a statement for your advisers to help you along. So I can just say for me, my $ is best spent on something that does a broader variety of tasks in comfort. I don't want to spend my time and extra money making repairs or being at home waiting for the repair shop to call me up and say it is still waiting for parts. Or be crawling in and under my own vehicle doing the repairs myself.(been there done that) So I factor in what has the historical track record of getting people to and from the most remote locations. And bingo that is how I make my choice. In this specific 2 vehicle choice, I would take a Jeep over a side by side. Not because the SXS cannot take you to and from with reliability better or worse, but because the Jeep would be more versatile for me. More comfortable.

They each carry 4 people but the SXS is a lot easier to get into the back and the Jeep is not. The Jeep will carry me 500 or a 1,000 miles from home before I hit the trail and the SXS will not.
