Solo is done using Talkbox guitar effect 15:05
@aaronmueller1560 Жыл бұрын
As a further explanation of this, a talkbox essentially has the guitar sound traveling through a tube into the guitarist’s mouth/throat. A mic then picks up whatever sound is coming out of the mouth, so the guitarist can form shapes with their mouth to affect the sound and make it sound like the guitar is talking.

At its core I understand this to be a love song. At the beginning of the song they talk about all the riches they have, but how they'd give it all away if it meant not losing "you" for even one more day. Later on they talk about how they were dark, but that person made them good. At least that's my interpretation. This was one of the songs we used at my wedding 😊
@fcleffox3 ай бұрын
@dustinbrooks9060 I know I'm late here, but that is 100% the surface meaning! Tool songs always have layers, and everyone can see a reflection of themselves in surprising ways, but this is indeed a love song. You've got the first 2 verses covered, which helps understand the rest. She's his fulcrum, damn his eyes if they should compromise his relationship with her. If wants (infidelity) and needs (love) divide me, I might as well be gone. He'd wish it all away to make sure he has even just one more day! EDIT: I'm an idiot! It is love, but another comment reminded me of a fact I had forgotten. He wrote this regarding his son! Still definitely love, but that of a father, not a lover.

Every time I watch someone react to Jambi, it brings tears to my eyes. Maynard's musical poetry is "moisturized" with powerful metaphors. The loss of a family member or a friend often makes people wish they could give up all their earthly possessions just to have them back in their life. But I love the reference to worship of the sun. I can see the sun, and I know the sun exists, and it doesn't judge, unlike all other gods that I've been told to believe in. Live for the day in peace, love and unity with your family and friends. Tomorrow is not promised to any of us.

It almost sounds like a voice because it is almost a voice. It's called a talkbox. Peter Frampton is famous for using it. Also bon Jovi's guitarist richie Sambora in slippery when wet used it.
@joechurch7 Жыл бұрын
The earliest incarnation of the talk box was invented by Jazz steel guitarist Alvino Rey in the late 1930's and later adopted by Pete Drake in the 50's. They weren't commercially available until audio wizard Bob Heil made one for Joe Walsh to use on the song rocky Mountain Way. Bob showed it to Peter Frampton and Peter had to have one. The Frampton Comes Alive album brought the device to the mainstream.

The solo uses a talkbox, which is a guitar amp that send the sound through a tube that you stick in your mouth. Then you can move your mouth like your talking, and it changes the sound accordingly. Then you use a vocal mic to capture that sound. Ecfectively, the guitar replaces your vocal chords. So that's why it sounds like the guitar is talking. Adam isn't really saying anything, though. He's just mouthing through different vowels.

This song always hits me hard. It is basically a love letter to his mom who he lost. Just the emotions that the lyrics evoke alone gives this a special place for me. If you listen to the lyrics, he talks about how he clawed his way to get where he is, and when he was close to losing his struggle with his inner darkness, his mom was able to lift him up and bring him back from the brink. He also goes on to talk about how even as she was dying, she never lost her faith, and that helped him to continue his fight. Throughout the song he is saying that he would give up everything he has if it meant having just 1 more day with her. "If I could I'd wish it all away, if I fought tomorrow and take you away. You're my peace of mind, my home, I said I'm just trying to hold on one more day."

I mean if Tool songs are open to interpretation then I think it's both. It's definitely about a genie, but there's a line between Pee-Wee's Jambi and the lines about wishing it all away, to hold on to one more day. Genies in stories sometimes have a "devil's deal" or "monkey's paw" aspect to them. Genies are jokers and tricksters! To me it sounds like he's talking about a wealth of stuff, when he would give this wish away for more time, so he fell into the genie's trap also I think "compromise the fulcrum" is a Lateralus spiral reference, like he's stepped up his understanding and can see the genie's trick (or joke) for what it is, a gift but also ultimately a bad bargain!
