I remember when I was younger my grandfather (a FFAA programmer) would block stuff from me as a kid. I'd eventually learn how to back door stuff, mask/hide stuff, and work around it. He never got mad. He'd just use another tactic. One day I learned to make my own keylogger script; hijacked his computer and the modem on our personal computer and took control changing all the passwords. He asked me how I did it and I told him thinking I'd be in trouble. He didn't get mad; just asked for access and removed all the safety stuff. A few years later I asked him why and he said he was protecting me until it was apparent I knew enough to take care of myself and there wasn't much left for him to test me on to see if I could work around it, remove it, corrupt it, or repair it. I feel like troubleshooting and learning to manually doing stuff was such a benefit for me.

Hey Linus, I'm the original customer here. I encourage everyone to read my article or at least this comment. I was never locked out of anything due to self hosting many of my own services and many devices run locally only. Just my echos were locked out. All my lights and automations keep on working, we just used Siri or flipped light switches as all my lights can just function as normal lights too. The real reason I went public with this is because not everyone self host (nor should they have to) and I knew I wasn't the only one who's had something like this happen. I wanted to raise awareness plus be able to use all the press to actually get the attention of law makers. I'm just starting on part 2 now of getting law makers on board. I figured it would be easy to ignore just me but if we got some momentum behind this, something could actually get done. I don't care who you are, what you look like, what you believe in, getting your account locked across the board is crazy. It would have been a reasonable step if they just refused to deliver while they did an investigation if they believed a credible threat was present. With regards to infrastructure vulnerability we're actually right now *at peak* with how vulnerable we are, as in the future systems are likely to get significantly more resilient and hardened. We are moving to renewable energy with micro (or at least *more* micro) interconnected grids with *way* more connection points, and we right now have multiple constellations of satellites providing space based internet which themselves too are being specifically built with resilience and redundancy in mind. All this is layered on top of the fact that having resilient infrastructure be an actual government target thing that we are aware of is *a thing* now for many nations, and so active planing is taking place to reinforce this idea

I understand it's a strain on your ressources, but I miss the super long wan shows a lot. Especially in comparison the show (specifically the discussions) feel a bit rushed and the whole atmosphere changes when you are seemingly on a timer. I guess I just don't understand how others use KZbin. I always click on my subscriptions first to see if there's anything new from my favorite channels, then let the algorithm try to find something if there's not. I've never had a video from a channel not show up, let alone a channel disappearing from the feed entirely. Any time I've wondered why I haven't seen a video from a particular creator it's always because they simply haven't uploaded. Do people just subscribe to channels and assume the algorithm will always feed them those new videos first? I can only think people just actually don't know how to use the service. It's like they forget what number their favorite channel was every time they turn on the TV so they just flip through channels til something catches their attention for a few minutes, then go right back to just flipping through.

1:08:48 I would argue that one big reason that livestream VODs have different patterns to regular videos is that they're *super* long. Fewer people will want to sit down to watch a 2 - 3 hour VOD of a livestream; It's likely to contain much more padding/uninteresting stuff/ignorant hot takes than an edited video would. At least when it's originally live you get the experience of sharing it with others and potentially interacting. Add to that that the important topics will be later available in more easily digestible clips on the sister channel.

Metric was introduced in Canada the year I started high school, 1975. It was not taught my entire 4 years but officially Canada is metric. At work we are completely Imperial because our biggest customer is USA. Only Myanmar, Liberia and the US still use Imperial officially but many, many items in the US are in metric as many cars are built jointly by Japenese, Korean and US or Canadian companies. To work on a US built vehicle you need metric tools.

A messed up measuring system... Yep. The US and Europe did do a space mission together, it crashed due to sensors reporting in one system and the computer working in another. I'm an old bloke from Australia and I know that it is 14 pounds to a stone... how many feet to a mile? it is a "totally random" number.

As a former track athlete from the states, it’s usually easier or me to gauge distance in meters, since metric is the standard measurement system for events. I can physically feel when i’ve crossed roughly 1600 meters/1 mile, and can eyeball distance in increments of 400 meters (quarter mile), the standard distance of one track lap

About Amazon - they do the same thing with Audible. They make unsubscribing difficult, bombard with offers and unnecessary shaming prompts, and if you have credits in your account, you lose them by unsubscribing. To keep your credits, you are required to use them to purchase an audiobook or "pause" your subscription temporarily.

I've worked at a company like this and I just left. Yeah, we've seen multiple people make multiple accounts because our site is just so jank ("move fast and break things") that people don't know that to claim the discount, they need to go to one part of the website and not another, but because it's been a while or they have a new device, they end up accidentally making a whole new subscription. Our system often catches this, because this is actually not how we wanted that to go; we needed a unique e-mail and other stuff, but there would still be old people who managed to break the site enough that they'd get it through and end up with multiple accounts unwillingly, while at the same time there would be other people who'd try to make multiple accounts and complain to us when we point out that's not how the service is supposed to work. Inside of these companies, they will hire customer service people who will be genuinely passionate. That is what they're selected for. They really want to help their customers and most of the time, the customers are indirectly complaining about a dark pattern. The stupid thing is; we know that this is the dark pattern, but the pattern ends up being darker than intended (basically; we don't want to make it so easy that a customer could accidentally unsubscribe), but the company has "other priorities rn". Which is corporate speak for 'we know that this is a problem that makes our service look bad, but actually, the entire company is constantly on fire, so just deal with it'. And when the company isn't constantly fighting fires anymore, guess what, then they focus on being profitable, so they kind of want to keep the dark patterns they built up accidentally.

What I have always found funny about which units of measurement places use now is that most places that were once ruled by monarchs and emperors and, possibly, created Imperial units use metric while the US that formed against imperial rule uses imperial. On a side note, all those whatever mm sockets attach to the ratchet on a 1/4 or 1/2 inch square notch.

From my understanding the reason that they still use floppy disk for the nuclear football and for nuclear facilities is to keep it as secure as possible because it is analog and it is hard copy analog it is much more difficult to steal the codes or to make a fake copy or to do anything with whatsoever. Yes it is possible for any country to get stuff for floppy disk however to get the exact look of the distance they use or at least close enough to pass the visual inspection of just having it in your vision then it's still pretty hard to do that considering very few eyes have laid eyes on that particular disc.
