One thing that I have encountered that you guys don't mention is the arrogance of Toyota dealers and the difficulty of dealing with them that fresh in my mind since I just went through it. In my case I have a well ran Chevrolet dealer close by that has a great service department that attempts to get you the best deal they can rather than trying to separate you from as much of your money as possible. My local Ford dealer is a well ran dealership too but my last two Fords have just had too many quality problems with substantial automotive systems like engines and transmissions. The CEO of Ford is correct when he admits that Ford has persistent quality problems. I have purchased or attempted to purchase a lot of Chevys, Fords, and Toyotas since I change out trucks often.

Absolutely. I went to 3 different Toyota dealers. They ranged from horrible to barely tolerable. Basically I was told that there was no way to get or order what I wanted, and that I would have to wait and see if maybe something came availble, if ever. They also quoted me 4K less on my trade (2017 Colorado) than Nissan did. I just brought home my Frontier Pro-4x last night.

My Ridgeline has been great fits 4x8 sheet of plywood with an inch or two to spare (didn’t have to wait on new ranger to do it;). Has more payload than some full size trucks. Another You-tuber mentioned that auto manufacturers fly you out, pay your hotel, provide food. If you post too much negative information, you won’t be invited to future events, so obviously journalists are motivated to be gentle with their product showcasing. I would be curious if reviewers got blacklisted by manufacturers for negative reviews once the vehicles are released and available for test drives etc. Didn’t this channel get blacklisted by Subaru several years ago for an unfavorable review?

I’d personally be interested in a midsize truck because I don’t need a truck all the time but having a bed would be great, and I’d like to park it in our garage. I disagree that this is the “golden” time. The prices are crazy high, and incentives aren’t the best. I also think that more and more will begin doing hybrid or electric trucks which would be great for options. I’ll certainly wait until dealer mark ups are over and there’s better offers. In regards of looks, I don’t need an off roader. The Tacoma looks nice but I think the GMC Canyon is the winner. The Ranger isn’t bad but it’s not memorable and neither is the Frontier. I am excited though to see what Honda will do with the Ridgeline. Great podcast guys.

From a guy that rebuilds engines, turbos scare the hell out of me. The cooling and lubricating systems need to be maintained vigilantly. In a society where we can't trust the common car owner to change their oil on a relevant schedule, these systems are imploding premature. Disable the infotainment screen till an oil change is performed. Seems childish but that's the kind of kid gloves people need to understand the importance.

I owned a 3.5L ecoboost, loved it when it ran good. I bought it used at 50k. I think the problems were due to poor maintenance from the previous owner. I don't think I will ever buy a used car/truck again with a turbo due to unknown maintenance. Poor of maintenance kills turbos engine quicker than naturally aspirated ones.

These midsize trucks are getting so good now. I think Tacoma just raised the bar though. Colorado is great too, but I think Tacoma has it bested by a bit, just because the interior and power numbers. The Ford is good too, but I think the interior just looks a little lackluster, which is strange to say because even 3 years ago, that interior would've been great. It's such a competitive class. Which is funny because 15 years ago it was fading out. Frontier, while going the "old school" V6 route, still is a great truck too. I'd be curious to see an MPG/towing loop with a turbo 4 cylinder GM vs. the old school V6. I think the numbers would be closer than one would think. I just wish Mitsubishi could import their new Triton here (remember seeing the camo'd prototypes running around the USA). Maybe there can be some sort of solution with Nissan (as they are Alliance partners). Can't wait until you guys can get them all of them in one place and compare them. Moab would be awesome.

For new (young) buyers, Both my 90s Ford Rangers and Explorer leaked oil and had mechanical issues. My 83 Ford Fairmont ran just perfectly. My 2016 Nissan Frontier Pro4x has kicked ass and had no problems...simple and reliable truck. My 93 Mercury Villager ran perfectly. My 2013 Toyota Corolla is still running strong. My 2005 Honda Civic has over 200k and still going. My friends early 2000s 4runner is still going strong. If I were a new buyer in the midsize truck market (based on my experience), Id go with a Nissan Frontier or Toyota Tacoma...drive them both before you buy. I woundup liking the Frontier more, but it's really a personal preference. Both are very reliable and that's what counts (for me). I use my Frontier hard offroad frequently (im a geologist)

I think we’re leaving the golden age of the mid size truck not entering it. The last Tacoma and Colorado are really perfect. I don’t want a big screen tv in my truck. I don’t want a turbo… I don’t need a 360 degree camera. None of it is really appealing. I like naturally aspirated v6 that takes regular fuel. No need for premium. Not excited. As someone that was really looking forward to the new 4runner, to see the Tacoma without the front locker is kind of a bummer. That said, I have wheeled my Rubicon next to 4runners and they are quite capable and more limited by approach, BO, D, and ground clearance. So Toyota would have to address all 3 of those in the Trailhunter. The Tacoma didn't, so I am not sure the 4runner will.

Nissan knows how to build a fantastic turbo four or six. In creating a new Frontier engine, there must be a good reason they didn't choose a turbo four. Perhaps they felt a NA engine to be more suited to a work vehicle expected to pull loads for a half million miles? They could have gone the turbo 4 route like all the others with all their experience. Also, Nissan has the goods in-house for an excellent manual transmission fron the previous Frontier and the new Z. They must feel that nobody is buying them these days, or theyd offer one. Sad loss. Nissan made its truck reputation on stout manual transmissions.

I think the ranger raptor is very cool but as I get older I would like more toys in the truck. How come nobody ever discusses the fact that the ranger Raptor doesn't have a heads up Display, sunroof ,rear air conditioning vents Or ventilated or Cooled seats ,in Florida where I am now Cooled seats are Important, I believe these Items should at least be available as an option, If it wasn't for that I probably would have purchased The raptor.

If they offered the manual transmission with no hybrid system obviously a basic 📦 not with all the goofy shit maybe some side steps some mud flaps & some bed lights but no advanced technology 📦 $1850 premium off-road package I don't need the leather heated 💺 💺 the 🌙 roof or premium audio system & multi terrain monitor 📦 $3815... If you could get it basic + manual save another $2800 I'd consider it.

Despite how good the cars and trucks are, I've never liked the Tacoma interior or really any Toyota interior. I am not a fan of any of the midsize trucks decision to go with a turbo 4. I do think the hybrid Tacoma will be a massive hit.

Got rid of an SR5 Taco for a Frontier due to the driving/seating feel and I've loved it so far. The new Taco looks phenomenal but the rear passenger room is still small for my liking. The Ranger Raptor is seriously impressive. They kept a V6 and they have more room than the others. My choice is between the TRD Pro/ Trailhunter, and the ranger raptor.

Ranger 2.3 Ecoboost motors have been relatively reliable, when compared to the car Ford lineup of Eco-Boost motors from the past. 1.5 and 2.0 motors from Ford have put a bad taste in mouths of prospective customers unfortunately. Also, the 2.3 Eco-Boost in the in the Focus RS also had reliability problems.
@jeffk464
@jeffk464 Жыл бұрын
Its an open deck block that was massively boosted for the Focus RS. They were having problems with head gaskets leaking if I remember rights. The 2.3L in the mustang didn't share the same problem because of the lower boost. VW 2.0L is an iron closed deck block and seems to take a lot of boost without issues. I don't know what Toyota's 2.4L block is.
@donE37100
@donE37100 Жыл бұрын
@@jeffk464 Yes, open deck in the early 1.5 and 2.0 motors. I believe the 1.6 is closed deck and does not have the same head gasket or cracked block issues. The RS 2.3 also had more boost applied to it, and also people couldn't help but put a tuner on their's to increase boost even more. VAG 2.0 motors are pretty stout, other than timing chain and intake runner control problems. Toyota sort of new to the turbo game in their non sports car lineup, although they did have a 22RE Turbo pickup in the 80's!!

Ecoboast engines have also had carbon and timing chain issues. In addition, service has become the profit center for manufacturers and dealers, so little focus on long-term reliability/longevity. This and increased complexity for emissions have reversed the long trend of increasing vehicle reliability. RIP ICE.

6'2" Andre bought a new Colorado? Bwahahaha...I predict he will sell it in a year. I sat in one of these and immediately noticed a few things: 1) GM is incapable of making a comfortable car seat...and this is no exception. Always too short on the seat bottom...with thin foam, that is somehow hard as a piece of plywood. 2) NO room. I am 5'11" and these trucks are essentially a 2 person vehicle....try sitting in the back seat with the front seat set to your normal ranges....horrible rear seat back angle....no headroom and your knees will be jammed into the back of the front seat. (This is a problem with all these compact trucks....why call them 'mid-size?') 3) Horrible fuel economy. EPA mpg estimates are worse than my F150 with a 5.0 liter V8 engine by 2 mpg. 20 mpg Hwy on a 4 cyl....is terrible. 4) It is a GM..... Enough said. GM's full size trucks have been plagued by soft cams and bad lifters for years and they refuse to fix the issues.....and their transmissions are sketchy as well. Good luck!

Tacoma - No front locker and doesn't look like it'll take a 17" wheel (18" minimum) have me looking hard at Bison or Raptor. Surprises me how these companies continue to miss the mark. Ford got it pretty right with the Bronco but I'd bet there's a large segment that want a true Jeep competitor in the mid-size truck space - something that can mostly hang with a wrangler rubicon in a truck format. Give us dual lockers, sway disconnect, 17" wheel option (didn't think this would even be a thing), ~12" travel, 35s stock with ability for 37s without mods, 6-8 cyl na options + turbo options with 25mpg+, winch ready bumper.

On a 2wd truck going in a flat line, you'll see the fuel economy. My 2016 tacoma v6 2wd often got 26mpg going from coast to coast in Florida. Once you go to 4wd and add tires, it immediately dumps to NA v6/v8 labels. It can already be seen with the Tundra fuel economy people are getting.
