First off, at no point in its history was Liverpool majority Irish or from an immigrant background. But there was a lot of Irish migration to the city during the Famines. I think today about 25% of the population can trace their ancestry back to Ireland. Secondly, I think the actual apathy towards England from some sectors of the community comes from the 70s and 80s when Thatcher placed the city into, so-called, 'managed decline'. Liverpool was left to itself and crime and unemployment rose dramatically.

Just got on to this and thought i need to comment. I'm a scouser and this socialist, Marxist attitude is very pervasive in the city, harking back to the 1911 general strike and the 1980s managed decline my Thatcher. The city was bled dry and on top of Hillsborough when we were blamed for the disaster the rest of the country had a very negative view of Liverpool and everyone had a very negative view of Scousers, parroting the boys from the black stuff. This isnt the case these days but the anger and the scars from that period still remain. While not very articulate this is the reason this man has a chip on his shoulder. Personally I support England and try to look at the bigger picture and am proud of our nation in many different aspects. These days I see Marxism has taken root in the city especially in education as woke ideologies are being pushed in the classroom, trying to indoctrinate future generations. but this all stems from the policy of managed decline that were were subjected to which pushed people to socialism. If it wasnt for New Labours investment in the city and the granting of free education during the 90s and early 2000's a whole generation, my generation would have been lost and the city would be a complete disaster. Now we have bounced back and were voted capital of culture and we have new investment and the city center is doing well, but this man is obviously from a generation of young people who were bitterly affected and even he doesnt know exactly why he has the hatred he does, but its plain to see. A lot of the scousers in Liverpool do in fact have national pride, it is coming back but its along road. It doesnt help going on national radio and spouting off though. Marxism isnt the answer though and it worries me how pervasive it has become because of our past and how the radical left are latching on to it in order to ride the wave of socialist sympathies in the city. We need to engage with the rest of the country now, stop booing the national anthem, be proud of our team and institutions to stop this woke nonsense from becoming the norm.

John Ruddy I'm a proud Englishman but if someone else isn't it's their business. What I can't stand is the hypocrites like former snooker player and Everton supporter John Parrott, he was on a channel 5 sports programme years ago called "Under the Moon" and was asked about the England football team and said "I don't give a hoot about them". He was happy to pick up cheques playing for England in the world team snooker tournament though. I am Liverpool Born & Bred 59 years of age ... we can not deny that we are English as it says so on The Map. Yet we have a sense of integration with Ireland and Wales because of our proximity and we love The Scotts as well ... Our accent is completely different from the rest of the people in The North West of England. We have a strong belief in unity and support for each other and our politics is on the left. We have a welcoming outlook on people (many people come to Liverpool and stay!) In 1974 we left Lancashire and became Merseyside as we live on the banks of The River Mersey. So Yes we live in England, but we Are Not typically English ! p.s. something I would like to add ... in regard to International Football teams, I support England, Ireland, Wales & Scotland ... when we meet, I just want the best team "on the day" to win!.

My feeling and experience is the great majority of Scottish-born Celtic fans do indeed support Scotland but many also support Ireland either as their first-choice national team or second-choice national team. I'm an Irish-born Celtic fan and support Ireland and then Scotland. The SFA and Hampden was felt as a cold place for Celtic fans and players in the last century, but that is no longer the case this century. I always fervently want Scotland to win unless they play Ireland and then it is a friendly rivalry.

Then the attempted so called managed decline of the city by thatcher in the 80s. We’re treated like second class citizens wherever we go in the country.
