I owned an 06 V6 from 30k kms to 140kms. I off-roaded it frequently and the only non maintenance issue (oil changes and brakes) were a coil recall (no failure, just preventative), and a noisy (no failure) rear hatch closing motor replaced under warranty. Our 06 Jeep Commander has cost us much more. I think the launch years had bugs which were misty worked out by 06. Best car I ever owned. Never left me stranded.

Stuff stuff and More stuff It was a mandatory buy back because there was no fix for the 1st gen 3.0 diesel engines. The 2nd gen 3.0 diesel they came up with a fix for the emissions cheat.
@dzelpwr
@dzelpwr 5 жыл бұрын
@@EarthRover, wrong on both accounts. Check out the VW Court settlement website and read carefully. Not only is there a fix for all the first gen 3.0L TDIs but the buyback was in no way mandatory. Out of all the engines involved in the scandal (including both the various generations of 2.0L 4 cylinders and 3.0L 6 cylinders) the only one to NOT get approval is the "Gen 2" 2.0L with MANUAL transmission only. The automatics DID get approval. The Gen 2 engines were found in only the 2012-14 Passats. A pretty small number of engines. They had a fix proposal that did not pass and VW thought about making another proposal, but after seeing how few of them were sold deemed it not to be worth the effort and expense and dropped it. All other proposals passed on the first try. With that having been said, I have a customer who owns a 2013 Passat TDI with manual transmission... IN California, no less. He still has his car even though there is no fix for it. The wording of the agreement was very consumer friendly. You can absolutely keep your car and keep it unmodified, you just don't get any kind of monetary compensation. Obviously, the monetary compensation was so absurdly high that it was difficult for most to say no to. THAT is the reality. The buy backs were in no way mandatory and there absolutely is a fix for even the earliest 3.0L V6 engines.

@@brandondannys-menary3678 VW offered to buy back your car, based on year and mileage. You could keep your car (with the new emissions modification) and get some cash from VW, or completely sell it back for the full offering amount. As an example, a 2013 TDI Jetta with 80K miles would probably got you $24K.

My son and daughter-in-law leased the "Car of the Year", 2000 Toureg. It was the V6 model. It was gutless and achieved on 1 MPG better gas mileage than the V8. The car spent most of its time at the dealership, due to endless quality issues. Then...the right front wheel, along with the brake assembly fell off while driving in town. Needless, to say, they hated that vehicle. Now, it wasn't the top of the line model, but it wasn't exactly inexpensive. The dealer experience was awful, parts were difficult to get, as well. Personally, my experience with VW service soured me on the brand in the late 1970s.

When it's healthy, and functioning correctly, that thing treats everything like it's seen it a 1,000 times over before and it scoffing at the idea you'd ever assume it would find it a challenge. Also gets bonus points for being the most likely to make Jeep Wrangler fanatics cry or get pissed off at it for dominating the trails over their vehicles.

I'll add a little anecdote from a friend and fellow technician. This guy has been a die hard VW fanatic since he was a kid, technician working on VWs since the 80s and eventually other makes as well. A friend of his who was working at a Toyota dealership in his area (St. Louis-ish) was showcasing either the new 4Runner or Land Cruiser, not sure which, and they had amassed a number of competitors' products to showcase how superior Toyota's 4WD/Off road prowess was. His friend took my friend aside and confided in him "Since I know you're such a big VW fan, I'm only going to tell you this. We had a Touareg in this comparison group as well initially, but it was too good. We had to make that one go away." That was a story I heard over a decade ago and for whatever reason it stuck with me. Now I own an early Touareg myself and am starting to scratch the surface at its capabilities off road. And enjoying every moment being in the thing. Fantastic on road as well. Really is an off road sleeper that also happens to be amazing, quiet and comfortable to drive on road and at speed.

I have owned a 2002 & 2006 Touaregs. On asphalt, it is fast as hell. The interior in nicer than a Land Cruiser from 2000's. The electronics are usually the biggest complaints. Kind of like a "check engine light" won't turn off, which most Ford trucks do from then. My biggest complaint is the VW dealership would not install a towing hitch, so I followed a video on KZbin and did it myself.

I had a new 2017 R Line plus in the UK for 4 years (80000 miles) lease car. I off road Ed it everytime I left and returned home in the Welsh mountains. I also drove it to and from Wales to Southern Spain 14 times. It had three longlife services 20000 mile intervals and apart from tyres and brake pads, nothing went wrong with it. It was reasonably economical on fuel even when full to the brim with musical equipment going back and forth to Spain. Performance was amazing and off roading was way better than my terribly unreliable Range Rover Vogue L322. I have had a fair few off roaders and other cars and hire a lot. The Touareg was the best experience I have ever had by a country mile and I would have bought it off the lease company if I could. My next car will be another Touareg. I'm currently driving my father's Tiguan which he left to me when he died. He bought it new in 2009 and apart from a broken coil spring, that has always been reliable and quite a fun little softroader to have as well.

I do want to say this in regards to the “problems”. I have a Cayenne 955 which is basically this SUV. While it’s going to be a bit more costly to maintain, it’s not exactly “break the bank” money here. Especially for the base model V6. These SUVs are wonderful and are not too bad to work on yourself. Remember these prices are quite high due to the fact that a dealer did it but if you’re able to work on this yourself, it’s honestly a MASSIVE bargain of a crossover. They look, drive and feel nice. To anyone looking to purchase a Touareg or Cayenne 955/957 be aware of the center shaft. They tend to go around 120k on ALL trims. If it’s been done, you’re in for a wonderful ride with these. You will love your Touareg/Cayenne... minus the MPG.

As long as you don't mind the maintenance that comes with a 10+ year old German car, they're awesome. The VR6 was a bit wheezy in a vehicle that heavy and didn't get much better mileage than the V8. But with the lockers and a good set of tires, it is very capable. And the reason you're probably finding a bunch of problems, and then very few, is because VW was getting eaten alive on warranty work with the Mk4 series of cars. Window regulators, coil packs, random electrical gremlins, Bluetooth that never worked, etc. VW basically fired a primary parts supplier and went elsewhere. So you may have put 3 sets of coil packs in your 2003 1.8t Golf, but after they started coming from a different supplier, they worked great.

Honestly surprised it did so well but considering it has a rear locker, and electric air suspension raise system.... it makes sense.. I would not want it though because electronics it does have.. but I am also the same way about not wanting a land rover for the same reasons.

You're right, never looked at one, didn't really know anything about it. Surprising package, nicely done. I wish my KL Cherokee had that air suspension... until it starts leaking. ;)

Ah, Tynan's in Aurora; bought out '04 Pathfinder from them in '04. The touareg, the Phaeton, and the Cayenne (and I suppose the A8L) share a lot of parts and yes, I too believe the 1st gen T'egg got a lot of diss because of the cost then (mid 30s for a V6) but then again, the '04s did their best part to imitate a Land Rover (in terms of service bay visits)...so it wasn't exactly off to a good start. Friend has an '06 V8 and it still does well; however, previous owners were not kind to it and it suffers from neglected VW syndrome, meaning the inside, outside, and under the hood have some rough spots; but the things goes like stink and tows a mean 4k-lb camper, but can't pass a gas station...

A used Touareg might be on the short list for a cheap off road suv! Tommy, I also have a great idea for your off road videos. Since we can’t see how steep your climbing why don’t you add elevation and degrees of inclination to your videos?

The Touareg is a great, very capable SUV and I highly recommend it if you independently wealthy and/or work at a VM dealer... also wouldn’t hurt to have a German car mechanic in the family. If not, good luck... it’s a tank but an absolute mechanical nightmare

The tow hooks are in the trunk and can be screwed into the front a rear bumper On right or left side. Also it was developed with Porsche that’s why it’s expensive to maintain.

Wasn't the touareg a totally new vehicle that never existed before 2004? If that's true than wouldn't there be alot of mechanical failures due to the new technology? I've been driving for 22 years and I've always heard people say never buy a new model the first year, wait 2 or 3 years when all the issues have been corrected. Maybe that explains fewer repairs after 60k miles.

like when people say volvo wagons are hugely unreliable, sure there are some that have issues that never got taken care of and are suffering because of that but my XC70 T6 Premier had over 1/4 million miles and has been nothing short of reliable..very minimal servicing all maintenance work.. that being said i do have a code keeps appearing for rear AWD thingy but when i take it off road down and the dirt path and field and play with it get wheels spinning and biting, the AWD is working and computer stops complaining.. so almost crying for more playtime..

I wouldn't take it off road simply because it has air suspension. What happens if that breaks? Suspension problems happen all the time. Many of the mechanical suspension problems you can limp a vehicle home. With an air suspension problem, your ride height drops to less then 6 inches. If you used the max height to get to where you are, then you aren't getting it out if you lose that height. Might be a great vehicle for on road and emergency situations, but not for something that you regularly take into the back country. So not really sure what you are recommending this for.

My dad had a Touareg for 5 or 6 years i think it was a great car, we had zero issue with it And yeah services are expensive, but it's a hight luxury car, it share the same body than the 1gen Porsche Cayenne only the front and rear are différent, i don't know if the internal are the same but yeah it's a Volkswagen, but like a Phaeton, it's not a Beetle

What nobody seems to realize, including the experts who made the video, is that this beast was designed to win the Paris to Dakar Rally in 2004. VW then took the off-road beast and added on the lux accouterments. There is more history outside of the USA.

I disagree with the bad reputation this car has. I've owned the V10 diesel for 6 years now. Bought it with 70k with now over 180k it's still going strong. This thing is a beast and also the most reliable car I've owned to date, and this includes Toyotas, Mercs, BMW's and Mazda(worst cars in the world). Apart from regular services the only issues I've had in 90k miles of Irish country road driving is a prop shaft bearing, blower motor, rear wheel bearing and a gas strut failure on the parking brake pedal. 6 years later and I still love the thing. Considered changing to the 2nd gen but it's nowhere near as well equipped and solid as the good old trusty 1st gen.

So, it would seem VW has it sorted out...all the high technology that promised 4WD in the modern era, has finally come all together. So, just fabricate some full length, full width armor plating along the whole of the undersides...and some full-on traction tires, according to your toleration of tire whine vs. road traction...done & done, pass on the RR, Jeep, etc, you have found your perfect vehicle, & posh at that!
