I've towed a 5,000 lb. camper with no problem and have gotten a bunch of crap in the back of the vehicle with the seats down including a big dresser, full size mattress etc. I don't have the air suspension but this thing does surprisingly well with moderate off-roading and is fairly impressive on snowy roads with just all-season tires.

Great videos! FYI - An old Touareg feature you keep missing is that IT DOES have a tow hook. That eye shaped screw thing to the right of the spare tire can be screwed into 4 different points on the vehicle (two on the front and two on the back) as needed to tow you out of a jam. There's a smaller metal piece beside it that "unlocks" the panels to access the tow hook points. Learned that from tow truck driver last winter after owning mine for almost 10 years!

I wheeled a Touereg around Moab for about two years. They are amazingly capable and fun. With all the lockers and black box magic, with a light off-road tire, the Touareg will scratch and crawl its way up anything. The Touereg’s two off-road limitations are that 1) they have very little suspension articulation, so In any serious terrain, you will have to get comfortable driving on three wheels at times. But, it’s a legitimate technique, and it’s easy to learn, fun, and more stable (safer) than it sounds. 2) The Touareg has pretty good ground clearance, but it often isn’t enough to get over things. You will need to be comfortable scraping or bumping bottom pretty regularly. Be gentle, careful, and smart and it’s not really an issue - the Touareg is tank if you don’t abuse it. As you would expect, put some light off-road tires on a Touareg, and the German engineering makes them a blast for higher speed off-road fun. I drove mine pretty hard around Utah until I put into four feet of water in one of the holes in this video and killed her. (I now wheel a modified 2008 Lexus GX470, which I can’t rave about enough. Google GXOR if you want to learn more). But a Touareg can be a fun choice.

@@Spinal2111 The G Wagon doesn't need it. The Mercedes ML and GL from the same period also had 3 locking diffs with an off road Pro package. It also had a disconnecting sway bar. All the Germans apart from BMW was doing this with their SUVs at the time. When they realised most people never used these things they stopped offering it in newer models. With Mercedes you can still however get their SUVs with an off road package which adds underbody protection and locking diffs. However this is market dependant and probably not available as an option in the US but it is in Europe. They test their normal SUVs in the same off road courses as the G Wagon. That's why even the new GLE has suspension which bounces to get you out of sand. I used the two fuel pumps from the Touareg in my 04 Porsche Cayenne Turbo. All the same chassis goodies, air suspension, high and low 4, variable locking diffs, and 450 hp. In fairness, I don't think I've got descent mode. And a pretty capable towing package. Spin your own wrenches or pay. Oh yeah, when you air down the tires, you can refill them with the air line take-off under the passenger's seat. It taps into the air suspension pump to feed a fill hose.

I have to say that my father owned a 2008 Touareg and it was a briliant car, and a very popular one too. In Israel the Touareg outsold the Mercedes ML, Land Rover Discovery and more, even though it was more expensive than the others, costing more than 500,000 ILS (which is 140,000$, due to the massive taxes in Israel)...

logan holmberg it can be expensive to run compared to an altima. Brakes and rotors F+R are close to $1k oil change is about $120, it's a heavy car so it'll go through tires and brakes quicker than other lighter vehicles, and it can have it's electrical querks. If you're semi handy and you find a good independent shop (NOT the dealership because they generally gouge you) you'll be just fine. I love mine.
@m-at-the-w1425 жыл бұрын
Rod Martinez hey, did you use the factory holes for the recovery points or what did they do to put in the custom ones. I really want to put recovery points on mine. Also, what kind of tires are you running? I'd like to run a 32 inch wheel like they do in the video, but I don't want handling or right now is to suffer. Currently running the Perelli scorpion's with a slightly oversized tires are at 30 inches overall.

@@loganholmberg2295 The maintenance is not cheap. Its best if you can fix yourself; however things to watch out on are: 2005 4.2 v8 138kmi. -alternator replacement (requires engine removal due to location)$1k-2k depending on what shop -timing belt replacement (you have to use the timing bar. Engine valves are close tolerance) price varies (look for audi mech) same repair procedure. -valve ticking on start or idle(cold start): this is often mistaken for bad guides on cam chain. I have found that the real issue is two ea. Check valves under the intake manifold that hold oil get stuck open/stop working these are for lubricating valves. make sure to replace them as they can get potentially worst. This is a simple DIY but you need to be mechanically inclined. Will set you back prob 200 bucks if that(assuming all gaskets including top oil filter fig 8 oring-which is also prone to leak; get replaced. -electrical issues also a problem (mine has not had issues in this category however..) -tires wear out fast so spend money in this category! Buy good tires or they will not last. Those listed above are about the worst; mine has not been too bad. Other then the generic wear and tear On the VR6 model or V10 its a diff story. I cannot speak to those two I own a VR6 GTI and let me tell you the timing chain replacement on that thing is insane!!! So i would stay away from that on a treg.

@@mountainmanjim6366, the WK2 does look good, too. But, the Touareg is also VERY comfortable to drive and has impeccable on road manners, too. Also, with the WK2 that has air suspension, what's the max height vs. the Touareg? I had to look it up. WK2 max height, 10.7" Touareg? 11.8 on its stock tires. More than an inch above the WK2... then put the taller tires on, as TFL did, and they've got more than 13" of ground clearance. Though finding a VW mechanic who wants to work on these and understands the ins and outs and quirks well, that is the challenge.
@m-at-the-w1425 жыл бұрын
dzelpwr I agree. I REALLY love the look of the WK2 but after a lot of research, I don't think that it is a modern day Touareg. The beauty of the Touareg is that it's pretty dang good at just about everything. Sure, there may be some SUVs that are more luxurious and maybe even sportier on the road, and some might even beat it off road, but anything that happens to beat it in any one of those categories likely isn't good in the rest of the categories. I love how I can crank it up into max height for some rock crawling, then drop it down into sport mode (which not only lowers the car but tightens up the handling) and effortlessly weave through traffic at 80mph on the freeway on the way home. All while my 4-zone climate control and front and read seat warmers (in the summer. Unfortunately there are no air-conditioned seats) keep all of my passengers comfortable. Oh with that cool and unique terra-cotta colored interior. I'm a little biased, but I love my Touareg The only vehicle that I'm curious might be a new version of it is the range rover sport. Sporty, luxurious, and capable Offroad (although I've never put it to the test so I can't say with certainty whether it is truly the new Touareg or not). It seems like the WK2 is capable off road and has a soft truck like a ride, which is nice, but I've heard it's not very sporty.

The first Touareg was developed at the time Ferdinand Piech was still heading VW. He was obsessed with quality and engineering,and cutting costs was not an option. One of the most iconic cars were developed under his watch,like Audi Quattro,Porsche 911,Phaeton,etc. If you want a proper quality and engineering,and you want VAG product,the one before 2003 is your choice. After that it's all about cutting costs and profits. That Touareg had much more engineering and capabilities,than the ones that follow.
