The argument isn't that graphics don't matter. The argument is pushing for realistic state of the art graphics is most of the times unnecessary and worse than having a solid art direction or being in harmony with the game.

Good work, a well put together video essay. However, don't forget that not only do gamers have different preferences, we also experience games differently, and both our preferences and experiences change not just with age but even just our current mental state. Frankly I think both "yay graphics!" and "nay graphics!" are wrong. A gaming culture missing either side would be a lesser one. That being said, there are many inherent issues with the "yay graphics!" side, many of which are hard limits that will always negatively affect gamers. And the big two problems are that the hardware requirements drastically reduce accessibility and enjoyably, and the time and expense spent on graphics directly take away from gameplay in a big way. The public dialogue that I think should be pushed is that of both balance, acknowledgement that not all gamers want the same thing, and respecting the games and gamers whose style doesn't cater to us specifically. Also, telling shareholders and their corporate stooges to screw off and stop screwing with our culture lol

In my opinion it's not that the development is bad, but the management and the investors make unrealistic demands for the developers, you gotta milk your customers dry so you gotta make sure the store works so they can sell those 30 euro skin bundles and 10 euro battlepasses and graphics 2nd to get those cinematic trailers to hype up the release, the gameplay and optimization comes 3rd and 4th with the mentality that "we'll fix it post launch, we need that christmas release", when veteran devs jump ship and newbie devs are brought in to replace them, the deadlines remain the same. We'll most likely never get a new Fallout game from Obsidian Entertainment as most of the people who worked on New Vegas are no longer working at Obsidian. out of the developers who worked on 2042 not a single soul worked on anything before BF1 and about half of them had 2042 as their first battlefield to work on. the "Back 4 Blood - Summer Game Fest Trailer" has "From the creators of Left 4 Dead" in it, despite only 7 people from Turtle Rock actually worked on the original Left 4 Dead It's not that bad graphics are bad, but generally with AAA studios they don't prioritize gameplay and optimization over graphics and the in-game store, meanwhile indie studios don't go for the best looking graphics because they don't have the budget to all in all go try Stalker Anomaly and Stalker Gamma, if you want good graphics, immersion, good gameplay but with the most hardcore elements a survival game could have, they might be for you

I think the argument is that focusing too much on gfx to the detriment of gameplay is a bad idea. And that development is a zero sum game. You have only so much time and manpower to dedicate. Secure good gameplay first. But i agree with your main point, though would like to add that only with time have i needed better gfx in order to aid immerison. The original napali of unreal 1 was plenty immersive to me when i was a little snotter.

My first "hill" moment was Red Dead Redemption (the first game for 360). I think that was the first game I started taking landscape screenshots during gameplay.

I was playing playing cyberpunk and got bored af. Now I am playing hell divers and starsector like I never played and this is after I got 4090. games does not have to be graphicly amawing to look good and graphicly impresive games does not get to be good just with that.

i personally oppose graphicss for an accessability reason. cus like, the better graphics e strive for, the less people with worse computers can play it. people can just be too poor or have to use a hitty laptop for other reasons. so when we strive for enough graphics porn that we actually fucking orgasm or something, the fewer people can play the game ebcause they just don't have the money.

I still don't think graphics are important at all. I think aesthetics are. Not art direction, Big Mouth cartoon has art direction, to keep everything in line. To keep everything disgusting looking. If there were two versions Civilization IV, the one that already exists, and one where even a single unit, let's say the settler, got changed from the universally pleasant look he has, to yet another 2024 hooknose schnozz hollywood standard approval face... then even though the gameplay and everything is the same. I will not switch versions to that changed version. It's also the reason why I don't play LGBT games, because LGBT optics are gaudy and awful. It's not without reason why some art just looks 'tumblr' or 'gay' (or both) You can high def render a pride parade drag queen at 4k with raytracing on, in a beautifully rendered environment. I will not play it, I'd rather play the same thing if the character was replaced by a generic scarecrow, rendered at low poly. Because aesthetics matter. If you changed tetris blocks to turd shapes, nothing about the gameplay would be changed, but the game would be ruined through its aesthetics. And aesthetics scale from low pixel to high definition.

Meh, thats just your opinion and lack of imagination. Every kind of graphics can have its charm, it also largely depends on gameplay and personal taste.

I 100% agree, we should be getting incredible graphics and an amazing story. There are no more excuses left, it is 2024

graphics are stupid, immersion comes from story and gameplay

Yeah, looking forward what can be done with the new engines. With developers that also try to optimize their games
