This is why static timing is important, if done proper the car will fire off in less then one full rotation. After doing heads and cam in my 89 Fox the car fired immediately 1st twist of key.

check the info for the cam for a different firing order usually its a 351 firing order , also you may have a bad mass air meter or dirty meter causing pcm to drop cylinders or load cylinders . check compression on all cylinders and do a cylinder leakdown test maybe a leaking valve

It MUST be a spark related issue, I'd bet the plug wire is bad and is shorting somewhere... swap wires and see if the problem moves with the wire. Also check the TFI module and make sure there's no MSD box or anything non-stock in the ignition system.

And you also put the spout connector in while the engine was running which isn't the correct process. As you know the ecm moved the timing back to where it was previously. Spout goes in key off. Fyi this one has pushrods

Sounds like the valve adjustment is off. You could definitely hear lower compression with the uneven cranking on the first start. You guys keep up the mustang resurrection process going on!

Nice work guys. Have a question. I'm possibly buy a 90 lx with a trick flow R upper kit. I know the work was done back around 1998 or 1999, would the heads say trick flow on them? They have the same exact valve covers as this 88. I see on this build there is a trick flow stamp on the front of the heads. I couldn't find that on the car I'm possibly buying. I just want to know what I'm possibly getting into. Thanks

The machine shop that rebuilt my engine put a flat tappet cam in my 91 roller engine. Exact same symptoms as this. Changed it to the old firing order and it fired right up. I literally changed everything included the ECM before I found this out.

Put a air filter on to help smooth out the air entering the maf. That'll help stabilize the idle at least. Probably won't fix your misfire issue tho

You should compression test it also check the spark plug to make Sure that you didn't crack it I had and issue with mine that I cracked a plug and you couldn't tell it was cracked only way I found out is because I had enough Grease on my hands I left a small black line on the spark plug in the crack

did you turn the engine over with the valve cover off to make sure the valves are opening and closing? I had a built older 302 that wiped out a lifter and cam lobe. it wasnt a roller but could be a collapsed lifter if they are hydraulic

I wonder if your valves and valve seals on that cylinder are still good? I'd say maybe a head gasket problem too but if compression was good I'd rule that last part out

I maf swapped my 88gt back in the dizay. Haven't been down this road. If it was a vacuum leak it have to be a massive one for it to dump that much fuel that quick, I mean this is 1st fire. I've only seen plus turn that soot black when it's a timing issue. I'd start fresh all over again. Bring her up to DTC on comp stroke, locate 1 on dizzy drop her in. Idk if you used the factory balancer again? If the outer ring with the timing marks head walked on the inner piece of the balancer, you will def have way off timing. I mean she's close. She does fire and rev. I can't hear any sucking/ vac noise over that X pipe to manifold leak. Best of luck. When in doubt coyote swap it. I mean that how this channel started right 😂

compression check on that cylinder....make sure the valves are fully seating allowing proper compression. ive seen where brand new, name brand heads right out the box have a leaking intake, or exhaust valve/valve seat (wont name companies here). had to have em machined, smh! try another spark plug wire on that cylinder; old wire might give a resistance reading one way, then when "bent" back into place, the wire inside breaks connection...

Looks to me like your map sensor is bad on the firewall . It’s a breathing problem it doesn’t compensate for the air . Just a thought .

Toss BBK mass air in the garbage...Clean out IAC, Change wires, check your not a tooth off, unplug #1 see what happens. Could be vacume leak and gas goes bad so fast these days. I had to drain bowls on a carburetor many times to finally get water out of system one time. It ran like a dog like that.

91 Frankenstang I JUST deleted the egr in my 88gt.....run fine before, now acts just like this one. Egr block offs are in the back of heads! Be interesting in seeing what they find

liftedjeep93 ya, I know this first hand. Did it myself with a set of twisted wedge heads. For the life of me couldn’t find out what the hell was leaking. Thermactor plugs on front and back of heads. Most accessories on front cover the holes, depends what ur running.

15426378 may be your savior. Had that on a 351W I built years ago idled for shit found out only 4 cylinders were firing when they were supposed to. Another head scratcher was a bad coil on the primary winding that made it idle rough with erratic miss fires.

Wanted to remove my egr but wasn't sure how to plug the back you say it fits fine with plugs ?if so that's perfect .I looked for egr block plate for my bbk TB but only found TB spacers disguised as egr deletes which goes in between the TB and intake manifold but that would still leave my TB open ?

@@adrianv8225 some heads are threaded and fit an NPT plug, some heads you have to make a teardrop shaped plate and bolt it back down using the bolt hole for the egr tube mount (use 1/8" aluminum or steel and use the stock egr tube as a diagram of what you need to make) then clean the surface real well and seal it up with a thin bead of ultra copper silicone. theres plenty of egr delete plates for your throttle body and if not, make a plate just like you did with the back of the head and seal it up with ultra black silicone.
