As someone who’s autistic let me tell you this: When I found out at 18 that I had autism, I became self aware and ending up masking my traits to “fit in” and it just led to depression, self depreciation, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, and burnout. It was horrible By the time I turned 30 I gave up and just said fuck it I’m autistic sue me That then led to an easier life as I explained to people my traits and it helped with my new employment and my current relationship So acknowledging it helps!
@whateveryasaypal5022
@whateveryasaypal5022 Жыл бұрын
It's hard to not mask when I come across so many people who think high-functioning autistic people don't have "real" autism and we just use it as an excuse to be rude, selfish, lazy, unempathetic, violent, immature, "antisocial" (meaning asocial but those types of people wouldn't know the difference) etc, or to get pity points. Usually those people actually have those negative traits themselves and are projecting but I still find it hard not to let them get to me, probably because I've heard that shit so much there's unfortunately a part of me that believes it. There is still an unbelievably huge amount of misinformation and stigma about autism and particularly high-functioning it makes it difficult for me to tell people I'm autistic without being scared of whatever hurtful shit they might say or just them viewing me or treating me differently.
@brennanlable
@brennanlable Жыл бұрын
If I think I may be autistic, how do I know if I've been masking or not? I just am who I am now so I don't know how to introspect that.
@whateveryasaypal5022
@whateveryasaypal5022 Жыл бұрын
@@brennanlable that's a very broad question for a very specific situation. Sorry to say man but it really is something you kind of figure out on your own. Only you can see inside your head. Just do a shitload of research using credible and unbiased sources, and if you see a psychiatrist and/or psychologist, ask them lots of questions. Not really a question for strangers on the internet to answer, but I really hope you can find out whether you're autistic, and if you are if you've been masking. All the best mate
@basbunder
@basbunder Жыл бұрын
@@brennanlableI was in the same situation. I am currently in the process of getting it tested. How i did it was, talk to your doctor, they will recommend you a proper plan for getting it tested. Usually you go after the doctor directly to a specialised institute, but they can recommend a normal spygologisy first. My mindset: idk if I have it but if i do, I know how it affects me and others so I know about it and know how i could act if i want to. Beforehand I got tested for ADD and found that I got that. That knowledge had been a god sent. Because I now know why I can't force myself to constantly try to focus and instead find a place where there is not too much stimulus around. But yeah, the biggest tip by far is letting the right professionals investigate it for you. There is no point in diagnosing yourself for something you don't have, that can be really dangerous.

Honestly getting diagnosed as autistic has helped me a lot. Many people have asked “why does it matter?” But it matters because now I understand my reactions to things and can handle certain situations in a healthy way and I can understand or warn people of certain behaviors without having to go on a tangent on every single one that I loose track of all I have to say is “I have autism”. Growing up I was treated for anger issues which wasn’t actually anger issues and just my autism and the treatment plan basically made masking so heavily ingrained into my brain that now at 19 my therapist doesn’t think I will be able to ever untrain certain masking techniques. Having a diagnosis is powerful and important, don’t be afraid of it.

I'm scared if I get diagnosed and find out I have autism I'll just get really complacent and lazy... Like, "oh well I'm not as capable as I thought I was I guess." I know that's a terrible thing to feel, because autistic people can also be capable of great things. If I'm neurotypical then I feel like I'm not doing so good, but if I'm autistic then I feel like I've maybe been trying too hard to keep up.

I used to be a behavioral tech for adhd and autistic kids, teens and young adults. I would document neurodivergent traits to then pass on to a therapist or psychologist. Some people show neurodivergent traits from experiencing trauma as a kid and therapy can help them feel more normal. However I can say from my years of experience I think chad is 100% neurodivergent. He is alright at masking but he’s gotten so comfortable with his team and Max that he can stim- even with a camera in his face. I don’t doubt he struggles with mental health problems at home and staying “normal” All I can say is he has a lot of people who love and support him and regardless of his diagnosis he will still be loved and supported.

Being autistic isnt nearly as bad as cancer, but i do agree that i dont want it either It just makes life in general harder. Shit's all fucky like social ques, textures, smells, getting overwhelmed... And hell, being discriminated against for existing or having your existence demonized by religious freaks. I'm kinda hypocritical like that i guess, cuz Im also queer but I'd never change it. Being queer doesn't hurt but being autistic kinda does. Even if there was no discrimination, there's still sensory overload and the frustration of not catching on to social stuff, and it's a vicious cycle. Not to mention the sensitivity to certain textures and smells It's just life, but unnecessarily more annoying

Also as an autistic person who diagnosed as ADD in my early 20s but later at 32 finding out I was autistic, this is actually very relatable and genuine to me and my own experience. I had the same feeling and emotions of not wanting to believe I wasn't normal like everyone else mentally or something outside of being ADD and just not being able to focus and was just very quirky and distractible, and was also just super introverted and liked spending insane amounts of time doing things I liked alone, but it was actually me just enjoying my special interests. And I went through a lot of relationships where one of the main problems that caused fights was me needing time alone, doing things I really like and it always came off the wrong way with who I was dating. But once you know and accept it, you start to understand why you work the way you do and can inform those around you about why you do the things you do so maybe they wont see it negatively and can accept you for you and will support you needing and doing those things.

Felt like it was easier to deny it. 5 years into therapy I can tell y’all that yeah knowing that I’m depressed is a bit of a bummer, but I feel SO MUCH BETTER now when I’m actually treating it. And shout out to my psychologist, I adore her

I've always been odd. Weird kid, social issues, major depression issues, whatever. Made myself watch people and eventually kinda mimic what normal was to other people. But wasn't until like two years ago a friend of mine found out he was autistic and made me take the tests. So here I am at 32 just now finding out no I wasn't just weird as a kid I was actually straight up autistic.

I remember being diagnosed with the boring autism (where I didn’t like sonic ): ) and just feeling like everyone is trying to be nice to me to look good in front of others. People were too nice to me. And I hate myself and still wish I didn’t have the tism

It's weird autism has any stigma around it since - like ADHD - it's very widespread and nuanced. I'd bet that most people here are on the spectrum and just don't realize it cause it's such a low amount.

Found out I had the 'tism at 30. Knowing is good for putting a lot of lifes experiences into context and basically put life into 'easy mode'. Things were so much more difficult before I had a diagnosis.

honestly it is really good to know if you have, due to the fact autism is so varied (honestly i find it really weird and complicated since its such a huge spectrum but thats just me) it could just have no impact on your life at all, or maybe it might have a bit of an impact which youll need help with but would be a bit harder to find if you werent diagnosed

the only annoying thing that can come from stuff like this is that in my case. Several people have tried convincing me that im autistic cause of my traits. i know damn well i don't have autism cause i dont fit enough of the qualifications for it. that stuff can get really annoying

For the curious, pursue professional testing if you score high on the Autism Quotient (gold standard for self-diagnosis.) I went through one of the worst ways to be told that I know of, and I'm still thankful that I know. It didn't require a lifetime of harrowing dramatic acceptance either; it was maybe a month of confusion and curiosity followed by 20 years of gratitude.

i’m likely high functioning autistic and i really haven’t bothered getting tested due to these exact reasons. i don’t want to know i’m autistic, that makes me feel even more abnormal and like i’m a dumb spastic. it would feel awful if any of my family’s suspicions were actually confirmed. additionally, all the confirmed autistic people i’ve interacted with have been incredibly irritating and almost childish, even the more high functioning ones. i hope i don’t come across as that LOL but i’m sure this whole series of paragraphs is making me seem that way. personally, i’m with him on this. if i knew i was for sure autistic, i’d be depressed. maybe it’s cause i’m more of the high functioning autistic girl type, so that impacts my behaviour and “autistic” traits, but i feel decent without knowing i could probably be autistic. sorry for my outdated views on mental health and disorders, i just don’t want to be a confirmed autist❤️ BUT if the asperger’s diagnosis was still used, i’d probably get tested.

I don’t know much but my brother was recently diagnosed as low-level autistic which is also known as Asperger’s. It’s up to you whether or not to pursue a diagnosis - especially the money consideration - but I hope that whatever you choose, you find your way
