So looking online it seems the reason why there was so much more gross out humor is from there being more writers from Ren and Stimpy working on Spongebob wanting to try to use something that apparently worked on that show and Stephen Hillenburg not being able to hold them back. It's basically like this through season 8.

Re-watching this series has made me surprised at how much everyone in Bikini Bottom treats Spongebob like shit. All Spongebob does is try to be happy & positive everyday which yes can get annoying. But he always goes out of his way to help people and whenever Bobby gets fed up with people's shit its the best.

Dude, Germany made such a hype out of "Whatever Happened to Spongebob", it was insane. Here it aired in July 2009 (yes, I looked this stuff up) and I vividly remember that two weeks prior Spongebob suddenly didnt show up anymore _in the intro_ then the screen had "broadcasting probems" and then shit just went off the rails. German Nickelodeon started a whole backstage news broadcast "Where is SpongeBob" for *2 weeks* that he went missing. No episodes aired for 2 weeks. Spongebob was cut out of every picture on the Nickelodeon webside and a whole new webside was made because children were asked to please look for Spongebob everywhere and send videos, photos ect. I'm pretty sure Nickelodeon even had people in Spongebob costumes hide in bigger cities for children to spot. Every day at 7:45 pm there was a new broadcast giving you updates about how the search was going. Eventually, he was "found" in Movie Park Germany and they had German Spongebob giving a whole (kinda poorly video-edited lol) statement about what happened. He _allegedly_ went away to prepare celebrating his birthday with us and promised to never vanish like that again. He also thanked all the children for blowing up the webside with photos, videos ect out of so much concern for him. That shit was _stressful_ as a 9 year old! There are posts online of people recalling how they *cried* back when this happened because 2 weeks is such a long time when you're that young or even younger. There are still relics of it to find here on youtube.
