As a civil engineer: glass is NOT a weak material. The problem is that it's not ductile and you can't really visibly see if it's going to break soon, it just kind of happens and that's the end of it. One of the most important things we should ensure as structural engineers is that we see if something gives soon enough, so that we prevent it.

Steve Jobs Theater: You are basically correct: Both electricity and /water/ are run through the space between the glass. The lights don't need a ton of wiring, but the are required to have fire suppression systems. The food is overall pretty good. Though, I would say they're overhyping the coffee. It's good, but IMO not great... And while it isn't obvious, there are plenty of non-apple products in 'enterprise-y' roles like room controls, definitely a few PCs in media rooms and specialized labs...

Since you mention people bring non-Apple products to a Apple event. I used to work for a programming tools company back when Sun Microsystems came out with the Java programing language. Sun was one of the most vocal Microsoft sucks companies around worse than Apple. Sun is a maker of Sun Unix workstations and their own OS called SunOS, I get an invite to got to a Sun presentation for some new Java tools. I get their and large hotel conference room and its packed with media and programmer types. The event starts late so when they do start everyone is focused. The presentation has a very Unix look to it and then they have a tech issue and all the screen in the room freese up. They start scrambling to fix tbe problem and it's taking awhile they final say we have to reboot the system but all should be fine afterwards. Next thing coming up on all the screen is Window logos and Windows booting up. People start laughing their asses off. Then you can see they are running Windows presentation software. Very embarrassed they get started again and finished the main presentation and they just say that's it for today. Years later I'm working for a major Sun customer big enough we have Sun sales and tech people onsite all the time, they all had Windows laptops.

12mm thick glass and 4 panels per glass wall with a total of 44 panels in total. Throw in the 80 tons and divide that by 44 panes and you can roughly estimate how much load each panel can take. Add in factor of safety of maybe 8, and you’ll see that the glass in total can actually support roughly 150-200 tons.

did you know that the glass in Apple Park is self cleaning? lemme explain... in the first stage of the self cleaning process which is called "photocatalytic" a coating in outer layer of the glass reacts with daylight to breakdown organic dirt, then in the second stage "hydrophilic" droplets of rain hits the glass and spreads evenly and washes off the loosened dirt. the glass also designed to dry quickly without leaving watermarks. pretty cool ha?
