Videos like these are always of interest Sam. Keen to see how you get on locating a new deck. I need a new 42" deck for my Countax. A bare deck looks to be about £400 and complete one with new bearings and blades £900+. Impressive reversing by the way!

First thing Sam as a lorry driver of 40 years I totally agree with you on taking a test for trailers over 750 kg, I now live in France and over here it's 500 kg, my new job over here is cutting grass and servicing lawn mowers, the Briggs and Stratton engines are pretty much bomb proof just keep the new deck grass and mud free or as you found out they rust like a 70s Cortina, I clean mine every day I use it, also change the spindle's as you will most likely snap the bolts or break the cast case ( the bolts self tap into the cast shell ) like the content, I've had my Range rover classic for 20+ years now and she still pulls the trailer for the mowers.

Nice to see a Range Rover being used for work rather than a status symbol. I went for the slightly larger compact tractor, maybe more expensive but worth it in the long run due to the build quality

I have an mtd that has the same rusty deck. They are poorly made but Briggs and strattan seems pretty strong. However I soon got bored with cutting an acre of grass, and now have a robot mower to do the job for me, OMG it's a little bit of a life changer☺️

Lost count of the number of mowers I have fixed over the years. Most, not all, are made by AYP (American yard products) and most times looking for ayp parts is cheaper than the name on the mower. Good luck with it Sam, second class ride is better than a first class walk.
@SamsMotors2 жыл бұрын
Do you know what, I totally forgot you did all this kind of stuff! Should have come to you for advice beforehand haha! What do you reckon, think she's worth a new deck? Or should I get shot?!
@Bensgarage2 жыл бұрын
@@SamsMotors last time I checked a bare deck was about £200, you might be able to get the blade hub/mandrel off, but they are held on with shear bolts (normally). So cost in a pair of those, just in case. Drive belt and cutter belt, normally about £30 each. You are doing the work, so no labour costs. It might be worth fixing, engine seems alright. I have replaced a couple of those Briggs intek engines, but they are normally fairly reliable. Just make sure oil level is good when driving on slopes, as the oil tends to slosh to one side and cock up the crank. We have had a couple of cheap ride ons, just out grew them.

I have a mountfield lawn tractor, basically same thing, I’ve found after 4 years it’s far easier just to get the local specialist to fettle it - belts pulleys and brakes are a right pita to get right and because they are so expensive to buy I just get it sorted once a year for about 250 quid.

Another great video. I really enjoy these - of course I'm an L322 owner myself. I didn't catch it, but did you mention the electronic trailer features of the L322? If you put the truck in tow mode, you can attach some stickers to the face of the trailer which will allow the RR to better judge parking distances, etc.

It's a good engine Sam Briggs are reliable make. A tip for protecting the deck underneath we clean it off thoroughly paint it then make a fiberglass resin and paint it the grass doesn't stick to it as easily. When you put new fuel line on buy an in line stop tap so when you finish using the machine turn the tap off and let the carb run empty protect the gaskets inside

I am 20, under the new towing rules as mentioned in this video I can tow 3500kg and recently towed my first car. I had a fair amount of knowledge in towing already, having driven HGV's before as part of an experience day. Therefore I found driving my car with a trailer easy and natural and was very confident. I was aware of the risks such as snaking, weight limits, etc. If it wasnt for me bringing my dad with me, there would have been issues when loading - I had no idea how to strap the car up correctly (I wanted to learn). I know people out there will probably be annoyed because I didnt have to take the exam or etc which I understand but the load was strapped up correctly and it made it 100 miles home just fine. What worries me is somebody in my position (or more clueless and less experience) will go and do this and have a catastrophic failure and/or cause a real major accident. I understand why they discontinued B+E classes but I think there at least should be some sort of basics of towing and securing a load training session to attend before you can start towing.
@SamsMotors2 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly! Glad your first tow went well though!
@trainman6652 жыл бұрын
I don't think driving a HGV on an experience day counts as much towing knowledge, but I agree that there will be people our age who may get into trouble when towing. However, the test was mainly aimed at parking manouvres and connecting and disconnecting the trailer. Correct hitching is important but the rest of the test isn't particularly useful for safety while towing. I'd like to think most people who tow decent size trailers would likely have enough undertsanding of how everything works anyway. It's caravan users that will cause more problems. Caravans are a lot more sensitive to wind etc, yet will far more likely towed by the average person with no/little experience.
@Spw14712 жыл бұрын
@@trainman665 I agree with you about the caravans. And I understand your point about the HGV experience, I have played a lot of simulator along with this. I’m not saying that means I am amazing I just meant it in the way that I have previous experience driving larger vehicles therefore more experience than most other people of my age that are starting to tow
@peacockealot2 жыл бұрын
@@Spw1471 a single day in an HGV doesn’t count as experience. When you’ve driven one as your job and in all sorts of weather conditions and different types of roads then you can say you have experience.
@Spw14712 жыл бұрын
@@peacockealot as I mentioned above, I considered the HGV experience an improvement of my skills and a better insight into towing compared to most others at my age who would be starting to tow. I don’t mean it in the way that I know everything. My aim is to become a HGV driver eventually.

You're in Ireland. You have a green tractor. Only one thing is missing! Grassmen sticker haha!! Should make cutting that decent sized lawn a doddle, top part looks pretty thick and thatched up so it'll likely struggle, make sure you do it when nice and dry, at a good high setting first and work you're way down a bit on each cut to get it back to being something more lawnlike.
@SamsMotors2 жыл бұрын
Cheers Cap'n, forgot you were a lawn care enthusiast! That top part will definitely be a test for the wee beastie... Think I'd best order a couple deck belts for her 👍

Great content Sam, glad to see you settling in well. Welcome to our lovely little island. Just to mention that the towing restrictions are a little different here - we still require a specific category license for towing loads >750kg. I don't know if driving on a UK license excludes you from this requirement, but all it takes is one Garda in a bad mood to catch you out on that one and cause you a headache! Safe motoring, I'm sure we'll pass each other on the M6 and M17 regularly!

What kind of tow hitch extension do you have? The factory tow hitch is so far under the bumper that you have to extend it to get a ball on it, plus you don’t want to damage your bumper.

Funny thing about trailers,i have the old licence so automatically have trailer and 7 1/2t and never had an accident with either so i don't know where the assumption of more crashes comes from to be honest. More accidents with trailers comes from a complete lack of care in regards to condition...How do i know?, i repaired hundreds of trailers over the years that were rotten.

Round a cone and then line it up into an imaginary loading bay as it’s based on the HGV test.
