Well I will take the side of the 14 day limit because every time my husband and I travel and try to pull over and stay at a spot for a night it is always full. I will bet this is partly why - some full timers are abusing the 14 day limit and living on these spots for extended periods.

Even state campgrounds I have come across full timers who switch names ie use a different name to get another X days under a different reservation. Ran into this in a prime Coastal Campground. Ranger caught them and kicked them out. Its a location local and regional residents would do maybe a weekend a yr with the kids and it was probably 60/40 mix regional locals and thru travelers 2-4 days stays typically. But $35 a night for 28 days is a fraction of the cost of renting a house in the area. Ranger said over 40% of his sites were booked for the full length by the same people. Which is a big reason why it’s impossible to ever get a weekend there now. Locals hate it and rangers are fed up with the abuse.

I am just going to tell you straight up and undiluted; you created this entire senario. You have camped for years and are familar with the 14 day stay. The problem here is that you have gotten away with it so many times; now you feel some sense of entitlement. This just adds fuel to the reasons why nomads have such a difficult time and feel the rules should be bent for them but no one else. Had you done what you were suppose to be doing all along, you would not have had this encounter. This sets a terrible example of what not to do. Plus the ranger was not giving you approval to stay as long as you want; its that you had a few remaining days to stay within your 14 days. The ranger did seem smug but regardless, you should of simply left on the 14th day and be appreciative that you had 14 days and not push your good fortune. Omg, even after getting to the next spot, that sign clearly said "ROAD CLOSED", but you just ignored it and was determined to have your way. I would not be suprised if you ran into trouble because of that. I have enjoyed your channel for a long time. You are very smart; creative and handy, but this surprised me. @@evecarrington562 It's unnerving to get caught (like a knock on a window while stealth camping) but rules are rules, regardless of how clean the camp and whether or not you've spent $$ in a local community. God knows Walmart corporate rues the day they decided to allow RVers, Van lifers and car dwellers to camp over night at their locations. The community comes up with a myriad of reasons (Oh we can report bad happenings overnight, or we spend money buying food and supplies that we'd have to buy anyway regardless of the camping policy) to justify the slides out, awnings flapping, bbq grill tailgate type activity and left over trash and spilled pee jugs in the morning. Just as best you can play by the rules , move on to the next lawful camp area and keep the area as clean or cleaner than you arrived..

Because he got away with it so many times in the past, he felt he could do whatever he wants. Give someone an inch and they'll take that mile. Perhaps the first time he did it, he stayed a few days over and didn't get caught. Now he's up to staying for a month or more at a time. If he didn't get caught this time, he'd stay for half the year or more.

I work in a national forest. I frequently have to attempt to enforce the forestry rules. We live in a country that has chosen to limit its powers, though we know power can still be abused. There is an expectation of voluntary compliance with rules, but when people don't comply there is a greater chance of having to deal with enforcement. The powers that be need to try to equally apply the rules to all people to the best of their ability. I would much prefer that the people I interact with keep the very short list of rules that they are asked to keep, so that my life is not taken up with people who cannot govern themselves (drive the wrong way down or posted 1 way, won't pay the voluntary fees and posted in there windshield, won't put there fires out, won't keep their vicious dogs leashed. For every person who is not a bad actor who is just trying to enjoy the forest and have a nice experience, there are 1 or 2 groups of people who when they come around there's an increase in fighting, complaints, thefts, and drug activity. How can I enforce the rules on them but not on you? How can I get them to move along after 2 weeks if I'm going to selectively apply the law only to them and not to you? Would this be a just society? The way I see it, he had everything he needed to fine you and possibly a much worse experience, but he showed you mercy. During your 1st conversation he was attempting to show you more bark than bite hoping you would govern yourself and voluntarily comply. But his bark didn't work on you. You may not like me saying this, but some how in the world you inhabit, where you're the center of it, you thought that he was telling you he was just going to let you get by on following the rules, but that's not what he said and that's not what he meant.

You sir, have my deepest respect. I can only imagine the horrors of having to deal with people like this day in and day out. What's worse is that guy knowingly admits that he had no real plans on where he was going next, so he just assumed that he could stay as long as he wanted since he's done it in the past. I can't believe he had the attitude that the ranger may encounter someone who will "put him in his place" because they won't stand for him to enforce the rules. Why should rangers put up with such childish behavior? He even admits that he changed his story about how long he'd been there when questioned by the ranger. This kind of entitled attitude is just sickening. Learn to follow the rules so the ranger won't have a problem with you. Next time you may find yourself in jail cell with a hefty fine to pay.

I’m confused. If there is a 14 day limit, there is a 14 day limit. Same like If a sign says no overnight parking, there is no overnight parking. If the sign says the road is closed it means don’t drive there the road is closed. A park near me once had a few basic rules for dogs like wearing a rabies tag. But so many people disregarded the rules you now have, on leash, rabies tag, paid for county dog license tag, restricted areas. So because some people avoided the rules now everyone has to deal with more rules. Animal Control stopped me and gave me a warning because my dog was wearing a harness and I had left her tags in my car. I knew the rules. I took the warning and moved on. It’s not my land.

@@MerwinARTist from what I’ve read, it’s 14 days at one location, then have to relocate at least 25 miles away. And I think you can’t go back to the first location for 30 days. Update: I did more research: what I stated above is for blm land, about relocating at least 25 miles. I went to the NFS website and looked at camping limitations for Kaibab and Coconino forests, they both say 14 days within a 30 day time frame and then have to leave said forest (not relocate within same forest, but to actually leave the forest you are in).

Understand your frustration but you are taking advantage of public land, so you have to follow the rules, and the 14 day rule is a major reason I don't camp this way myself. your alternative is to pay for campgrounds, which not many of the van dwellers want to do. Fine, but then don't complain when asked to follow the 14. Now, on the other side, you and Lefty are great stewards of the land and are not leaving old cars, mattresses, beer cans, etc everywhere. I wish the forest service and blm would get off their asses and start enforcing and jailing some of these scum bags who are out there ruining it for people like you. I have always been wondering since I started watching your videos how you were able to stay in the same spot on public land for so long. Now I know - you have just been lucky so far. It does not surprise me you were asked to move. That is the rule. Since Covid there has been a huge surge in people living more full time on the road. Requiring everyone who uses public land to follow the rules gives more people opportunities to enjoy our public resources. Having to move to a new area every two weeks is the price we pay for the freedom of living the nomad life rent free on public land. I think it is a good rule and I am happy to see it being in forced. Your first post to KZbin for this location that you have been asked to leave was on March 27th three weeks ago.

It’s your responsibility to know the laws, rules and regulations of every area and state you are in. If you have been doing this for a while you should know better. It’s just like if you fly to another country it’s YOUR responsibility to know the laws, rules and regulations of that country and what you can and can and cannot bring g into that country. So from here on in you might want to start looking at the rules for BLM land and national forests and anywhere else you decide to camp. Another example is if you go fishing you need to know what kind of fish you can keep,the size of it and limit of each river or lake you fish in. Limits on camping on public lands keep people from squatting on a spot and living there all season long. In some areas, there are annual limits on top of consecutive day limits. Given the amount of trash that people have left behind, and the limited number of park staff, we’re lucky they allow as much dispersed camping as they do. The impact left behind by thoughtless and disrespectful people ruins a good thing for everyone.

I really think you need to look at this a little different. The 2 week law is in place for many reasons and just because you've "gotten away with it before" it's still not right that you abuse the 14 day stay limit. That pretty much goes for any law. If you have been speeding all your life but never been stopped doesn't make speeding OK. In my opinion you got off lucky by not getting fined for the over stay and you should plan on following the stay rules in the future or camp where there are no stay limits.

When the ranger talks to you about length of stay, you've been warned and you are now on countdown. Arizona seems to have a problem with squatters on public lands. As a result, BLM and the Forest Service patrol the more popular spots. Don't take it personally. And remember, most forests have 0-3 rangers. Stay further out and away from the popular areas and you'll likely see no ranger(s).

Agee with you Phil. Stay in low demand, remote places and no one will ask you to leave. Stay in a popular/preferred by the masses places, and you will get more visits from rangers policing for overstay issues. The C-Man didn't seem to be staying in a place very populated area. Traditionally the National Parks and Federal Lands and State parks and lands “Rules” and Laws a huge part of enjoying them was under the understanding that you were to “follow” the Established Rules and Laws ie be a good custodian and self police your self. When the Feds have to police all that land to enforce the rules and laws they can, will and have simply closed access given visitors have proven they cannot self police and follow the rules/laws. 👍 That is also why you find EVERY Ranger looses patience fast when they see you know the Rules and laws and chose to not follow. Back in the 90's I spent the summers bouncing around from state park to fed parks to private camp grounds and the rule is 2 weeks and has been for 30+ years . Sucks but that's the rule several private camps will let you camp longer if you are Decent clean camper but it's rare and it's because the state doesn't check them that often . Your on the list now . David as for it being a pain to move your a nomad what else you got to do , I wish I didn't have to pay for trash pickup at my house when I haul it off myself but that's the game we're all playing , Hug Lefty and let it roll off your back .

I know the area well. Head a bit further south towards the edge of Sycamore Canyon and it is beautiful country out there. That said, that entire area would be trashed if there was no 14 day rule; it should be saved for everyone to have a slice occasionally. I suspect the rancher was annoyed by the livestock being spooked, and everyone there is friends you know. And a closed road is a CLOSED ROAD, had the resource officer shown up there, which I'm sure he does on occasion, you very well may have been in the Flagstaff slammer. Also, some of the long-termers (violators) are known to self-stock the fishing waters there, and that is a wildlife management issue. Just because you commit a crime several times without getting caught does not invalidate the law.

With more and more BLM and national forest camp sites being closed because people refuse to follow the rules its best to follow them or it won’t be long and their won’t be any place left to camp for free. The national parks are near impossible to book a camp site anymore and the facilities there are falling apart, while state parks are all jumping on the bandwagon to charge out of state campers $40 to $60 more per day and don’t give senior citizens discounts to out of state campers. I am sure if you had to stay in private camp grounds it wouldn’t take long to come to the conclusion this life style isn’t working anymore.

Sounds like the Ranger was lenient. Did you even consider that you had been breaking the law in the past & just now got caught? Almost like a consistent speeder who tries to get out of a speeding ticket because he got away with speeding in the past. The Ranger was doing his job.

Exactly. His excuse is that I've gotten away with in the past, so why bother me now. That's not an excuse to break the rules. ALL people have a right to have access to that land, not just him and his party. If they didn't enforce the rules, there's no telling how long he'd stay.

Just some thoughts. You get to live a great lifestyle, but there are times where it leaves you choice-less. There is presently a serious problem with too many bad actors on BLM land. Rangers can't remedy that kind of trouble without ruffling a few feathers. I'd consider letting it go and maybe use that info to your advantage. I'd consider sticking to the rules while on Federal Land. Oh, and the farther outback you travel, the fewer human hassles you have.

I don't have a problem with a ranger enforcing a 2 week stay length as long as they don't take sympathy on someone's sob story that has a nasty camp and has all kinds of excuses as to why they cant move on. Often times too many of us who actually follow the leave no trace rules get hassled more than someone who has a million excuses about their lives.

While you only see a certain angle of a struggling person's life, try to remember that those "million reasons" was a pile too heavy for them to stay "normal". It's never just one thing for anyone, is it?

David you knew dang well there is a two week limit. Those rules are there to protect you from the types of people you would feel uncomfortable living around. Our forests are being used more often than ever before, often by people who have no experience in the outdoors, they are just being careful and as fair as they can be. You didn't explain it right if you were expecting sympathy. Maybe the reality is is that Nomads find spots they can stay longer than is permitted if no authority is around all the time. Its normal. But what do they preach to you from all the channels? Move! Move when your time is up. Like you said, it was just 27 miles down the road. Took longer to break camp than it did to drive to the next camping spot.

There was no way he could explain this to get sympathy. He was in the wrong and he freely admits that he's done this before. There's no excuse for breaking the rules when you know what they are. He wanted to settle in and stay as long as he wanted and that's not fair when others have fair right to a nice camp site as well. That ranger was well within his rights.

If you’ve never been bothered, it’s because the NFS/BLM are short staffed and they worked on other projects with limited resources. If you’re starting to be bothered now, it’s because priorities are shifting due to things like garbage left behind, illegal ORV use, etc. They’re not singling you out, just enforcing the rules that have always been there. If you want to stay in an area for a season, consider beckoning a volunteer camp host for the NFS/NPS. A season of that and you’ll understand what the problems are all about. If you move around, more communities will benefit from the services you use while passing through town.

14 days means 14 days that’s the law for that area. Those guys dress the way they due because they do not know who they might meet out there. It’s for their safety. Some times the people are not so nice of people out there.

Well, I still gave you a thumbs up but I am disappointed that you don't think the 14 day rule applies to you...if you did get arrested Lefty would be traumatized during your absence. Just returned from a month long exploration of the desert southwest and I don't like the idea of having to move every 2 weeks so I sympathize with the inconvenience but while the rules are in place we should follow them to the best of our ability.

I've had rangers stop and remind me of the 14 days right after I pull in. Only time I broke that rule was when I had mechanical issues and was waiting for my appt with the local mechanic. Thankfully wasn't bothered by rangers that drove by me daily.

Crazy kinda. I think limits are limits. I have been to many places and couldn’t find a spot even for a night because every spot was taken by squatters. Even in designated spots. Later, it was completely locked up and closed. More than a few times. Alternatively, I’ve spent 2-3 days picking up nails and garbage. I feel like my time should start after I’m done cleaning. This is one I side with the law enforcement ranger. Too many issues with semi-permanent stay individuals who do not take care of their spots and abuse their welcome. You’re a good guy but you may want to better pick your battles. I note you pulled in well over two weeks ago, so there’s that.

Also if someone does not leave they can also tow the camper, rv, Van or whatever vehicle they are camped in. With they way our country’s inflation and people are becoming homeless more people on the for free camping. That’s why he’s there. They have to enforce the rules or it would turn into a dump. No sympathy here. The ranger did his job and it sounds like he was respectful. You KNEW the rules and you felt that you deserved a pass because you'd gotten away with it in the past. The rules are there so EVERYONE has a chance to enjoy the public lands, not just you. I'm sure there are plenty of times in your life when you were happy when someone enforced the rules because it worked in your favor. Don't get mad and make excuses like a child just because you got caught. We've all gotten caught breaking rules at some point, and we all deserved the punishment when we received it.

I was just north of Williams and the rangers came thru and made many people move that were over 14 days. I think there using satellite images. In one area outside Flagstaff I saw US forestry flying a drone I suspect for enforcement. Never saw much enforcement prior to fall-winter 2021. They are definitely cracking down!

Kevin and Julia here....sorry you had to go through that brother. Have you ever thought about camping up in North Central/North West Pennsylvania (Clinton and Cameron Counties)? Routes 872, 144, 120, and 6. We go up in April and October...it's beautiful up there, quiet you won't see many people and you won't get kicked out. There is a fresh water spring up off this one road where we stay. We have been going up since 2006, we pack up our F350 with our dual sports and ride gear and stay in our buddies cabin for about 2 weeks. You should put it on your itinerary some time. We have friend that lives in New York and he comes down and rides there all the time. Lucky would love it🙂 If you want to know more let me know.

Its becoming a big problem for long term RV parking/storage and yes the trashy full timers staying way too long. FED Law is 14 days nothing changes that. Just follow it and they can focus their super limited resources on the problems of which they have allot more today than 3 yrs ago. Unfortunately
