Impressive improvement. I'm in a similar situation myself, and so are many of the middle-aged players that I practice with. Generally it seems as if adult beginners reach their final skill level surprisingly soon - once a pusher with weak attacks it's hard to break out even with practice (but obviously impossible without practice, hence I practice and play these attacks all the time even though it has a negative expected value).

Clive's gotta bend a little bit forward and also his left hand needs to be positioned across his body a bit under the chest. This will make his forehand loops really effective and powerful.

Shouldn’t we wait for the ball to stop dropping from the top of the bounce which decreases the under spin and makes it easier to lift? Also, what spin setting on power pong mimics realistic under spin from an opponent? I believe one can’t try to go forward with the loop if there’s a lot of under spin on the ball and it needs to be more upwards?

You can wait for the ball to start dropping and swing more vertically. This type of loop can get lots of spin, but it tends to be slower as the energy is transferred up. In the video I was advocating swinging up and a little more forward. This will enable you to attack most pushes with a faster forehand loop. For the Power Pong robot -2 or -3 should be realistic backspin.

@@TomLodziak thanks Tom. So if I take it early after the bounce when it has more under spin, my loop can be more forward and hence speedy, but if I wait for it to drop then it has less under spin, then my loop has to be more vertical/upwards and hence the slow loop? Am I understanding this right?

@@Amsfxyz What I'm really saying in this video, is contact the ball just as it is leaving the table. I'm not too concerned if the ball is rising or falling, if I make contact just as it leaves the table I can transfer energy forwards (and up to counter the backspin). If it is lighter backspin, you can swing a little more forwards (and up). If it's heavy backspin, you may need to swing up a little more. But if you get the timing just as the ball leaves the table, you can play very positive forehand loops.

@@TomLodziak thank you! I’ll keep this in mind and give it a try. Any suggestions on when the push is long and bounces almost on the edge?
@TomLodziak
@TomLodziak 5 ай бұрын
@@Amsfxyz If it's a very deep push, you may need to back off the table a step, and let the ball bounce up a little. So the contact will be a little further back from what you see in this video.

Tom, please move your index finger off the middle of the rubber! I tell my pupils this about 1 gazillion times per session, can't have you demonstrating the exact same thing...

I know this is a battle I will never win, but here goes ... some beginner players will place their hand low down the handle. The index finger then points straight up the handle and into the middle of the rubber. I agree that this is not a good grip, as a player does not have good control over the racket angle and the index finger gets in the way when playing backhands. My grip is not like this. My hand is higher up the handle, where it should be. But my index finger still moves up a little high when playing forehand strokes. Other than it not being aesthetically pleasing, is this a problem? No, not really. I have quite a strong forehand, so it clearly doesn't prevent me playing any forehand strokes with decent quality. What about backhand? When I play backhand, my index finger moves back down, so it's not in the way. My index finger and thumb are constantly changing positions as I switch between forehand and backhand. Is this a problem? No, not really. It's fairly common for players to make grip changes between strokes. I am able to play fast rallies switching between strokes. Now, I'm not suggesting that people copy my grip. My index finger position is not a conscious choice. The only time I am aware of it, is when I film myself (or when viewers on youtube tell me off). But it really isn't as big an issue as what people seem to think. When I did filming with Liam Pitchford in 2022, I noticed an interesting thing. When Liam plays forehands his index finger comes up onto the rubber too. Maybe mine is a little higher, but there’s not much in it. The moment I saw this, I stopped caring what anyone send about my grip. If a high index finger is fine for Liam, who has been top 15 in the world and has beaten Ma Long and Xu Xin, then it’s fine for me too!
