We inevitably face these situations in serve and volley where, either due to a short return or being a bit late off the blocks, we won’t be able to make a quality volley. Holding up a bit to take the return off the bounce with a nicely placed slice can be the best option as you describe here Brent. Thanks.

The toughest one for me is the low over the net slice. Sometimes it seems like an easy half-volley , then the ball carries a bit extra and ends up as a shoetop volley. I find it hard to read this one and get caught sometimes. ??

Yeah. Totally agree. Picking up the depth of that shot can be greatly improved with really good balance. If you get even slightly off balance, your brain wants to find a stationary object to get re-oriented. And yeah, that moving tennis ball ain't a stationary object ;-). Posture & balance is a super skill in tennis.
