So it ended up an small affair and my dad put a lot of effort to make everything nice for his guests.

Both families should be able to celebrate with you. You need not have a high cost wedding in Germany - you can easily rent a room at a Christian church (not the church building, the Gemeindehaus) - and have a self-catered party there - people bring cake and savoury buffet if you tell them to. You can choose a vintage dress or second hand dress or just rent one for the day and you can even skimp on the music and just either use the equipment of the church - or your own playlist with good speakers. Leave the big celebration for Vietnam, your in-laws might still want to come over to meet your family, but not many German relatives might do, so that will be a Vietnam wedding with Vietnamese food (which you miss so much here!) and with Vietnamese rituals and your family, friends and all your neighbours you grew up with. You will regret it if you do not have that. And you might also want to do the marriage here in Germany, too. Make the most of it - enjoy you can have it both ways!

@@KolorfulDreamsArtKdaIllegal where because Germany and Vietnam are two different countries with different laws
@KolorfulDreamsArtKda7 ай бұрын
@@Ebunoluwa13 that's illegal in both countries. A couple that's already married (civil marriage) who arrive in Germany from Vietnam or in Vietnam from Germany are considered as already married even if the marriage took place in another country, they can't marry again unless they get a divorce before. I'm Mexican and I married my French husband in Mexico, so the next step was to take our Mexican marriage certificate to the French embassy/consulate in Mexico city and they gave us the French document that was the equivalent of our Mexican marriage certificate + other French documents we'd need in order for me to live in France. Getting a second civil marriage in France would've been impossible (without lying) and unlawful. When you're a foreigner and you wish to get married in another country they ask for a document from your own country that proves that you are not already married. So that's what they should do, if they get married in Vietnam they take their Vietnamese marriage certificate to the German embassy/consulate in Vietnam and they'll have their German certificate, without a second civil marriage in Germany.
@KolorfulDreamsArtKda7 ай бұрын
@@Ebunoluwa13 that's what embassies and consulates are for, to sort this kind of administrative situations, so that a marriage that's performed in one country is valid in another country, without second weddings, etc, etc. Believe me, as someone who married a foreigner I know what I'm talking about, plus my mom worked for almost 20 years in a consulate and this was part of her job.

What your friends did is exactly what I suggested in a separate comment! Have a big but cheap wedding (compared to Germany) in Vietnam, and use the extra money to get the boyfriend's family and friends there. They could cover their accommodations and other expenses (having her family pitch in with places to sleep, feeding them etc), and only ask them to pay for their own flights and related travel costs. The more weddings the merrier, i had a big wedding the netherlands, a smaller version in hongkong and another small version in shanghai. Directly after we could continue our honeymoon in hawaii. Afterwards we flew to los angeles to celebrate our marriage with the last part of the family. You (should) only marry once in your life, so just be creative if it fits your budget.

Congratulations! My advice is just follow your heart, your wedding day is special for the two of you do it on your terms. If you want to have a beach wedding then go for it, but there is nothing wrong with an intimate wedding and they can be just as beautiful. I had my wedding at my grandparents house and we made the food ourselves and decorated with diy projects and it was perfect for us. So do what will be perfect for you not others, you will be less stressed and happier. 💜

I'm having 2 weddings. A main one in Vietnam with my fiancée's family and my parents and grandparents. Eventually, I'll have a second, very small one in the UK for the rest of my family and friends. A big benefit of the Vietnam wedding, lots of gifts of gold!
@akireodd5 ай бұрын
Both. You can do a cheap, intimate ceremony in Germany (even City Hall) and a large (affordable) one in Vietnam. Can they meet halfway for cheap? The Germany family may need to suck it up. Or... You guys can elope and just throw a party for family and friends later. Ultimately, it's about what the two of you want. I hope it works out.

As many other people have said it already, do the legal part in Germany, then throw two celebrations. One in Germany and other in Vietnam. It's way more common than you think. It doesn't even have to be with people from different countries. I've seen that with people from different religions even. The couple get married, then throw one celebration according to one religion and then another one according to the other religion. Also you get TWICE THE FUN!

I’m from Appalachia and I wish we had kept outside influences out of our weddings. We used to have them at our local church and everyone would bring potluck dishes. Even the cake was a stack cake, where each family would add a layer of cake. The more popular the bride and groom were, the taller the cake.

The white powder that she used to make tofu is actually called Glucono Delta Lactone or GDL. It is derived from fruit/vegetable glucose. Had she pour the soymilk INTO the GDL mixture and let it sit undisturbed instead of stirring it, her tofu would've been much smoother.
