I like to wear elbow sleeves at times. Not always, but say half the time. I dont have a clue if its age (39), maybe I screwed something up (doc says it looks fine) or from playing football in school (QB mainly). But my right elbow at times drives me crazy. I try to warm it up good and at times that helps. Other times, it makes it worse. I have even tried using them only on the warm up stuff. Thinking the sleeve will help get everything nice and ready. So, I do use them if its bugging me. Wrist straps are great for back. Seems to take the arms almost all the way out of the movements. But if your only barbell rowing 45lbs...you dont need them. Only when the muscles start to tire in the arms (happens) or your moving decent weight.
@bignikoli10 жыл бұрын
In some aspects yes but if you have a newbie benching their first ever max they should wear wraps so I think you are Wright and wrong and there is no wrong time to use equipment but it depends on how people are using the equipment and are they using it effectively

Wrist wraps...just have small weak wrist plus I injured them doing heavy reverse curls a long time ago...plus everyday shit from work. Compression sleeves for my legs...keeps the barbell from scraping up on shins too bad. Weight belt on rare occasions but usually the following day after doing heavy deadlifts. I wear it for work when I'm too snapped up to lift at work.

Good advice for the novice Nick. Have you tried those Reebok power lite shoes yet? Just bought a pair and love' em. Gym is in my home so everything I did when I started was barefoot and with no wearable equipment until maybe the second year when i bought the adipowers for squats. To me I don't feel they are a necessity, even though I'm 6,2 if I was traveling I would pack them. I'd just squat in flat shoes, they do keep me slightly more upright and involve the quads more but if you can't squat without them I'd suggest working on form. Again not talking to you just people who struggle in the squat.

You will have a weak core
@jasonbarner993110 жыл бұрын
***** You severely limit your core strength..hence the suggestion to use a belt once weights get heavier and you run the risk of actual injury. As an example, I won't put a belt on for deadlifts until I am repping 315+. I won't use a belt until 250+ on squat...etc. It's like benching 225 with a bro spot going on (your buddy holding the bar the entire time you bench, so he's basically curling it with you) and then you try and bench without that person doing it and you can't even hit a single rep because you weren't moving the weight yourself. The belt will be that sort of false positive if you rely on it too much.
@lemontube202710 жыл бұрын
Good info, thanks Nick.
@SCMAC1710 жыл бұрын
Nick Wright I avoided using a belt for squats and deads because I wanted to increase core strength and I was afraid wearing a belt would weaken my core, but eventually I had to start using one because the weight was getting pretty significant. But since using a belt I actually feel like my core has become much stronger. It makes sense too, a muscle that can push against something can contract harder than without any resistance. So I assume wearing a belt increases abdominal activation. Thoughts?

You say to go without equipment as long as possible. Makes sense for belts and wraps. What about squat shoes if you already have good mobility? I am pretty sure I want squat shoes, but I'm not sure when to get them.

@lowdose33810 жыл бұрын
Only thing I really wear to help me is football gloves. I got so used to wearing them in high school I couldn't take them off. I get terrible cuts from lifting. I've had my hands stitched up more time then I can count from lifting with no gloves. Plus they keep the publics germs off me! Just my 2 cents.

I agree with the knee wrap thing u said bt I squat 530 lbs and I can do it with and without knee wraps knee wraps for me personally are so I won't mess my knees up because I have bad knees bt me personally I don't believe that the knee wraps help with more weight bt that's just me and remember I do understand what you are saying. bt how do knee sleeves help I didn't quite understand that?

Nick, at 8:30 you fully outline the difference between knees and wraps, but in the beginning you say 2:35 "With sleeves, you'll never allow your knees to adapt." lol. Prehab and doing things to prolong a healthy joint are not even close to the same as letting something "toughen up"(like straps vs no straps to promote grip strength) There is no reason not to wear sleeves except effort and cost, or in my case, stupididididity.

When you overhead press you should be using a thumbless grip because it allows the weight to track over your head better.
@lukeinthehouse10 жыл бұрын
Joe Avignone + thumbless gives advantage of some external rotation which takes strain off wrists and aids mobility.
@aprod12210 жыл бұрын
for me at least the position is different..with bench i can keep a straight path from elbow to how my hands positioned...but OHP my wrists always seem to bend back (which for me isnt an issue as it doesnt hurt) but i can see why for nick who OHPs a lot more than me would find it strenuous..but thats just my take on it

Sleeve, the pain should eventually subside as the condition is an overuse injury that people grow out of as they age. But you may always have a bump over the avulsion site.
