Believe it or not, you weren't even wrong saying Yankovich. Let me explain: Yankovich is a pretty common surname in the countries of former Yugoslavia. In fact, the VAST majority of surnames there end with -vich, hence the origin. Now here's the tricky part: In Serbo/Croatian, the language mainly spoken in this territory, we use the letter Ć to denote the ch sound. And since English doesn't have that diacritic ( the little diagonal line above the C) it was changed to a C and therefore Yankovic. But you, my man, were not wrong at all. This just means that you've, possibly, heard several other surnames from this territory and remembered it as a pattern in your mind. :-D

Yup. I had a prof from Servia whose last name was Dordevic. Pronounced "GEORGE-a-vich." So yeah, in a lot of Slavic names a final C is pronounced as a CH.

@@thesisypheanjournal1271 It's most of the Slavic languages, except Polish that has an older spelling system, pretty much the same sounds - more s & z etc can be heard in Polish. Another case is of course those languages using the Russian style aka Cyrillic letters, not our Latin. But beware, there are many Turkic languages, Mongolic + many others which use those letters, though they are not Slavic at all - just influenced by Russian more or less. Most of these -ic´ending names are from the Balkans (between Hungary and Greece). They have a letter c + ´ on top: that means ch. It can happen anywhere in the word. Likewise they have a d + ´, spelled d + -, but it can be dj. That's said like the English J, except not like in Taj (Mahal) - 'Tadg' would be the one corresponding to J in the beginning of English words, just like garage ends differently to baggage. So that Dordevic would be better spelled like Djordjevic, which I've seen, and like said above, Serbian has there a d with an additional mark not available in the regular font we use here: it's like hyphen - across the vertical line. So clumsily like: D-ord-evic´. Put the lines etc. on the letters before them :)

@@AO968 actually, that is a modern, haphazard definition. The word is extremely specific. Decimated has the same root as decimal. To reduce by one-tenth or, a decimal, is to be decimated. Why would they be so specific as to use the root word for decimal if they meant "a large number" which is some Untold and very unspecific number. I am a linguist and I prefer that people use proper language and understand what they are saying. You can run to Oxford for today's common usage but, knowing what a word means makes you look a whole lot more intelligent.

Just a quick note a lot of people aren't aware but Weird Al actually is a very intelligent man he is a member of Mensa and he he has a very high IQ. The fact that he uses music to entertain but yet also educate in a weird way. Like Word Crimes he's telling you how about conjugating and proper grammar and punctuation that kind of thing. If you were to take this in haven't played in front of junior high students in an English class A couple times they retain the information a lot better than just the teacher talking at them and the reason of that is because when people talk at you you're not as vested in the information. When you're in a conversation when it was given take you retain more information because there's something very that you find interesting because you are commenting back to the person who talking to you. So if you are one of those people who don't do well in classes that are mostly lectures and just being spoken at and have problems with test because that's what class is that could be a very good reason why. Some people have hard time learning vocally and need to have it more visual and then there are some people who need to hear and see so they're Visual and audio Learners. That's my brother he has to have both otherwise he gets things wrong or confused because he learns better when he sees what you're doing as well as telling him at the same time. Me I could do it either way either visual, audio, or both at the same time. Just thought and leave that quick little note thank you

I'm probably guilty of some of these. Even though I've known English since I was barely able to read, there are still things that I have issues with. For example, 'who' vs 'whom' tripped me up for the longest time, and using commas correctly is *still* something I have issues with, as it seems to differ, depending on which source I ask. Still, that all pales compared to how people write nowadays. "You should NEVER write words using numbers, unless you're 7, or your name is Prince." I love that line. Al never was happy that Prince kept turning him down when he wanted to parody one of his songs. It's probably one of Al's more vicious jabs at a fellow artist. I would love to see more people react to "Dare To be Stupid". It's my favorite song by Weird Al, the music video is hilarious, yet it gets so little attention, presumably because it's not as popular as all his other songs.

Back in 2000 when the internet really started taking off, I would spend some time at my friend's house and use her internet (it was dial up back then). I used to complain to her that the spelling was horrible. I like that he brought up the misuse of the word “literally” in this song as that has long been a pet peeve of mine. One time I mentioned that someone couldn’t literally be drowning on evidence unless the evidence was a liquid that could enter the accused’s lungs! Then one smart guy chimed in and said “It’s called a figure of speech!” 😖 Oh good grief it hurts! So of course I couldn’t leave that be so I responded,- Oy vey! That was REALLY GOOD!! I had diagrams ALL THE TIME!!! NO ONE REMEMBERS THEM!!!! WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM? The prepositional phrases were below the main sentence and we took the noun at a diagonal on top and the verb, etc. I was pretty good with them and they disappeared one day forever!

I would like to play Devil's advocate a moment. What if I did care a little and I am warning someone that if they keep doing what they are doing I could care less. You could be threatening to stop caring at all. Thus "I could care less" I know you are attached to this piece of junk car in the driveway. Because I care I keep asking you to do something about it. I could care less about it and just get rid of the thing. It is just the way that most people use it is wrong. I could care less is not necessarily wrong if you are actually intending to convey that you could transition from caring about something to not caring at all. While, "I couldn't care less" implies that you already stopped caring entirely.

Some people are blessed with intelligence in multiple areas, some aren't. I'll be the first to admit, there are many grammar errors that bother me (loose or looser instead of lose or loser is probably top of that list). However, there are people who are artists, musicians, mathematicians, etc. that struggle with spelling and/or grammar. I love this song because I relate to it, but I don't judge anyone based on their spelling and grammar. I would prefer to not be judged on my singing, painting or ability to play an instrument, therefore, why would I judge another based on their grammar? (I can't lie, I used to, many years ago. As you get older you take yourself less seriously, hopefully, and with that comes an appreciate for different types of intelligence. Hopefully.)
