I have curly African hair, so I'm not sure how much relevancy my own experiences have to this, but that part about never sleeping in a bun/ponytail is absolutely true, at least for me. It puts prolonged stress on your hair and causes some strands to weaken and break down the middle where the band is.

the hair stuff kinda makes sense, you keep your hair in bun it pulls on the hair making it thinner over time whereas a loose braid wont pull on the hairs. two braids rather than one distributes the weight and stays cooler.

Well lemon actually does bleach skin, I use it a lot to take care of dark spots, but if you expose your skin to the sun it will stain where the juice has touched. Eggs are pure protein and great for your hair and scalp, as long as you wash it away after with water I don't think it's gross at all.

I do the eggs recipe and the lemon one and they work very well. -the egg recipe: you mix raw eggs with whatever nutritional oil you want. and then apply it to your hair after splitting it and brushing it and wrap it with a warm towel. *this mix must be done at least one hour before showering and the longest the better. **remember to wash your hair very well with shampoo. ***feel free to repeat this mask once a week and don't be afraid to be creative when it comes to ingredients. -the lemon recipe: you rub a little piece of lemon in your skin, wait enough time to let the lemon juice on your skin dry. and then immediately wash it with water and your usual skin cleaner. *this mix might sting your skin a bit and it's very normal since it's acid. **this mix is preferably applied at night, because the skin might be irritated in case of sun exposure afterward the application.

@AeriSoondingie

For the lemon I been doing it for years now, if your skin is sensitive like mine you should do it not so often since the acid can damage, it make the skin lighter or at least uniform. You can do it on the face too for burns, dark spots or scars, but of course being careful of avoid the eyes area and since vitamin C it's effecive for acne it helps a lot, also lemon is a natural antiseptic so keep skin clean, but again, it's acid so can bring dryness. Never leave it exposed to the sun because can burn the skin bad, but its okay to go in the sun if you are bleaching hair, it's more effective that way, just try not spend way to many time on the sun, that will dry out the hair or damage the scalp. After it dry on the skin or it been a while in the hair just normally wash it and apply moisturizing, like lotion for the face and oli for the hair. You can combine little lemon juice with baking soda to make a paste you can apply on the armpits or elbows and knees and it will bleach that as well. Also you can use the same paste to whitening teeth, just brush with the paste like it was toothpaste then use normal toothpaste and do in it once or twice a week it will work as well. I don't know what's with Lemon but it works for everything like magic, the thing I know works too but I have never try it is to use it as natural deodorant, I just can't imagine myself rubbing lemon in the morning Hahah.

The egg recipe is supposed to nourish your hair, results may vary depending on the hair type but generally it makes the hair more shiny and stronger. The lemon recipe is mainly used to unify the skin color and make blemishes disappear. It might leave the skin quite dry so it's preferably to use a skin moisturizer. Also, lemon juice can be very helpful is case of having oily hair: you mix a 0.5L to 0.25L of lemon juice (depending on hair length) with water, and then just apply it after your shampoo leave it for 5 minutes and rinse it with water.

Really interesting! About washing the hair, I'm not sure about once a month, but I wash my hair once a week. Truly, you don't need to wash your hair every day unless it gets dirty every day. Obviously if you sweat a lot on your head or do work that gets your hair dirty, you need to wash it, but it is true that most shampoos are drying and strip the hair of its natural oils. That causes them to be produced in greater amounts to compensate. For some people, washing with vinegar or other materials is better than any shampoo, but I myself shampoo and conduction once every week. My hair never really has a chance to get dirty and (having super long, thick hair) it saves me a lot of time during the week.

Peroxide of hydrogen is now known as hydrogen peroxide. It is for first aid to clean cuts, scrapes, and general debriding. For beauty, you can put some on a cotton swab and apply to pimples or dark spots. When mixed with lemon juice and baking soda, it makes a powerful paste/mask for scars and discoloration. Back in the 70s-80s, it was in a hair product in the US called Sun In. It’s a very strong hair bleach and will leave hair a weird fluorescent orange, so avoid eyebrows or hair if you use it. I imagine the pdf meant it to be used as a spot lightener and maybe to bleach facial or body hair, since bleaching hair blonde was considered cheap until the 1820s.

In terms of the hair stuff, I don't use shampoo and my hair is perfectly clean and doesn't smell at all. The only reason we need to wash our hair so much these days, is because shampoo strips the scalp of oils, so the body compensates and makes more. By not stripping the oils, the body realises that it doesn't need to make more. And bam, there you have it, don't need to wash your hair as often!

Egg makes your hair stiff (if no oil is added) and is really good for spiking hair into 'dos like a mohawk or liberty spikes. For the Edwardian tip, I'm assuming setting/styling would occur immediately after shampooing, which would allow a complicated hairdo to last a few days longer than normal. Still. Ew. That starts smelling in a few days & is especially horrible when you sweat. I'd imagine using eggs as a rinse, then washing it out with a mild shampoo would give a really good boost of protein to your hair though. I'll just stick to a beer rinse, thank you very much. OH! Also, if you use lemon juice for your skin, put on sunblock. It makes your skin more sensitive to sun. Lemon juice also mildly bleaches hair (ditto with the hydrogen peroxide). It's great for giving blondes/redheads highlights. It turns brunette hair brassy though. Oh geez, so many of these tips are my high school years all over again. LOL

Eggs can be used for hair treatments, but it needs to be rinsed out (and as I understand is usually mixed with avocado, coconut oil, etc). As far only washing your hair once a month, you CAN get away with that but it all depends on your hair type and your lifestyle, how much you sweat, etc.

It seems they practiced what is considered a "no-poo" or "sebum treatment" for the second one. It's something I have seen quite a lot these past years. People will not wash their hair with shampoo for a whole month, and, after that, it seems that the hair is softer and healthier, and also less oily as a whole. They will wash the hair only with water, or aromatized water (like with ginger in one video I saw) and brush it thouroughly multiple times a day, and all of them have said that their hair, after two weeks of the treatment, will not look greasy at all, but it will take those two weeks. Of course I'm not sure how well that will go for someone who has oily hair naturally, but I think it's a great thing for people who have very long and dry hair, and people with African type of hair, too. I have not tried this method and don't intend to, because I like to wash my hair, so yeah... The airing thing, I think, is something to help the scalp breathe? And the double braid thing does kind of make sense to me. Oh, and the thinning part of the point, I think, is because, when you make a habit of restraining the hair too tight, it begins to fall and thin out. The egg thing is something that has been done for millenia, honestly. An egg mask is great to nourish the hair and make it soft. I have only done it a few times in my life, but the result is always great for my hair type. You just need to wash out the eggs really well with warm water so that everything is gone. Ah yes, the lemon whitening thing. It's still a tip used in maghreban and arabic countries, because, as you may know, white skin is the beauty standard, there, contrary to the healthy tan trend that is commonplace in western countries. As many have said in the comments, it helps to reduce acne and unify the skin, and it lightens it. If you have sensitive or dry skin, though, I would recommend not using lemon, but tomato instead. I helps to keep the skin clear also, but I don't know if it whitens it or not. Hydrogen peroxide is oxygenated water, for your information ^^.

Nine months after my last reply, yes, egg can absolutely clean the hair beautifully. I now use raw egg yolk (but not the membrane, which is where most of the smell comes from), beaten with equal or greater amount of water, poured along sections of hair, directly onto the scalp, and massaged against the scalp; one section at a time; through very wet hair. rinse vigorously; in the shower if possible. Water temperature should be lukewarm to warm (hotter water will potentially cook the egg). Every hair and skin type is different, and may respond differently to this process. Do not do if you have open wounds on your scalp or hands (wear gloves). My personal hair type & texture responds so well to this process that when my hair dries, it looks and feels as if I had prepared it for styling, with layers of fancy hair products. Unless your hair is absolutely filthy, this method cleans it really well. The egg proteins lift the scalp secretions off. Don't use your nails to scrape or scratch. "Shampooing" this way too often may dry the hair.

Lemon juice does lighten the skin. However, it only does remove tan, and your skin will never be paler than your natural non-tanned color. It’s not only drying but also makes your skin more sensitive to uv light so must be used at night. I’m not quite sure, but I think it actually makes your skin cells renew faster more than actually bleach it. I could be wrong however. Anyway, works if you want to get rid of your tan quicker when falls comes, or reduced tan lines and weird tan patterns. Works better with honey and olive oil.

The egg can work, especially the yolk, it has a good balance of proteins, it also has cholesterol that nourishes the barrier function of the skin (there are creams that include cholesterol today), it has lecithin that acts as a surfactant (it is the responsible for the oil joining the lemon to make mayonnaise) can pick up things like dirt, dead skin or other solids due to its viscous nature, it may also have an acidic pH which is good for the hair. Maybe it is something that people realized by themselves or it was brought from another place, for example there is a video here about traditional embroidery with hair and there to prepare the hair to be embroidered, first it was washed with egg

Hair and heat before the blow dryer: Women used to sit in front of a fire and comb their hair every few minutes. This does have a drying effect but it can be overly drying and can cause heat damage. They did the same when radiators and furnace registers came into widespread use. Braiding vs. Twisting: You see a lot in period movies how ladies will have a bunch of cloth tied in their hair all over their heads. This is one of the ways that they'd make curls. Too much twisting apparently won't let the hair air out, if the document you're reading is to be understood.

obviously I found this video over a year too late but this topic is really interesting to me, so: I think the dry shampoo recipe was meant to dry out before use? I found a bunch of recipes from 1906-1911 and they're all powders, used the same way dry shampoo is still used, for the most part. Most of the liquids were fragrance, and cochineal is an insect ground(usually) for its bright red pigment(though they also made liquid versions, apparently), which was/is used in the making of cosmetics. So I imagine if the mixture dried, it would create a fragrant pink or light red powder. Some other fun dry shampoo recipes I found(from 1911): Salt. Just salt. There was also one that was just cornmeal. Though, Lush literally has a dry shampoo that's plain corn starch, so how far have we come, really? And the making sure not to sleep with your hair pulled tight is absolutely true. Just look at Jojo Siwa's hairline.

Nowadays it seems really weird that people used to wash their hair once a month but it is only so because the shampoos we use are made so that our scalps reject more oil and make us purchase more shampoos

Eggs + oil+ vinegar make a good recipe for a shampoo ( not just mayonnaise)! I did try this years ago. Looks a bit .... eggy at first, but it does wash your hair beautifully and helps it regenerate.

Egg yolks are actually amazing at cleaning the scalp. Especially if you have dandruff. Whenever my scalp gets dry and flaky or just needs better clarifying, I use egg yolks on it. Whites are harder to rinse out and stink worse, but probably help add protein to the hair. I've used egg whites whipped with sugar as a stiff mousse to style my curly hair, but it can be a lot of effort to do regularly.

An egg recepie from my family: - 2 egg yolks (egg whites can cook in your hair in warm water, it happened to me once, so you'd better apply them on your face as a mask) Opotional: - 1 tsp of olive/almond/whatever oil - 1 tsp of honey - 1 tsp of brandy (for dark hair) - 2-4 drops of rosemary essential oil It really works, but I'm very sensitive to the egg smell, so it's not for me, sadly :( and of course not for everyone.

There were actually hairdryers available starting in the late Victorian/early Edwardian period. The Dana Thomas house, built 1904, in Springfield, Ill., USA, has on display its original owner's hairdryer and curling iron, which are medieval looking things that were connected directly to the gas line.

I used to use peroxide to help with breakouts & it does temporarily lighten the skin (a few minutes to an hour) but they may have had a higher strength accessible then, lemon can be used for acne too but it is more irritating. Rinsing your hair with chamomile tea or green tea with lemon gives it subtle highlights that builds up with prolonged use so I assume it will do the same for skin; rinsing with black tea builds too & gives brunettes richer color. Lavender water would not just dry hair, but also keep it from smelling.

there are many people today who shampoo (!) their hair only once a month or less, but that doesn't mean they'd never rinse with water. I personally managed to only wash with rye flour for some half year, but recently my hair has become a little more oily and thus I wash once a week max. with a bar of soap, but I rinse it more often.

Beat 2 egg whites (alone or mixed with a flower water) & apply as a face mask to tighten skin. Plain honey masks are great for moisturizing, plumping, and pimples . Apple cider vinegar is useful for irritation, to calm pimples, to detox scalp, and mixed with water, a natural shine treatment after shampooing. To perk up hair color, add with chamomile tea bags (blonde or light hair,) beet or hibiscus powder or cranberry/carrot juice (red hair or dark hair,) or coffee (dark hair.) You can even make your own vintage lip balm or rogue with coconut oil and beeswax mixed with beet root powder or madder.

Borax is a strong alkaline powder so possibly it was a powdery mixture but I can’t think it did a long to achieve healthy hair. Yes eggs are great as a pre shampoo conditioner. You would otherwise have scrambled eggs in your hair if you went out in the heat, in fact if you sat in front of a fire. Re the lemon thing, my grandmother use to do this, she had skin like leather and she looked as if she needed ironing with the amounts of wrinkles she had. Hydrogen peroxide is bleach. It’s still made out of this. Hence why it fries your hair and turns it into a frizzy mess.

No they're right about not shampooing often. Rinse (why they use orange water for instance) , or a little good vinegar at the last minute and quick rinse. The hair needs a bone comb ( not plastic..) and comb through regularly and thoroughly. Rince out sweat but shampoo very rarely. I had very fine hair that couldn't grow too long. The moment I changed to two weeks shampoos, (used to do almost every day before, mild shampoos) but comb throughs and rinsing, it grew right down to my waist..

peroxide of Hydrogen is H2O2, its not stable and we now call it Hydrogen Peroxide. when it 'loses' the extra hydrogen atom it has a lightening or 'lift' effect on hair. Its currently used extensively with modern aniline derivative hair dye and decoloration (bleaching) It does a number on the hair cuticle, which for very fine hair can make it easier to manage in 'vintage' hair styles that require much more texture.

Okay so not as a substitute for shampoo but eggs in hair? yes! So Indian thing I guess, maybe (my mom told me, were Indian, it’s likely said by a lot of other groups too). But putting egg in your hair for a period of time and then washing it out is supposed to be good for your hair. It actually works, um but since my hair is more dry lately I’ve been using apple cider vinegar if anything (not a lot, and diluted in water) been a while since I’ve used an egg

The reason eggs are used in mayonaise is because egg yolk is a natural emulsifier, so it allows the water and the fat/oil in mayonaise to mix. It would have the same effect on the head I believe, allowing the oils to mix with water and be washed out. Soap is also an emulsifier.

well egg yolks have lecithin that works pretty much as soap molecules do, lecithin is an emulsifier which means it can, like, bond (?) together water and fats. the soap makes the same thing, that’s why it is so easy to wash oils off your hair using it. so no wonder you can wash your hair using eggs.
