Just so there is no confusion. Cory’s commentary on Run The Jewels ‘Oh My Darling’ beat being used, was not a knock at anyone, especially RM. He was just surprised that it was not widely recognized that this was the underpinning of RM’s ‘Joke’. And when reading commentary from other reactors and fans, no one acknowledged it. Yep

Thanks for doing your deep research. I wasn't aware of the beat being used was from The Jewels "Oh My Darling". It's the first time ever hearing of them. I think people should be openminded to not take offense of being corrected with facts. You help educate people who don't have deeper musical history to learn these facts in a non-critical manner. Overall, Joke is still one of my favorite RM raps which shows this other side of who he is. If you listen to his 1st mixtape (RM) verse his 2nd mixtape (Mono), you see his growth as an Artist, which makes you appreciate him even more! His lyricism and genius wordplay shines through in all his music, whether for BTS or his own solo work. I guess you can say that RM is the "front man" due to the fact that he is BTS leader. Especially in Western Markets, since he is the only member who is fluent in English, he does most of the speaking for the group, so he is front and center. You should check out RM Do You (which is the official MV doesn't have English Subtitles and it's hard to find the one which has it, I know I've seen one with it. If I find it I will attach the link). I personally don't like lyric videos. Also, you should check out Augst D's Augst D MV which hits even harder than Daechwita. Here is the link with Eng. Subtitle (cc). kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYrCdpyvnJmVnM0

Actually when this song dropped everybody was celebrating because he chose this beat. He doesn't profit off of this song, it's available in SoundCloud for free and not on any other streaming platform. When the actual sample a song they do contact the og and get things cleared for example Jhope chicken noodle soup (he paid more than 3 Million dollars and the song was released for free on soundcloud along with Spotify, no physicals). Agust D's Agust D is also the same case like joke. RM's first mixtape was all homages, he chose his favourite artists and their beats to flow. It was mentioned in articles regarding the same and even on Wikipedia if I'm not wrong. His second mixtape Mono on the other hand is like an album and hence it's available on Spotify completely. It's also a chill mixtape.

RM did 9 different flows here. All of RM's work are based on deep lyrics but not Joke. Joke is full of word play. This song was a slap to haters who criticized that he cnt rap fast or flow hard as "he had become an idol rapper" n said his rap was based on only lyricism n delivery. Also mocked him for persuing his career as BTS. Joke was his answers to those so called " rappers" who only spit words like 'bibidi babidi' (basically just saying any word that would go with the rhythm without having any actual meaning). Like that through Joke he showed that he can rap fast but good rap ain't just about speed. Just being fadt doesn't make it meaningful. It was a clap back to haters!

Joke is always amazing. The word play, underlying meanings and the flow and how it changes - Rm is such a lyrical genius. I haven’t watched the video yet, so I don’t know if you guys discussed this but Joke is supposed to be a kind of satire, mocking rappers who think rapping fast - yet without meaningful lyrics or flow - is cool and better. I think he got hated on from such rappers that he can’t rap fast, but in Joke RM not only proves that he can ( and that he’s better than them at it too (flow switches)) , while mocking those who think it’s cool or can only do just that, but that he can also rap fast with meaning and flow as well. He’s basically showing how he’s on a different level, incomparable mocking haters at the same time. The satire, the wordplay, the flow changes - Joke is absolutely amazing. Anytime I encounter a song or rap that has RMs touch, I’m more often than not amazed. You are correct BTS was built around Namjoon and he was the first member. Because he is the leader and fluent in several languages he is the main spokesperson, however he has no problem with any of the other members speaking up. As noted he is brilliant and that is important because he navigates interviewers who have their own agendas. Sometimes those agendas are to get a rise out of them… The thing about RM is he can shut people down (never rudely) and with his knowledge of multiple languages he can later slam you and you not even know what he is saying. He protects his team and as you get to know him you will see how he does this. The other members also fiercely protect RM back it is really a beautiful thing to see. What are are seeing is their duality. RM is laying them out here but when you hear Mono you will see the other side. Borahae 💜💜

Happy Birthday, Cory! I thought it was common knowledge for ARMYs (except maybe for baby ARMYs) that majority of RM’s 1st mixtape was sampled (that’s why it was only available on Soundcloud). In fact, when you deep dive into rookie and pre-debut BTS, they created a lot of similar music (one of the many examples are Kendrick Lamar’s “Swimming Pools” which they used for “School of Tears”, or even “Graduation Song” based on “Young Wild and Free” by Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa & Bruno Mars). They were encouraged by BH’s CEO Bang PD to do this to develop their writing skills even more. All these are available in Soundcloud and are properly credited. In fact, one such song was “Born Singer” (from J. Cole’s “Born Sinner”), which they are actually releasing as a single in their upcoming album “Proof” (with complete producing credits to J. Cole and co.) Their Soundcloud is actually a treasure trove. They have a lot of wonderful covers, and most importantly, they have original music there as well which they wrote and produced (especially their most recent ones). “Ddaeng”, produced by Suga & written by the rapline, is actually an original which you guys might enjoy. There is a lot of Korean context and wordplay there, so if you’re reacting to that one, I suggest you watch the Korean explains Ddaeng video too.

When he did his mixtape, RM (2015), during that time ARMY was aware. RM especially talked a lot about his first mixtape so most older ARMYs will know. If you had watched this MV on the Bangtan channel, in the description the original artist is listed. However, there are no lyrics for the video. So I hope you understand that most of these fan translation MV are not concerned about informing audiences about the music production. They are only focused on putting out translation videos. It’s really up to fans whether they want to dig deeper on who produced the beat, lyrics, etc. Just like you do Cory, oh and happy bday!

I believe the reason why RM's first mixtape is only available on soundcloud and not spotify IS the amount of sampling he used. Unlike his second mixtape Mono, which he wrote, produced and did everything, the first one is filled with him rapping over beats from artists he really liked, like J. Cole. This one in particular like you guys mentioned is sort of a joke like the title says, its a comeback to the people who said he wasn't a real rapper anymore because he left the underground scene and became an idol. Its just word play after word play, flow switches and shit talking. Its basically him saying "yeah you think im not good? Then check this out and see if you can do any better". RM was extremely respected in the underground rap scene in korea, but because he joined an idol group people started talking shit about him "betraying hip hop", so this was his comeback to that. If you want something similar to this coming from Suga, who received the same criticism RM received after joining BTS, i highly recommend his first solo song self titled Agust D, from his also self title first mixtape Agust D. Just look up Agust D - Agust D, really, theres no way of getting it wrong. You will get to see the first Agust D, the blonde one referenced in the Daechwita music video as the mad king and the reason why he was depicted as mad. Just like Joke, Agust D is filled with shit talking and crazy speed, a proof that he is an amazing rapper regardless of what people think of him as an idol and member of BTS. Unlike RM's RM, the entire Agust D mixtape is available on spotify except for this song because of the sampling used, the main one being This Is A Man's World. Really looking forward to your reaction to that.

I think it is great that you pointed on Run The Jewels ‘Oh My Darling’ beat being used as a knowledge rap fan yourselves, this really helps in educating ARMY about this artist. This gives me the opportunity to reciprocate and educate you a little bit more about ARMY, huge BTS's international fandom. This is what the comment section is for, for ARMY to inform people just getting into BTS as yourselves, and yourselves informing ARMY, "Oh I recognize this beat, this riff, this melody, etc, it's from this artist and this album, released this year... go check it out" We are here to exchange information to each other, so we all gain something from watching these videos. I am a veteran ARMY (since 2013), in my 40s, a metal and Hip Hop fan since the 80s, born in Venezuela, living in Japan, English is my third language. I don't find it strange or disappointing that most ARMY who got recently into BTS do not recognize or write comments about the beat in a mixtape solo song released in 2015. I definitely do not expect MOST new ARMY (from 2017-2021, when BTS exploded overseas) to know or care about something like this. Because of the following facts about who ARMY is. The majority are not living in western countries (just think about the number of Asian ARMY flooding the internet with their English comments). Most of ARMY are not knowledgeable about the American rap scene and even less if these rappers are not mainstream huge. Probably, most ARMY are only casual listeners who likes the albums, the songs, the whole BTS concept, but they don't feel the need to read credits or even search for the very well-done lyrics translations of the whole BTS discography composed of how many albums? 16? I lost count. They just want to enjoy the music and go to the concerts and check KZbinrs to share their journey with them and learn from the comments. This is ARMY too, and I think it's great as it is. We veteran ARMY, are very much thankful to KZbinrs as yourselves and to the tsunami of baby ARMY because thanks to you all, we can have BTS for years to come, we had BTS doing concerts in the Middle East, South America, Europe! (before corona). "Thank you, you nice keep going". We, old ARMY knew, of course, we were there when this was released, and we know RM's first mixtape is a homage to all his favorite artists' when he explained on his lives how he used his fav beats as a base for his rap and lyrics, something he did a lot when he was a teenager practicing rapping and songwriting in his bedroom. RM along with Jankie (BTS rap trainer) took this activity to the BTS trainees and the guys released many covers like these (other artists beats, original lyrics).

Even though their solo music is different, they may go harder, be more personal and express themselves more freely, I wouldn't say they are completely different musicians. BTS is my first introduction to rap, because I have such respect for them as a group I have ventured to listen to some of their rap. Not my thing but I admire and respect their message (s). I just appreciate that they speak to their haters through their music...and their climb to the top. Take that haters.

about the credits for the original owner of the beat, I think it is that the majority of ARMYs know it's not his beat because they always credit the original person in the information box of the videos when it comes to the use of samples so from the beggining we are aware easily if those are or not their own beats just checking the infromation box of the mv (they tell us also in the description in the souncloud audio) And also, if you check any other BTS or BigHitMusic groups you can have any kind of information from stylist, photographers, directors, dancers, producers and not just studios but also individually and I know this is not really common for the majority of companies but they have been doing this for a long time

Appreciate your honesty and podcast style presentation. It is quite unique. I think BTS has reached the rare place where they can explore different styles. Too often an artist get typecast into one style, e.g. angry, soulful, soothing etc. Fans keep wanting the same thing, but RM and BTS can explore so many genres and different sides of their personalities. The fans get a richer experience as a result.

He is considered the leader of BTS, so I think what you said about him being the “front guy” is an accurate description…..but I think that when they are on stage they share it AMAZINGLY WELL! No egos! Can’t wait for you to see SUGAs persona as AugstD or more of it! I think he has 2 mixtapes take a look at the first! Thanks for the reaction! Happy birthday Cory.. Just an FYI, yes it was not mentioned by ARMY but it was fully credited under the official MV, if you expand the description you can find that the music was credited to Run The Jewels 'Oh My Darling' I agree that it should've been mentioned by ARMY in their posts but they probably didn't think they need to since it's already credited and most of their explanation posts are lyrics focused.. regardless of that I really enjoyed your reaction and I always appreciate your genuine opinions in all your reaction videos!!

I have never thought in my life specially at this age of 42 that i will ever enjoy listening and even cry to a rap song. Not until i fell deep in BTS rabbit hole. Their first song that made me cry was “Born Singer”, a sample of J.Cole “Born Sinner”. RM’s part in that song just breaks my heart..

Another great reaction, guys. Thank you! And Happy Birthday, Cory 🥃. What's even more impressive is that RM's first mixtape is so different from his second mixtape, Mono - literally night and day. The maturity of his sound and lyricism in Mono is great. I would also recommend looking up the lyrics on Doolset, this translation was good but definitely some awkward translations in there, still.

Happy Birthday 💜 Please be understanding that this is from RM's first mixtape, our fandom is big and still expanding... Is hard to keep up with everything BTS has put out. We also are really diverse in nationalities and a lot of us didn't have the opportunity to know a lot about hip-hop and the great hip-hop artists. I'm educating myself now because after hearing so much BTS (and loving it) I figured that I should learn and appreciate the culture itself and its history too. I think that most ARMYs suggested this song to show a little bit of RM's aggressive style and skills. He changed a lot, Joke is far from being one of my favorites, but the context behind the mixtape and RM's early persona is more than enough to make it really fascinating. I wish I could comment something better but trying to make sense in english is kind of tiring.
@goreyfantod52132 жыл бұрын
19:05 RM is the leader & main spokesperson for BTS, in addition to being the first member. I'd even go so far as to say that BTS, in its initial conception, was formed around him. Added to that, RM had a top-tier ESL score as a student & for many years was the only BTS member fluent in English, so he did most of the speaking in all of their English-language interviews. Just as each member of ARMY has their own bias, different countries & regions have their own favourite members. In English-speaking countries, if you'd heard of BTS at all before 2020, you're most likely to have heard RM. That said, he isn't a, "front man," in the way that Western bands are often structured - RM is well-known for having a horizontal style of leadership and he actively works at practicing humility. So, yeah, I think it's fair to say he's the, "face," of BTS.

As impressive as hard-hitting RM is on Joke and throughout his first mixtape, I think it's really important to view it within the context of who he was then and who he is now. He changed his name from Rap Monster to RM in 2017 because he felt it no longer represented him or his music. In a 2018 interview, Liam McEwan asked BTS what advice they'd give to their 2013 selves, and RM said, "Hey Namjoon, don't name yourself rap monster. You're a human, you're not a monster, okay? You're a beautiful human. I love you, bro." RM has been very vocal over the years about his struggle to overcome hate, feeling at war with himself, his journey to loving himself better, so don't get so focused on the Namjoon of the past that you miss out on who grows to be. Following this up with a song from his Mono mixtape is a shock to the system, but it's incredible to have this tangible evidence of his growth.

ah, some people might overreact a bit to what you said about armys not mentioning the og RTJ sample but i do agree that typically not as many armys would know this these days. back when i joined it was a commonly known fact, but 2015 was so long ago now and many newer fans may not know! it's not a bad thing to say. always good to know stuff and say that people need to give credit where credit is due. :) but cory, many of us are aware of this fact, since all of rm's 1st mixtape uses other beats! and very happy birthday! 🎂🎉

Every time I listen to RM's older stuff I'm in two minds, on one hand I really like this kind of angry and in-your-face kind of rapping but on the other I cannot not think about the reasons and all the suffering behind it. He has struggled for YEARS because all of the underground rap scene and all of his rapper friends rejected, mocked and insulted him and BTS. Not only he had to face the hate that he received from others but he also started to doubt himself, he was really conflicted, he reached the point where he himself didn't know who he was, if he was a rapper, an idol, an artist... For this reason I really appreciate songs like "Idol", reading the lyrics you can see how much he has grown and how he learned to love himself thanks to his journey with BTS: "You can call me artist You can call me idol Or you can call me anything else I don’t care I’m proud I’m free" If you want to listen to more RM songs I would recommend "Do you" from the same mixtape of "Joke", and "Uhgood" from Mono. "Uhgood" is probably my favorite song from his solo project, it's completely different from "Joke", it's slow and more melodic, the lyrics are intimate and very vulnerable. If you happen to listen to this song I highly recommend you to check out the lyrics from "doolsetbangtan", the person who translated it is korean and wrote some notes to better explain some things that would have been lost in the translation.

@samly83922 жыл бұрын
Yes, RM's first mixtape is all music by a different artist but with his own lyrics. I think that most Armys are not really fans of rap, so most will not be aware of that. But if you look at official credits, the original artist is always credited. BTS did a lot of covers with their own lyrics when they first started out. These covers/samples are always released for free on Soundcloud, so BTS do not make money off it. RM is BTS's main lyricist. The CEO of Bighit, their record label, signed RM right away because of his talented rapping skills. His first mixtape was all about showing off is rapping skills and lyricism. I think rapping in Korean and being able to switch to English effortlessly and rhyming English words with Korean words and his lyrics still makes sense with his wordplay is what makes RM really special as a musician. You don't really have to be a rap fan to appreciate that type of talent. Anyways, it's good you mentioned that the beat wasn't RM's. I think some fans will be upset that you said 'disappointing' but I think most will understand that you were 'surprised' people didn't mention it wasn't an original beat. You can't please everyone on the internet and some fans are not native English speakers so sometimes words being used can be taken as offensive when it really isn't. You don't need to censor your opinions but also some commenters might not understand due to language barriers.

I knew that it was not his beat because it was his early age music(he was still learning producing that time) but honestly I really didn’t pay attention to the owner of it. funny thing about this song he ended it with "hit me" as an open invitation to those who kept critisizing him to respond to him with a song or anything really but it was complete silence afterwards hhh. this man already had a loyal fanbase when he was in the underground scene at 14 , grown men were scared to go against him in rap battles cuz they knew they would lose.

You might not see this comment since it’s been a few days, but I just wanted to give some context behind RM’s first mixtape which Joke is on. His first mixtape was created in his early early career in music. During that time, he was still pretty young and most of his rap was aggressive. His first mixtape does come with a very aggressive sound because of the kinda place he was in mentally. He has shared before that back then he felt like he had something to prove due to the hate and backlash he experienced from the people he use to consider his friends in the underground rap scene. Not only that, he was also battling depression and suicidal thoughts from it. So you can definitely feel the difference between his art then and now. It’s interesting to see the comparison between his old mixtape “RM” and the growth in his most recent one named “Mono.” Mono is softer, more melodic, and his rap style has a more relaxed sound to it. As you can tell, he is a pretty introspective person and it shows even more in Mono. Honestly I would recommend checking out both works. RM is literally a genius and Mono is a therapeutic masterpiece. It goes to show how he’s let go of the anger he harbored in “RM” and has just accepted himself for who he is.

I am all about giving credit where credit is due so I'm glad you said what you said before the video. I for one have never been a rap or hip hop fan so I did not and would not have had a clue. In all fairness, I would bet that probably 75 to 80% of army did not know this as well. Glad to have been educated on this thank you very much.
@Dani.Torres2 жыл бұрын
Yes, of course, depends on your musical background really. In my circle most ARMY were rap/hip hop fans before getting into BTS and because we read the descriptions of the songs on SoundCloud and their official Bangtang TV KZbin channel we can confirm from which artists the beats were taken. Writing and singing original lyrics over a very well-known rap beat is a very common activity by rappers to practice their craft. BTS has been doing this since pre-debut days, and they had uploaded these cover songs (with the credits) on their Soundcloud account where they can't monetize them. It is also common knowledge that BTS mixtapes started with borrowed beats from their most beloved artists. Agust D grew fast out of that because he knows how to produce and made original beats himself, so his mixtapes are in Spotify, iTunes, etc...
@addisonmcdorman79292 жыл бұрын
@@Dani.Torres thanks for the response. Of course I should not have gone out on a limb and tried to guesstimate a percentage specifically. Since of course I have no factual knowledge of the actual percentage. I know that a lot of armies have come from a rap and hip hop background as well as a metal background, you're certainly right about that. I was simply trying to make a point that with millions of fans around the world I would still guess that the majority of them did not come by way of rap and hip hop and, like myself, would have had no clue about rap and hip hop beats specifically. I love being educated thanks.
@Dani.Torres2 жыл бұрын
@@addisonmcdorman7929 I actually believe that your percentage might be right, 75% - 80%. I just wanted to add extra information about the minority of the rap fans that are also ARMY and explain a little bit that it is very common for rap artists to record their rap using other artists' very well-known beats, so we always check who use who in their songs. I thought that maybe this was new information for you and that could be interesting too.
