I did the extreme method of stripping the color from my hair and replacing with grey color, then letting my own grey grow in. It didn't damage my hair. Luckily, I was about 100% grey naturally, so there were no dark roots in the grow out. Yes, it's chemicalsl, but so was 40 years of hair dye. One last blast of chemicals wasn't going to hurt me that much. I am so glad I did it. I now have beautiful silver hair, and I got that way in one trip to the salon, and didn't have a year of grow out to deal with. For me, it was the perfect way.

I am 62 and I have been doing a lot of research regarding "going grey", at first I wanted to do it drastically by stripping my medium brunette hair and adding silver but that requires as much upkeep as being platinum blonde. My natural grey that is growing out is scattered all over the place on the top of my head. My hair is VERY long. I call it "COVID hair" I haven't had a haircut or any sort of process in nearly 4 years. One great thing I DO have is what I call a "skunk streak" and I saw a pixie cut with a long side part that would enhance it!!! I am done with hair dye and bleach. Thank you so very much from The Big Apple. Blessings...

I grew mine out a few years ago. My hair is curly, about chin length. I tell people it took about 9 months, just like having a baby. In the beginning I got the cover up stuff for my part. I kept getting my hair trimmed and wore a baseball cap when i could. It was worth it! I do think my hair grows fast because i needed to have it dyed every 3 weeks but of course i noticed the roots sooner. It was never ending! So glad I'm not having to do that any more.

I’m 52 and decided a long time ago to let it happen however it happens, while keeping my long hairstyle I have always kept through out my life. I’m not trying to impress anyone, I’m also not one to frequently go to a stylist, and only had my hair colored one time in my life because I also have curly and coarse hair and it was super damaging. I’m a brunette so the grey show’s pretty easily. It’s interesting how the process of growing grey has been taking a lot longer than I had ever expected. The other night I was out to dinner with family, and my 73 year old mother asked me what I had put into my hair to make it sparkly. I just hugged her and said: “52 years of life.” 😘

Your hair is gorgeous with the gray! I struggled for years dyeing mine. As a teen I woke to a pure white streak on top close to the front. My natural color is jet black, so you can imagine how that looked. First I parted my hair different ways to cover the streak, but it would always peek through. 30+ years of dyeing and 3 years ago I decided to accept what was going on and stopped dyeing and went cold turkey. Now I embrace my glitter. Oh and that white streak and I are besties now. Mine is a dark gray, with some white streaks. Bleaching was never an option because of the horror stories I heard. My hair was just below my waist when I decided to cut it to my shoulders. Now it's more manageable, healthier, softer & the shine is back. Looking back, I wish I had never dyed it; bc that did so much damage. New sub here. 👍😊

After trying all different methods-- bleach, short pixie, etc. Nothing seemed to work for me. I always ended up coloring it. With COVID-19 I finally bit the bullet and buzzed my hair about 1/8 of an inch. All the color is mine--but there are many different colors--it is fascinating to look at. The top is a beautiful silver, the sides are a combination of blonde and gray and the back is dark blonde. I leave the house to buy groceries once a week, but don't leave the house without a hat on. I am still very self-concious, but it seems to be growing quickly. My hair is very soft now and feels great--it is about 1/4 of an inch now after 2 weeks, and I think I can actually DO this!

I’m 58 and about 5 months ago I stopped colouring my hair. On top of the the expense to have it done was ridiculous, I can’t believe how freeing it is not to worry about it anymore. Where I was grey, the color would come out there first and the top was dark My hair is short and cut around my ears and since just getting my routine cut, my brown and grey hair has evened out and looks really nice. The funny thing is I was quite grey and noticed lately that my natural dark hair is making a come back, my mom even noticed it when I went to see her this weekend. If I’m going somewhere special and have to dress fancy, I just add fanciful brown foam after it’s washed and it just brightens it up but washes out the next time. I don’t miss colouring my hair at all, cold turkey is the way to go!❤

Every time it starts to grow out, I touch up my hairline. But I see your temples are gray as well, and it looks great! You've given me the courage to start letting it grow out. I have naturally dark hair as well, and have been wearing it auburn/red for about 15 years. You could ease into the grey locks through a process of hair changes, choosing a balayage ombre, with the low, high and baby lights mimicking the new greys, which all looks nice with a lob or longer shag, (with or without fringe/bangs.) Then your salon visit would be more like 4-6 months, as opposed to 4-6 weeks, for another addition to the already-lighter, brighter style. Maybe longer hair than the last time, but with more highlights than lowlights and more ombre than balayage the second time. Be ready with a good shampoo and conditioner and leave- in conditioner for the new texture of the greys, though. Grey hair is stubborn to take colour, but it loves to hold a style :) So good luck to all with your new looks, and great video!

Lucky for me I am retired, I am 70 year young, and because of an RX for thyroid issues my hair thinned quite a bit. I just figured it was time to stop all chemicals, and hairdryers etc. so I can at least have healthy hair. I am also just tired of dying it. I swore I would never have gray hair, but I am excited about it now. I believe it isn't the color of a person's hair that makes them look older, rather the hair style is what is the most important. A youthful style can go a long way.

Hi! I just found your KZbin. I have decided I'm done trying to keep my hair colored when I know that at any moment, the hypoallergenic color ive had to revert to after a bad reaction to reg color just about sent me to the hospital, could possibly attack my system and reap havoc. I used to work as a nail tech in a salon so looking good was important. The upkeep was my world. Nail, hair, makeup, nice clothes, It was overwhelming. Since 2021 I've moved to the country, and I'm retired at 62. I live 30 ft away from 2 of my young grandchildren who love me no matter what i look like. I've been thinking of going Grey for awhile. But after my hair dresser had to cancel me and has yet after a week not gotten back to me, I think it's time to call the coloring service quits. Plus, I'll save 100.00 a month! I have curly hair like you, and it gives me hope to know it's going to look just as cute as yours. One thing I did find many yrs ago is a spray in color that if you wanted to, you could use for some reverse coloring on your hair just for giggles. It washes out so no damage. CosmoProf. sells it. I thought I might do some reverse highlights on my grey once it starts to really show. I think it could help for that demarcation line. My husband on the other hand I think is worried. Lol

I decided when I shaved my hair off that I would not color my hair again. When my hair started to grow back it was the beautiful color my mama had, its more white on top, and a beautiful silver and gray on the sides and in the back. I keep in in a short pixie, and I too have naturally curly and wavy hair, so I just started to grow my top out and keep it in an asymmetrical pixie. I have gotten so many compliments on it and I absolutely love my natural, silver and white, gray hair. I do not miss coloring my hair at all. I hade a waist lenght black colored hair. when i decided to go grey I got a short bob and kept cutting it shorter and shorter until I was totaly grey. Since then I have kept my hair very short but I am trying to let it grow out a litle bit though.Your hair looks fantastic with the grey showing trought the brown. 💖💕

Wow....that does seem like a drastic style change. How did it feel to go from such long hair to.such short hair? I wouldn't feel like myself without my length :)

WELCOME TO MY CURLS Hi Renée! Honestly I still dont recognize myself with a such short hair. I love my salt and pepper grey hair but I do not like that it is so short. It feels good to admit that to you. I have been trying to grow out my hair but the fases I have to go trought are hopless. The hair looks awful thats why it is so difícult to get my hair long again. If you know you would not cope having short hair so dont cut it. Let your hair grow along with the new greys. It looks great on you anyway. Tank you so much for writing back on my coments. ❤️

Thank you for your channel! I am just starting to go grey and have been debating whether to color my hair. I also have natural curly hair and my grey hair is dryer and more course.I thought the color may help with that. I think I’m going to just work with what I have for now and keep watching you for inspiration!

I did the bleach and grey when I first tried to go grey. It looked so fake, it honestly looked like I had been doused with baby powder. It was matte, zero shine and the nasty shock made me cry. I left the salon and went to the pharmacy and found a bottle of Prell shampoo and washed my hair 5 times in one shower to get most of it out. I did that for the next three days to get it all out. I have since let nature take its course and a summer worth of pixie cuts and I’m ecstatic with what I’ve been blessed with. Whew!

Using henna in natural or lighter tones while growing it out blended the best when I tried going grey. I have since relapsed. Wasn’t quite ready for grey hair as much as I thought I was.

Thanks Renee, you are my new best friend and you don’t even know it! Hahaha! My transition has been so challenging, as it is for everyone, but your videos have helped so much! I am 4 months in, and was recently tempted to go to the hairdresser to try doing something to the remaining colored hair. I have now changed my mind and will tough it out. Thanks for the tips and motivation!

What about trying a grey lace front wig to help decide to go grey and then have fun with it while it grows out?

I am 6 months cold turkey and so far so good. As I had gradually gone lighter over a few years, on me, the natural growth looks like highlights. Fingers crossed it turns out good in the end. 🤞 In the meantime I'm quite liking the two-colour look. Mine seems to be a mix of grey and silver coming through. Yours looks great by the way.. 👌❤️

Thank you so much for your videos! They are so informative & encouraging! ! I’m only 3 months in and just now starting to really see my gray coming through. I asked My hair stylist to put a few highlights on top to help with demarcation however Im ready to stop with the highlights and go with a pixie and just let it grow out! I’m nervous but excited to see the end result!

I was salt and pepper at 32, and in the computer business. My colleagues who were much younger said I looked young but my hair was giving away my age! So I started putting three colors in with foils….a dark foil, a very light foil, and a honey blond one (my natural color had been mouse brown prior to the grey.) this was effective in blending out the grey, and I more or less became a blond. I continued that for about 15 years, and then decided I was confident enough to have grey hair without caring what anyone thought. So for about two years when I went to have the foils I asked for more and more of them to be the lightest color, and then I stopped the dark color after 9 months and then stopped the honey color, and for some months just did the light color. Then I just stopped foils altogether and I couldn’t believe my eyes to see with no obviousness, my hair was platinum colored all by itself! I was so lucky.

Today is Apr 28th & I watched your video about the Chantelle bras & the madewell tees. Well, I went to Dillard's & bought 2 of them. So far I love them & you are right about them not moving around. The only thing I do not like is the price; but I have such a hard time finding a bra that is comfortable & actually fits. Tees are so soft, think I will like these as well. Thank you for the tips. I live in Louisville, so I may visit the ice cream shop one day.

I’m over a year out now too & curly, I was coloring auburn prior to and went with the highlights method at the encouragement of my friend who is going grey with me. I’m a curly girl too so mine basically looks like yours just with blonde highlights on my ends. Looking forward to it being grown out and hoping to save $ on no more coloring.

My natural hair is dark brown which is changing to gray quickly, so what I'm doing is applying semi permanent hair color, which rinses out in two to three months. And when six months have passed the roots under the temp color will be about three Inches long. At that time I plan on using Color Oops which is a artificial color remover. I've used it in the past, so I'm expecting it will remove the color in my hair leaving about 4 inches of gray at the roots. Then I will get my hair cut to about 4 inches long all over. That's my plan Stan.

I am in the process of stripping the color with Colorfix from Salley's. I was hesitant because I was afraid of damage but left my hair soft. I had used Redken shampoo and conditioner afterwards but it felt sticky so I used my husband's Head and Shoulders shampoo and it felt so soft and conditioned. I am going to do a second round of Colororfix because I have so much build up of old permanent color.

Didn't know how gray I was, as I had been coloring it myself. Then I had another perm and surprise...almost all gray. Now my hair is silver and the salon tells me people pay for what I have.

Renee !! Your hair is so beautiful. The many Grey's are so pretty. And the curls. I grew up blond. My hair is not that dark when the grey & white grows out. I went back to coloring my hair. It's light red this time. Usually a darker red. My grandma dyed her hair much redder, I loved it. My aunt's dyed theirs blond. Mom kept hers dark. I think light black?? She's been gone 46 years. She colored it blond when I was 7 & she came to my grandma's & I just laughed. She went back to her regular color. I do not know why she went back. My sister dyes gets blond too. I have tried brown when I had surgery. Next time, maybe grey, with hilights. My hair is so thick. Oily. I put coconut oil last time I died my hair. A salon is too pricey for me. It was interesting you said you did not like going to a salon to have your hair done. That's easy to do. I have a fan blowing into the bathroom when I do my hair. Thanks again for your many hair & Fog Ideas. I love pets. Birds are a whole different world. So much fun to have. They are tiny, easy to please. With dogs it's best to have larger birds. Maybe one day. They chirp do beautifully.we can not put feeders out where I live, only humming bird feeders. Marcy

I have a wonderful stylist. When I told her I wanted to go gray, she suggested adding balayage highlights down the length of my hair, using my gray pattern. My hair is fine, long, with a slight wave. It is also very dark brown, which I had maintained since my mid-20’s. When she highlighted it, I’ll be honest that I freaked out. She started about mid-cheek around my face, because I had about 4 “ of natural silver coming in. I cried at my light hair. I didn’t recognize myself in the mirror. I called her and she had me come back in, and we toned it down a bit the next day. (Always tell your stylist if you aren’t happy!) She asked me to trust her, so I have. Every 12-14 weeks, I go in for a trim and tone. (My hair is long, and I just wear it one length so it doesn’t require a lot of styling upkeep). It’s now 2 1/2 years into the process, after that initial highlighting. I swear she’s a hair wizard. You can see the natural silver at the top of my head - which lightens the over all color- and my highlights are the exact pattern of my new growth. I have individual hairs that you can pick up that are silver at the root, and highlighted on the end, but the whole thing blends so beautifully. It’s been a wonderful process, and I highly recommend it.

You just described my case 100%...But every salon I've gone to tells me : " Simply impossible to bleach or highlight my ends" it will never be the color of my natural silvers, even if we tone it 😒. To be honest, they scared the poop out of me.🤣 so I guess I have no choice but to go total cold turkey.
