Freeze the cups (race), they'll go in nicely. Warm the cone a little and it'll go right on. JB Weld is outstanding. Well done, carry on.

When I worked in machine shop we had liquid nitrogen and would drop races in momentarily, they'd shrink and bearings would drop right into hub and then warm up and seat perfectly.

Yep. Cold is your friend with bearings.... 😃
@briancasey49172 ай бұрын
@@8squarefeet190 I also drove semi. When I had to do seals on the road with aluminum hubs, I used a propane torch to heat hubs to expand and drop bearings in as I couldn't carry anything that would get cold enough. That also works.

Hi Leg arms I was a truck mechanic if we had a wheel bearing go on one side we would always pull the other side of to check the bearings on that side as well also we would drop the diff oil and check for contamination I understand it’s a big job but it was always worth it. Love the show

Those are the biggest Timken boxes I've ever seen! I guess i shouldn't be surprised things were that expensive. I don't get seals being as expensive as they are. There's so little to them. Great job Scott and Nick!
@volvojohn90362 ай бұрын
You have to remember those seals are a very limited production. If they only produced 1,000 seals and most of them sit on the shelf for 50 years they are going to be expensive. If that seal fit all GM v-8 engine rear crankshafts, producing a million of them they would cost $20.00 retail. Most everything produced is economy of scale.

To help install new bearings and races I put the bearing assembly on a cookie sheet and put it the oven and heat it up to 250-300deg f. And I place the races in the freezer overnight and that usually helps out a bunch I’m sure there’s better ways but that’s about as cheap and simple as it gets
@skidoorulz49142 ай бұрын

use your welder and run a bead on the inside of old race that will shrink it and tap out easy then the frozen new race will go in easy also some time i know there busy and don't read all comments but this is a great time saver and he would not be fooling with JB weld

Thankfully you could find bearings/races and seals. Kudos to you for a successful repair. Scott, to make removing those bearing races, just run a weld bead down the center of them all the way around, let cool and they'll pop right out, that weld causes them to shrink when they cool.

Re preload we did axle bearings on a 45 HP CIH 495 and the book gave three methods, string around outer axle bolts with 8 lbs weight or 8 oz-inch torque wrench on the axle nut or crushing lead balls under washer on axle nut then torque to 150 ft-lbs, remove lead balls and measure crushed thickness then add appropriate shims to match lead ball crush and re-torque to 150 ft-lbs. We used the string method as I could not locate my inch-ounce torque wrench.

Lifting that wheel hub is why most farmers when they get long in the tooth walk all bent over and crooked😂
@Cougracer672 ай бұрын
Did you allow for the play in the threads of the adjusting nut? When you install the lock nut after setting the preload, the lock nut will push the adjusting nut in slightly (whatever the slop in the threads allows). If the nuts fit loosely on the threads and you have set the preload close to max, when you tighten the lock nut, you may end up with too much preload. While unlikely, it's possible to overload and fatigue the bearing rollers. Recheck preload after lock nut is tight.

Nice work Scott. The seal will 99/100 go in with not much force, compared to the inner race,'cos it's not solid like the race (It bends)! That is why it went in easily. Nothing complicated, just simple physics. The smaller the seal the harder it will become! Just from years of experience! Thanks for the video, from UK.
